The IPL crisis has taken a new twist with Mumbai Police summoning a top Chennai Super Kings official, Gurunath Meiyappan, to its Crime Branch for questioning in connection with betting. He is expected to appear between 11 am and 5 pm on Friday after the police rejected his request for an extension until Monday.The news is embarrassing – and potentially damaging – for the IPL and its parent body the BCCI, given that Meiyappan is the son-in-law of BCCI president N Srinivasan, whose company India Cements owns the Super Kings franchise. Meiyappan’s exact designation is unclear at this point but his twitter handle says “team principal” and he has been a regular on the team dugout during matches and at the franchise table during the IPL auctions.Television visuals on Friday morning showed Meiyappan leaving Srinivasan’s house in Kodaikanal, a hill resort town where the BCCI chief has been spending the last few days.The summons was affixed to the door of Meiyappan’s Chennai residence and been served to, and accepted by, a manager at the Super Kings office.”We need to verify certain issues raised and claims made by Vindoo Dara Singh during his interrogation,” the joint commissioner of police Himanshu Roy said. “It may be necessary to confront Meiyappan with Vindoo to verify whether there is any truth in the latter’s claims. It is obvious that if Vindoo was merely socialising with him, we would not have summoned Meiyappan.”There was no official statement by the franchise.However, IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla did speak briefly on the issue. “The Mumbai and Delhi Police are competent authorities and let them finish the investigations before jumping to any conclusions,” he said, when asked whether Srinivasan should step down from the post of BCCI president accepting moral responsibility for the crisis. “How can you term anyone guilty before the investigations are completed? Let the police report be submitted and then we will be in a better position to talk further.”The development followed reports circulating in the media since Tuesday on the proximity of Virender “Vindoo” Dara Singh, who was arrested that day in Mumbai for links with bookies, to the Super Kings franchise. Those reports, which included pictures of Vindoo watching IPL matches in the company of Super Kings captain MS Dhoni’s wife, were not denied in the 48 hours since.Later in the evening Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s general manager (cricket development), met Mumbai Police’s joint commissioner Himanshu Roy. It was learnt that the meeting was primarily to seek Mumbai police’s cooperation in the BCCI’s internal investigation of the case against suspended cricketers. The Supreme Court had on Tuesday directed the BCCI to complete the internal inquiry within 15 days.The police crackdown on bookies continued in other parts of the country. In Kolkata, ten people, including one bookie, were arrested for being allegedly involved in cricket betting. “We have arrested 10 people, including a bookie last night. We are investigating thecase. They will be produced before a court today [Friday],” deputy commissioner Santosh Pandey told PTI.Initial investigations said they had bet on a match between Mumbai Indians and Super Kings.

O dia do Galvez também teve visita ao Allianz Parque, estádio do Palmeiras. O Verdão aindadoou material esportivo para o clube do Acre, com embarque para casa previsto para esta segunda-feira.

O Galvez avançou na primeira fase da Copinha no grupo do Palmeiras e com os mesmos seis pontos, ficando atrás só no saldo de gols. O time do Acre ainda eliminou a Desportiva, do Espírito Santo, na segunda fase, mas acabou caindo em reencontro com o Palmeiras, na terceira fase, perdendo por 3 a 0, nesse domingo. Foi quando foi revelado o problema financeiro para voltar para casa.

O Resende, por outro lado, buscava vencer para conseguir vivo na busca por vaga na semifinal.

CHANCES E CHANCES
A primeira tentativa de gol do Botafogo foi aos 14, quando Luiz Fernando obrigou o goleiro Ranule a fazer boa defesa. Mas o Resende, com um maior vigor físico, não ficava para trás – tanto que três minutos mais tarde, Gatito Fernández defendeu em dois tempos em chegada de Léo Silva. Maxwell ainda promoveu uma boa chegada ao time do interior.

