The one-year ban on Rana Naved-ul-Hasan was lifted on Saturday by the PCB, clearing the way for the fast bowler to be considered for national selection once again.Rana was one of seven players banned or fined earlier this year by the board following a disastrous tour to Australia; the other six have already had their punishments lifted or reduced on appeal – Mohammad Yousuf did not appeal but is back in the national fold – and this decision means that each one of the seven has now been pardoned. Rana and Younis Khan apart, the others have all played for Pakistan since.”Rana’s one-year ban has been lifted and his Rs 2 million fine has also been halved,” Taffazul Rizvi, the board’s legal advisor told ESPNcricinfo. The overturn came a day after Pakistan announced their Test squad for the South Africa series but Rana believes he still has a future with the national side. “Obviously this is a great relief for me as it’s been hanging over my career for a few months now,” Rana told ESPNcricinfo. “But I’m confident I can get back into the Pakistan side. I’m fit, I’m bowling well and I believe I can contribute.”Rana is scheduled to take part in the PCB’s Twenty20 domestic tournament for reigning champions Sialkot Stallions from Sunday. If he is not part of Pakistan’s winter plans, which include a tour to New Zealand, he will turn out for Tasmania in the Big Bash as he did last season.

Everton player ratings vs Burnley

Everton suffered a big blow in their hopes of avoiding relegation as they were beaten 3-2 away at Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Maxwel Cornet broke Toffee hearts with a late winner after Richarlison’s two penalties looked to have secured at least a point for the visitors, but some sloppy defending ensured that they went home with nothing.

Using statistical experts SofaScore, The Transfer Tavern have now analysed who the Goodison Park faithful’s three worst performers were on the night, with Frank Lampard surely looking at some changes to his XI ahead of the clash with Manchester United…

Ben Godfrey

Given a 6.1 overall rating, Godfrey ranked as the Merseyside club’s third-worst player, surely putting his place in doubt when Michael Keane returns from suspension this weekend.

The Englishman lost two duels, and of course made the vital error that led to Cornet’s winning goal.

He was also guilty of losing the ball 12 times, and struggled in particular with his passing, misplacing all seven of his long ball attempts, while he only managed to record a mere 54% overall pass accuracy.

Mason Holgate

Holgate ranked as their second-worst performer with a 6.0 rating.

Asked to play in the heart of the midfield by Lampard, the central defender lost out on six of his duels, and failed to record any tackles or key passes.

He was also inaccurate with eight of his long balls, recording just 37% accuracy with his passes, while he gave possession away 23 times, the second-most out of any of his teammates.

Jordan Pickford

After conceding three times, Pickford was given the lowest rating at a 5.9.

The goalkeeper struggled with his distribution throughout, misplacing 16 of his 26 long ball attempts, while he lost possession 16 times, hardly ideal from your man between the posts.

Pickford was successful with just 38% of his passes in total, meaning that collectively the three players averaged a mere 43% passing accuracy between them.

Botafogo supera o Macaé e obtém a primeira vitória no Carioca

Tharanga negotiates tricky chase

Against New Zealand, Upul Tharanga gave another demonstration of why he remains integral to Sri Lanka’s World Cup plans

