Liverpool in pole position for Ramsay deal

Jurgen Klopp led Liverpool to what can only be described as one of their finest seasons in living memory, winning two trophies, and coming extremely close to winning the Champions League and Premier League too.

Hopes will be high ahead of next season, one in which the German manager will hope to end the Manchester City juggernaut and win a second league title, along with another tilt at continental glory.

In order to achieve this, his business in the transfer market will have to be extremely diligent, as it has been for the previous few years.

There might be a new signing soon, with Football Scotland stating that Liverpool are in pole position to sign Aberdeen’s teenage sensation Calvin Ramsay.

The Scottish club are set to make a decision this week regarding his future and a price tag of £4m has reportedly been set, which is nothing more than loose change in Klopp’s pocket.

Serie A side Bologna are keen on the defender, however, a move to Liverpool would be preferred.

Ramsay was one of the bright lights in Scottish football last season, having a breakthrough campaign and making 24 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, scoring once and providing four assists.

With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise that he was once dubbed an “unbelievable” player by sports journalist Ryan Taylor.

Although a right-back, his strengths lie in getting forward as much as possible and these are backed up by the fact that he delivered 154 crosses during last season whilst also having 0.71 shots on target per match.

If Klopp is looking for a right-back in a similar mould to Trent Alexander-Arnold, then Ramsay fits the bill. Although it would be uncertain to know just how much game time the young Scot would gain if he moved down south, his talent appears to have struck a chord with Klopp.

It could be an excellent opportunity for Ramsay, with the future of right-back Neco Williams and Joe Gomez, who has also operated in that role for Liverpool this season, uncertain, there might just be a glimmer of hope that he could be a success.

Rangers closing in on Steven Davis deal

A huge development has emerged on Rangers gem Steven Davis and his future at Ibrox heading into the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to the Scottish Daily Express, the Gers are closing in on an agreement to keep him in Glasgow for another season. His current deal expires ahead of the 2022/23 campaign and Ross Wilson has moved to secure his future with fresh terms.

The report claims that Premiership clubs Motherwell and St Mirren are both keen on signing the veteran gem and the Light Blues have fended them off to retain his services.

Supporters will be delighted

The Gers supporters will surely be delighted with this news as keeping hold of Davis will be a boost to Gio van Bronckhorst’s squad next season.

He is an experienced and valuable member of the team who can offer a great deal for the club on and off the pitch in 2022/23. The Northern Ireland international has played a whopping 344 games for Rangers in separate spells and played 306 matches down south in the Premier League.

This shows that he knows exactly what it takes to play at the top level and has a wealth of experience to impart to the other members of the squad.

He can, therefore, play a huge role off the pitch as he helps the younger players by giving them tips and keeping them grounded as they make their way into the first team. Davis can be an example to the likes of Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann with his professionalism, setting an example for them to strive to match.

On the pitch, he can also have an impact for van Bronckhorst. In the Premiership, he averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 6.96 across 18 appearances, making 1.9 tackles and interceptions per game and completing 88% of his attempted passes.

He also played seven times in the Europa League and was trusted to come on in the final of the competition against Frankfurt, before starting in the Scottish Cup final win over Hearts. This shows that the Dutch head coach believes that the 37-year-old still has the ability to perform in huge games for Rangers.

Supporters will, therefore, be buzzing with the news that he is set to sign a new contract and will be hoping that he can continue to be a reliable option for van Bronckhorst to call upon next season.

Manchester City want to sign Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Manchester City are ‘expected to pursue’ a deal for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, claims Daily Mail journalist Jack Gaughan.

The Lowdown: Fernandinho’s departure

After nine years at the Etihad, club captain Fernandinho is set to return to Brazil with a move back to Athletico Paranaense.

The 37-year-old said his goodbyes during Monday’s Premier League title parade after winning his 14th trophy with the Sky Blues.