E FOI COM PERIGO…
O Resende seguia indo para o ataque e teve a maior chance até então do jogo acertando o travessão, aos 35, com Arthur Faria aproveitando erro no início da jogada de Gabriel. Este panorama se manteve assim na sequência da partida até o momento do intervalo, quando Zé Ricardo teve um pouco de trabalho para corrigir as falhas então vistas em campo.

TUDO OU NADA
Depois de alterações táticas, o Botafogo foi para o tudo ou nada na etapa final. Quase abriu o placar aos 13 minutos, quando Luiz Fernando por pouco não fez um gol olímpico. No lance seguinte Gustavo Ferrareis também levou perigo e obrigou Ranule a trabalhar. Marcinho e Kieza ainda tiveram suas oportunidades.

RESENDE PREMIADO
Depois do tudo ou nada do Botafogo, o Resende acabou premiado pela boa atuação e predomínio no jogo, aproveitando falhas vistas na equipe alvinegra. Em contra-ataque aos 25 minutos, Maxwell aproveitou e mandou forte, fazendo o gol da vitória e da eliminação do Botafogo na Taça Guanabara. Após este balde de água fria, vaias dos quase três mil torcedores e indignação pela fase ruim, em uma esperança de breve melhora.

Alexei Kervezee has announced his retirement from international cricket for Netherlands in order to focus on his career with Worcestershire with a view to pushing his case for an England place.The Netherlands board has called Kervezee’s decision “extremely disappointing” and added there would be a chance for him to return in the future while the 23-year-old batsman, who had represented Netherlands in age-group tournaments since the age of 13, said it was a difficult call to make but believes he has to commit full-time to the county scene.”It’s a decision that I haven’t taken lightly and have thought long and hard about over the last few months but feel at this time in my career it is right for me in order to pursue my ultimate goal,” Kervezee said. “I want clarity in my mind as to what I’m working to and for, where I want to be and what I need to do to get there.”It’s always been an honour and pleasure representing Netherlands Cricket and something I never took lightly. I owe a great deal to Dutch cricket and playing for them is something that I will forever cherish, but at this point in my career I feel I need to focus on my future at Worcestershire.”Jeroen Smit, the Cricket Netherlands chairman of selectors, said: “This is an extremely disappointing day for Dutch Cricket to be losing a player of Alexei’s capabilities in a crucial World Cup Qualification year.”Peter Drinnen [the coach], Richard Cox [the CEO] and I have spent many hours in recent times attempting to persuade Alexei against this decision. Na cobrança dos pênaltis, no entanto, brilhou a estrela do goleiro Thiago Couto, que pegou dois pênaltis: no fim, 3 x 1 para o Tricolor. A taça ficou na cidade de São Paulo, que nesta sexta-feira também está em aniversário: a Terra da Garoa completou 465 anos de história.

Apoiado por mais de 37 mil torcedores, o São Paulo fez um jogo extremamente equilibrado com o Cruz-maltino. O Tricolor, que deu a entender que seria campeão no tempo normal, sofreu um duro golpe no fim do segundo tempo, mas teve força para garantir o título nos pênaltis. O São Paulo volta a levar a Copinha após títulos em 1993, 2000 e 2010. O Vasco, campeão em 1992, ficou com o seu segundo vice-campeonato, repetindo colocação de 1999.

O São Paulo chegou à decisão da Copinha tendo Antony e Gabriel Novaes como dois de seus principais destaques na competição. Contra o Vasco, a dupla se mostrou afiada e foi protagonista do primeiro gol tricolor na partida. O meia-atacante Antony, jogador do profissional emprestado para esta competição, avançou pela direita e cruzou na medida para Gabriel Novaes testar forte para o fundo da rede. Foi a sexta assistência do camisa 7 na Copinha, todas para Novaes, o artilheiro da competição com 10 gols.