The defensive midfielder amassed 383 appearances for City, scoring 26 goals and producing 33 assists during this time.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-developments-3/” title=”Man City latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Phillips the perfect target

With Fernandinho’s departure, City have set their sights on signing a new central midfielder.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Leeds star Kalvin Phillips tops the list of potential replacements. The 26-year-old has been identified as having the ‘perfect profile’ for the position.

Daily Mail journalist Jack Gaughan also shared the news to Twitter, claiming: “Man City expected to pursue deal for Kalvin Phillips over the coming weeks”.

The Verdict: Great signing

With previous reports linking West Ham ace Declan Rice with a move to the Etihad, the news that City are interested in his England midfield-partner hardly comes as a surprise.

With Fernandinho’s departure, it is necessary for director of football Txiki Begiristain to dip into the transfer market and sort a replacement, given the Brazilian’s importance to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Therefore, if City can convince Leeds to sell their ‘powerful’ midfielder for the right price, this will be a great signing for the Cityzens and possibly a cheaper one than Rice.

West Ham interested in Depay swoop

West Ham United are reportedly planning an audacious attempt to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, according to reports coming out of Spain.

What’s the word?

As per reports in Iberia (via Sports Witness), the Hammers are said to have made contact with the La Liga giants regarding a potential deal, with the Nou Camp outfit seemingly open to a sale this summer.

The report suggests that the Catalan side would see it as a ‘great deal’ were they able to cash in on the Dutchman in the upcoming window, with just a year remaining on the deal he signed to make the move from Lyon on a free transfer last summer.

Xavi and co would likely be set to make a tidy profit on the 28-year-old, with previous reports claiming that they could demand as much as £42m to move him on at the end of the season.

Huge coup

There’s no doubting that it has been a frustrating stint at times for the former Manchester United man in his current surroundings, although that’s not to take away from the excitement at his potential move to the London Stadium.

Despite at times coming in for criticism during his time with La Blaugrana, the £40.5m-rated gem still has an impressive record this season, having scored 12 goals and registered two assists in just 20 league starts, while he is also the club’s joint-top scorer in all competitions alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

That follows an outstanding stint in France in which he provided 76 goals and 55 assists in 178 games in all competitions,  having recovered from his disappointing spell at Old Trafford, while he is also currently the fourth-highest scorer for the Dutch national team with 39 goals in just 77 games.

Clearly a prolific attacking presence, Depay also offers the flexibility to play a number of positions, lining up as a centre-forward, a winger or even in a playmaking number ten role in recent seasons.

His versatility would no doubt prove invaluable to Hammers boss David Moyes, with the £158k-per-week “baller” – as he has been dubbed by BT Sport – offering undoubted additional quality to a side that has so often been far too reliant on Jarrod Bowen this season.

A “joy to watch”, according to Ronald Koeman, the one-time PSV Eindhoven ace has the talent to set the Premier League alight should he take the leap of faith and link up with the Irons, with the club able to offer him the talismanic status that he has been denied at present.

James Pearce provides big Liverpool update

Jurgen Klopp heavily rotated his Liverpool team against Southampton last night which led to worry about the fitness of key players ahead of the last day of the Premier League season and the Champions League final. However, a new update has emerged that will relieve supporters.

What’s the latest?

In a Q&A session on The Athletic website, Liverpool reporter James Pearce gave a promising response to a concerned supporter who was worried about Sadio Mane’s fitness as he did not appear in the matchday squad at St Mary’s on Tuesday evening.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Pearce gave a promising four-word response when asked if the Senegalese winger had picked up an injury: “Just rested I believe.”

Supporters will be delighted

Supporters will be delighted that Mane was just rested and hasn’t picked up an injury after Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Mo Salah have all had fitness worries since the FA Cup Final, especially when you consider how effective he has been for Liverpool over the last few months.

The 29-year-old has scored 22 goals and contributed five assists in 49 appearances this season, with three of his goals scored in important knock-out games in the Champions League. He’s also bagged eight Premier League goals since the turn of the year, proving highly effective and making a huge impact on Liverpool’s quadruple challenge.

With that being said, Klopp clearly made the right decision in resting the attacker in the victory over Southampton last night and has given him the opportunity to recover ahead of the final game of the season and the trip to Paris to face Real Madrid in the Champions League final, two games his positive influence and impact will be desperately needed in.

The German coach recently held high praise for Mane when he scored the winner against Aston Villa last week to keep Liverpool’s dream of a second Premier League alive.

“He’s a machine, I told him after the game,” Klopp claimed.

“Massive player. [His] physicality is brutal, this mix of technique, desire, and physicality in this moment when everybody has a few yards in the legs…you can see it with him to be honest. Top goal, just fantastic, a world-class player.”

It will be interesting to see whether Klopp involves the forward in his line-up on the last game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers or saves him for the Champions League final in Paris. Either way there is no doubt that unleashing Mane in the team over the next two games will lead to more outstanding performances.

Everton: Insider drops Richarlison & DCL claim

Everton have had a disappointing season so far with the side falling into a difficult relegation battle which has resulted in speculation surrounding the futures of many players, and now a new update has emerged on two key players in the team.

What’s the latest?

Transfer insider and journalist Dean Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that he believes both Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will leave the club this summer.

When asked about the likely future of the pair n an interview, Jones responded:

“I think it’s almost certain that they both go, to be honest with you, certainly if they get relegated. He (Calvert-Lewin) is a player that they know they could get £60 million to £70 million for.”

Lampard will be frustrated

The rumours that the Toffees boss could lose two of his most important goal threats next season will surely leave him frustrated especially if he manages to complete the great escape from relegation and stays in the Premier League.

Although the pair could surely generate a large amount of money for Everton if they were to secure moves to other clubs this summer, the hole they will leave in the attack would be hard work for Lampard to fill.

Richarlison has found his shooting boots in the latter stages of the season which has been crucial for the Toffees in their pursuit of safety, scoring four times in the last seven league appearances which has taken his current goal tally to nine goals and four assists in all competitions.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the other hand hasn’t had the opportunity to make the impact we have been accustomed to seeing at Goodison Park as he has been plagued with numerous injuries throughout the campaign.

The striker has only made 15 appearances, scoring three goals and contributing one assist, and has not scored a goal since August 2021. Since a long term quad injury and broken toe kept him out of the team until the turn of the year, he has failed in his recent performances to find his goal-scoring form.

With that being said, Lampard will just need to focus on securing Premier League football next season before concerning himself with transfer outgoings this summer, as the two varying outcomes could make a huge difference to how the club moves forward.