Tempestade nada boa para o Vasco

O segundo tempo da final da Copinha foi disputado com muita chuva no Pacaembu. Caiu uma tempestade na capital paulista durante a tarde desta sexta. O clima atrapalhou o andamento da partida, sobretudo para a defesa do Vasco, que estava posicionada contra o vento, o que dificultou os lançamentos.

Desperdício cruz-maltino

Em desvantagem no marcador, o Vasco passou a ter uma postura mais agressiva no segundo tempo. O Cruz-maltino passou a utilizar seus pontas e, em 15 minutos, teve três excelentes oportunidades. Na sequência, Linnick, Caio Lopes e Tiago Reis desperdiçaram as chances criadas, que poderiam ter sido determinantes para um resultado diferente no Pacaembu.

Bota para correr

A confirmação do tetracampeonato do São Paulo veio na velocidade do meia-atacante Antony. No início do segundo tempo, Rodrigo Nestor recebeu a bola no meio de campo e achou um corredor na defesa do Vasco. O garoto colocou na medida para Antony disparar, dominar a bola, chamar o zagueiro para dançar e soltar o pé para o Tricolor fazer o segundo.

Esperança vascaína

O Vasco, que não teve uma atuação brilhante no primeiro tempo, foi superior no segundo. Depois de perder os três gols, o time do Rio de Janeiro chegou a ensaiar uma reação no Pacaembu. Em cobrança de falta, o camisa 10 Lucas Santos calibrou bem o pé para fazer um golaço. A bola ainda bateu no travessão antes de estufar a rede.

No fim, o Vasco foi para o tudo ou nada, ganhou o apoio de sua torcida que se fez ouvir no estádio, e conseguiu o empate nos minutos finais. Em uma desatenção da zaga tricolor, Tiago Reis recebeu completamente livre de marcação na pequena área, dominou no peito e empatou a partida.

Pênaltis

Com o empate no tempo normal, em 2 a 2, o clima era todo favorável ao Vasco nas cobranças de pênaltis. Os garotos de São Januário, no entanto, não contavam com a tarde inspirada do goleiro Thiago Couto, que defendeu as cobranças de Riquelme e Tiago Reis, e ainda contou com o erro de Gabriel Norões. Pelo lado tricolor, Tuta, Morato e Ed Carlos fizeram os gols que garantiu o tetra ao São Paulo.

Homenagem a Larissa

Ao longo da campanha do São Paulo na Copinha, o elenco tricolor se aproximou da pequena Larissa, de apenas seis anos. A torcedora, diagnosticada com um câncer no cérebro, costuma visitar os jogadores do time profissional no CT da Barra Funda e se tornou amiga também do time sub-20.

Em forma de homenagem, todos os jogadores do São Paulo entraram em campo com as cabeças raspadas, assim como Larissa que faz tratamento de quimioterapia. A garota, inclusive, entrou em campo de mãos dadas com o meia-atacante Antony, que já havia feito um gol para a pequena nesta Copinha.

Título volta para São Paulo

Derrotado para o Flamengo na decisão na Copinha de 2018, o Tricolor trouxe a taça de volta para o estado de São Paulo. Agora, os paulistas somam 30 títulos (Corinthians, com dez; Santos, com três; Ponte Preta, Nacional e Portuguesa, com dois cada; Juventus, Guarani, América, Paulista, Marília, Santo André, Roma Barueri, com um cada). Big PictureHad the first Test been decided on a points decision, there is little doubt that most judges would have awarded it to New Zealand. After bowling out England for 167 – their lowest first innings score since 2009 – the hosts replied with 460 to take a first innings lead of 293; their third highest against England in completed innings. While a flat pitch and some determined England batting prevented a repeat in the second innings, it was England who benefited most from the first day having been lost to rain.But the fact is that the match was drawn and, bearing in mind the history of England improving after a faltering start, New Zealand may come to reflect that they have missed their best opportunity to strike a telling blow. Worryingly for New Zealand, this pitch is expected to provide more assistance to the England seamers.It certainly proved that way in 2008. After New Zealand won the opening Test in Hamilton, England struck back at Wellington with Tim Ambrose recording his only Test century and claiming the man of the match award as England leveled the series. They subsequently went on to win it by prevailing in the final Test in Napier.It remains to be seen how much the effort in Dunedin took out of the New Zealand side. While they should have taken confidence from some aspects of their performance, the concern is that their three seamers bowled 114 overs between them in the second innings in their pursuit of victory. With so little time to recover between the games, Wellington will offer a stern test of their stamina. The ability of Steven Finn, who went into the Dunedin Test with few pretensions as a batsman, to resist the New Zealand bowlers for nearly five hours in the second innings might also prove sobering for the hosts.Still, any fears New Zealand had over the potency of England’s seam attack should have been eased by the Dunedin performance. England DDWWLIn the spotlightHad Martin Guptill been fit, it is highly likely that Hamish Rutherford would not have played in the first Test in Dunedin. Rutherford seized his chance with some style, though, and in scoring 171 set a new high for an opener on debut against England. Only Mathew Sinclair, who made 214 on debut against West Indies in 1999, has made a higher score on New Zealand Test debut. Rutherford’s excellent start has buoyed home hopes that a line-up containing Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson, Brendon McCullum and, one day, perhaps, Jesse Ryder, might have the potential to develop into the strongest batting unit in New Zealand’s Test history.Stuart Broad’s form has been the subject of much debate. But while the focus has tended to fall on his bowling – he claimed his first Test wickets since August in Dunedin – his batting has – arguably – fallen away more sharply. Since he last made a half-century – in January 2012 against Pakistan in the UAE – he has had 16 Test innings, passed 20 only four times with a highest score of 37 and averaged only 13.60. Perhaps more remarkably, in that time the average balls he has faced in a completed innings is just under 20. Such statistics do little to support the claim that he can be viewed as an allrounder and suggests that he may be batting too high at No.8.Team newsNew Zealand will be unchanged and England are likely to follow the same route. England have won four times and New Zealand only once, in 1978, when an England side captained by Geoff Boycott were bowled out for a paltry 64 chasing 137 for victory. Nick Compton and Alastair Cook are currently averaging 81 per opening partnership. The sample size is small – they have now played five Tests together – but only Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe – who averaged 87.81 in 38 innings – of regular England openers have a better record. New Zealand have won four of their last 33 Tests against England dating back to 1986. The last one of those game seven Test ago, at Hamilton in 2008, James Anderson needs eight wickets to become the fourth England bowler after Fred Trueman, Bob Willis and Ian Botham to take 300 in Tests. Former India allrounder Rusi Surti, 76, died this morning in Mumbai. The Queensland, Australia-based Surti had been put on life support in hospital after scans revealed he had suffered a massive stroke.Surti, often called the “poor man’s Garry Sobers”, played 26 Tests for India from 1960 to 1969 before settling in Australia. He represented Queensland 35 times in the Sheffield Shield and also played for Gujarat and Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy.A sound left-hand batsman, a left-arm bowler who could bowl either medium-pace or spin and an outstanding fielder, Surti rendered valuable service to Indian cricket almost throughout the 1960s. He scored 1263 Test runs at an average of 28.70 and a highest score of 99 while also taking 42 wickets at 46.71.Having debuted against Pakistan in Mumbai, Surti peaked on the tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1967-68. In the eight Tests he was the most successful run-getter with 688 runs at 45.50 and also picked up 22 wickets. In the fourth and final Test against New Zealand at Auckland, he was out for 99 which remained his highest Test score.Back home, Surti played two more Tests against New Zealand and one against Australia in 1969-70. By this time, he was representing Queensland in the Sheffield Shield and remained out of contention for India thereafter.His first-class career, which included six centuries, stretched from 1956 to 1972, with a debut for Gujarat against Bombay at the Brabourne Stadium and a final appearance for Queensland against South Australia at the Gabba.