Ben Stokes finds his house still in order after enforced absence

Captain re-asserts his status in trademark day of bowling schemes

Potts hopes to prove himself after first overseas wicket

Ben Stokes has spent four Test matches in a row watching on like an anxious landlord from the England dressing-room. Much as he might want to trust his tenants to keep his house in order, he has found himself reminding them to let some air in through the bathroom window to stave off mould, and that the recycling bins go out on Monday nights, not Tuesday.Stokes did his best to empower his deputy Ollie Pope but his presence in the dressing-room ensured constant comparison. “Being stand-in captain is always harder than being captain,” Stokes, who lost his only Test deputising for Joe Root, acknowledged. “You’re only going to do it for a certain amount of games, and you’re still trying to push forward what the current captain is doing.”After nine weeks sidelined with a torn hamstring, Stokes made up for lost time on his comeback in Multan. Pakistan’s unprecedented decision to recycle the pitch from the first Test was the catalyst for a series of creative plans and field changes across 90 overs in the field for England, all of them carrying the captain’s distinctive fingerprints. The pitch played much better than expected, but has developed many more distinctive characteristics since England wrapped up their innings win on Friday. The cracks on a good length had widened and the grass on the rest of the square was much shorter. Conditions were much more conducive to reverse-swing, and balls regularly shot through lower than they should have done. This was never likely to be a surface conducive to slip catches, and the population of England’s slip cordon dropped from two to one before the end of Matthew Potts’ first over. By the start of the seventh, Stokes had spinners operating in tandem, a pattern he maintained until the 27th, when Potts returned with no slips but several catchers in front of the bat.Pakistan made clear when selecting a team featuring only one frontline quick – Aamer Jamal, who was their third seamer last week – that they expected a turning pitch. Even still, Leach’s success with the hard new ball spoke to Stokes’ reading of the game: not since the 19th century had an England spinner taken two wickets in the first 10 overs of a match.Matthew Potts struck shortly before tea•AFP/Getty ImagesThe double-spin returned for the first 17 overs of the afternoon session, but then 16 of the next 17 were bowled by the seamers. Stokes took a simple catch in an unorthodox short mid-off position to dismiss Saim Ayub off Potts’ bowling shortly before tea, and had the ball tailing late in his own five-over burst. The ball continued to reverse just enough after tea: Brydon Carse had Saud Shakeel caught behind with an 87mph/140kph effort ball, which shaped away to take the outside edge. He screamed in celebration, and pointed to assistant coach Paul Collingwood on the balcony after they had hatched a plan in the interval. For one brief period in the day, Stokes used seam and spin in tandem: between the 64th and 73rd overs, when the old ball was offering almost nothing. It was during that phase that he made his one major error of the day, failing to review a caught-behind decision when replays confirmed that Mohammad Rizwan had edged Potts behind on 6.”There was a decent noise going past the bat [which] the guys in front of the bat heard,” Potts said, “but the slip and keeper didn’t hear anything. We’ve got to err on the side of caution with that and trust the guys behind us, because they have the best view of it. I thought, potentially, it was a softish noise, which could have been bat on pad.”Potts developed his reverse-swing skills in India earlier this year, where he was the stand-out bowler on England Lions’ tour. Last month, he had a Kookaburra ball reversing when he took 9 for 68 in an innings for Durham. “The Lions chance was a great chance to explore, try different things, and find something that works,” he said. “It’s about implementing those ideas here.”Related

PCB issues Fakhar Zaman show-cause notice after post in support of Babar Azam

Ghulam's debut century carries Pakistan as England stay in touch

Reviews aside, Pope generally led England well in the field across his four Tests in interim charge. But he never quite shook off the sense of a Stokes impersonator, moving the pieces in the way he had been instructed rather than through his own instinct. His plans paid off on the fourth evening of the first Test, though that owed plenty to Pakistan’s mental exhaustion after 150 overs being run ragged in the field.By contrast, Stokes has developed an aura about him that means his team-mates would not think to second-guess his decision-making. “When you come up with a plan, you’ve got to have 100% buy-in with that plan,” Potts said. “For the bowlers that were given the task with a certain plan, there was 100% buy-in from everyone and we created a lot of chances throughout the day.”Perhaps Stokes’ best decision came shortly before the close. Shoaib Bashir struggled in the first Test, returning figures of 1 for 156, and was twice slog-swept for four by Rizwan in his first over of the final session. But Stokes empowered Bashir with the second new ball when it was only four overs old, and the extra bounce enabled him to beat centurion Kamran Ghulam in the flight to bowl him. There is no telling how this pitch will behave across the next four days on its second use, making it hard to draw conclusions from Pakistan’s overnight total. But it is clear that after spending four Tests watching on from afar, Stokes had taken back the keys and was thrilled to be back at home.

PCB springs surprise appointing Test captain Shan Masood in senior administrative role

He is the new Consultant for International Cricket and Player Affairs, a role that could soon become that of Director International Cricket

Danyal Rasool24-Oct-2025In an unprecedented move, the PCB has appointed its current Test captain Shan Masood as its Consultant for International Cricket and Player Affairs, a role that could soon become that of Director International Cricket – a senior administrative role in most cricket boards. The PCB declined to say whether this meant Masood was leaving his position as international cricketer or Test captain, or whether he would do both jobs concurrently. The PCB is currently actively recruiting for the position of Director International Cricket, with applications closing on November 2. ESPNcricinfo understands it is that vacancy Masood could eventually fill, while expected to perform that task on a caretaker basis in the interim. The previous Director International Cricket was Usman Wahla, appointed in May 2023. He was suspended from the role in September this year, though there has been no official confirmation from the PCB concerning his employment status since. It has been reported that Masood, and the players, were informed of his new role at a dinner reception hosted by the Prime Minister in honour of the visiting South African side. The PCB’s official statement is shrouded in uncertainty, saying nothing about Masood’s specific responsibilities, how long he will be in the job for, or how it affects his status as captain and player. The decision comes just a day after the conclusion of Pakistan’s Test series against South Africa, which Masood captained, and which the sides shared 1-1. Masood was the joint-highest scorer for Pakistan in the series. There’s no word from Masood in the statement the PCB put out on Friday. Masood has had the reins of the Test team for just over two years now, a period in which his position as captain has come under considerable scrutiny. He has won only one Test series – against England last winter – but before that he had become the first Pakistan captain to lose a Test series against Bangladesh. His tenure – ten losses and four wins – includes a drawn series at home against West Indies and whitewashes in Australia (3-0) and South Africa (2-0). Pakistan finished last in the last WTC cycle.Masood’s own batting performances as captain have actually shown an improvement on his overall career record. It hasn’t prevented his leadership from being subject to almost permanent uncertainty, however, and it was only shortly before the South Africa series that it became clear he would remain captain.Masood’s appointment as consultant is all but unprecedented, however, and surprising even by the standards of this PCB administration. Given the demands of what such an administrative role would ordinarily require, it can’t help but raise questions about his playing future. It could also potentially raise any number of conflicts of interest, with an active cricketer looking over the affairs of players who play under him or alongside him.Pakistan’s next Test assignments are two-match series against Bangladesh and West Indies next year, before a three-match tour of England in August 2026.

Everton line up January move for England international who Alan Shearer called "world class"

Everton are in the race to sign James Ward-Prowse from West Ham in January, with the midfielder “almost certain” to leave the London Stadium in the new year.

Ward-Prowse has enjoyed an impressive career, spending many years at Southampton and being renowned for being one of the best set-piece specialists in Premier League history.

Ward-Prowse has struggled to be a regular for West Ham this season however, and with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2027, the Hammers are set to listen to offers for him in January.

“There’s no way he’s getting back into the plans at West Ham. Nuno just doesn’t want him in the team; he is not open to the idea of this turning around,” reported Dean Jones earlier this month, claiming a move is “almost certain”.

“I don’t see any possibility that West Ham try to stop him from leaving. I think they will treat him with respect and allow him the chance to move.”

Everton are the team most strongly linked with the 11-cap England international, and now a new update has emerged regarding a possible move for the 31-year-old.

Everton ready to offer Ward-Prowse exit route

Speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown talked up Everton’s interest in Ward-Prowse due to his connection with David Moyes, confirming the Blues are “willing” to offer him a fresh start.

At 31, Ward-Prowse is now in the autumn of his career, so Everton wouldn’t be signing him as a long-term prospect with lots of sell-on value.

That said, he could be a shrewd signing in terms of his experience and enduring quality, not necessarily being a key starter but adding depth to the Blues’ squad at a relatively low cost given his contract situation.

Justin Fields Called Aaron Judge Home Run Right Before It Happened

As an NFL quarterback, it behooves Justin Fields to make an effort to call out things that are going to happen before they do. It's a useful skill for a signal-caller to have, particularly when reading opposing defenses.

Apparently, such a skill translates to Fields's everyday life.

The newest New York Jets QB took in a New York Yankees game on Wednesday night, a contest the Bronx Bombers won by a score of 4-3. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Fields turned into a prophet, as he called an Aaron Judge home run right before it happened.

"We're gonna see a bomb right here," Fields said moments before Judge belted a go-ahead, solo home run.

Here's video—which Fields inadvertently recorded sideways—of the moment.

Judge is currently one home run off the pace set by American League leader Tyler Soderstrom. Fields, meanwhile, will have his first chance to formally get onto the football field with his Jets teammates when New York holds its voluntary minicamp on April 21 and its OTAs on May 20.