In a top-order studded with some of the finest batsmen of today, Upul Tharanga tends to get overlooked. Against New Zealand, however, he gave another demonstration of why he remains integral to Sri Lanka’s World Cup plans. His batting doesn’t have either the flash of Tillakaratne Dilshan or the smooth adaptability of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, but his gutsy 70 on a challenging track was pivotal to the victory. It was a grab bag of an innings, which included inept wafts outside off, classy cover drives, his favourite cuts past point and an unintended tap to the off side as he was withdrawing his bat from a pull. The initial period was particularly patchy, a mix of getting beaten by a big margin outside off and some sparkling boundaries.Though 193 was a tiny target, batting under lights in Dambulla is never easy, as India had found out in the tournament’s opening match. “There was a bit of movement early on, there’s not a lot of swing but a bit of uneven bounce, and a bit of seam movement.” Sangakkara said. “Actually the slower bowlers like [Scott] Styris and the spinners were a bit harder to score off than the fast bowlers, the ball kept holding on the wicket, there were pieces coming off the wicket as well.”However, New Zealand’s hopes evaporated after Tharanga’s 84-run stand with Sangakkara, who after some starting trouble played some of the most eye-catching strokes of the match. “I thought Upul batted really well. I struggled to get to grips with the wicket early on,” Sangakkara said. “I was watching how Upul batted, and whenever he played a shot it was as if the wicket was absolutely flat, so I kept trying to watch him and see what he was doing and bat accordingly.”The partnership entertained the home fans, who came in decent numbers to create a lively atmosphere around the ground, unlike in the first match where hardly any spectators turned up. There were men on stilts twirling rings of fire, adding to the party mood, which wasn’t dampened even by the fall of Sangakkara and Jayawardene.Capitalising on a Styris drop at first slip, Tharanga scored his fourth half-century in seven innings, cleverly working the slower bowlers around to keep Sri Lanka on course for a bonus point. With 60 runs needed off six overs for the extra point, Sri Lanka opted for the batting Powerplay. Thilan Samaraweera showed off some innovative footwork, but Tharanga perished attempting a big hit.Angelo Mathews followed for a golden duck, and there was a bit of drama towards the end as Sri Lanka promoted Nuwan Kulasekara and Rangana Herath ahead of Chamara Kapugedera in an attempt to quickly score the runs needed for the bonus. Both didn’t succeed, and it was a cool Samaraweera who led them to a three-wicket victory, a final margin which hides the one-sidedness of the contest.Sangakkara said that it might have been a better tactic to send in the bowlers ahead of Mathews, and was disappointed to have missed the icing to the victory. “When you get an opportunity like this to get a bonus point, in Dambulla that might be a really important factor later on, unfortunately we weren’t good enough to get the bonus point.”He was happy though that the team had won chasing under lights in Dambulla. “It’s tough out there but it does our confidence a world of good.” For that, he’ll have to thank his opener. Tharanga spent plenty of time yo-yoing in and out of the side after his debut in 2005, but displaced Sanath Jayasuriya from the opening slot after last year’s Champions Trophy and has since kept out the 41-year-old, who still harbours ambitions of playing a sixth World Cup. More performances like this, and Jayasuriya could well be confined to the television studios when the global tournament comes around next year.

Pujara, Rahane power India A to important win

India A finally opened their account in the tri-series after two defeats with a comprehensive win against West Indies A at Grace Road

Cricinfo staff02-Jul-2010
ScorecardIndia A finally opened their account in the tri-series after two defeats with a comprehensive win against West Indies A at Grace Road. Cheteshwar Pujara led from the front yet again with an attacking century while Ajinkya Rahane smashed 90 to guide India to 340. The West Indians, save for Darren Bravo’s 83, couldn’t get enough big scores to mount that target and eventually fell 53 short in the high-scorer.The India openers, Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund, put them on the path to a big score with a stand of 95 in quick time. Dhawan hit ten boundaries as he raced to a half-century but he couldn’t convert his score as he fell in the 13th over to Andre Russell. Abhinav fell shortly after but from thereon, it was hard work for the West Indians as Rahane and Pujara added 151 for the third wicket. Gavin Tonge gave West Indies a long-awaited breakthrough when he bowled Rahane in the 41st over. Pujara reached his ton off just 83 balls and went on to score 114. All the West Indian seamers came in for punishment, with Russell and Lionel Baker taking two wickets apiece. The West Indies A top order also started briskly but lost three by the 13th over, with Dhawal Kulkarni accounting for two of them. Bravo resisted with an attacking knock and took charge of two half-century stands, adding 61 with Asad Fudadin and 71 with Russell. But India tightened their grip on the game when Bravo departed in the 38th over, bowled by Abhimanyu Mithun. Bravo’s 83 included eight fours and came off 108 balls. The lower order went on the attack but an Indian win was always inevitable.

Stuart McKinstry can save Leeds millions

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa could find his new Samuel Saiz and save the club millions in the transfer window at the same time.

The Yorkshire outfit have long been on the lookout for a new midfielder, particularly of an attacking nature, having seen two bids rejected for RB Salzburg sensation Brenden Aaronson during the January transfer window.

Before him, it was Conor Gallagher in the summer and one-time Bayern Munich man Michael Cuisance.

There has been a creative void in Bielsa’s engine room for several seasons, aside from veteran Pablo Hernandez, the Whites have been missing a player of Saiz’s ilk for quite some time.

Well, in academy gem Stuart McKinstry, the Argentine may well have the answer and considering the Yorkshiremen couldn’t even land Aaronson for £20m, the young midfielder could save them millions of pounds in upcoming windows.

The 19-year-old maestro has already made his senior bow, coming on as a substitute during a Carabao Cup clash with Fulham in September this year, where he scored the winning penalty to see the Whites into the next round.

For the U23s, McKinstry has delivered three assists from 13 appearances, largely playing in four different roles across the heart of the pitch, via Transfermarkt.

Not only has he been dubbed the ‘next big thing’ to come out of Elland Road by the very reliable Phil Hay of The Athletic but his youth teammates have likened him to Lionel Messi, which only bolsters his creative and attacking credentials.

“He’s a very confident ball carrier, he’s physically strong, good upper body strength, excellent feet, good at beating his man and creative. In his head, he probably feels he can play in other positions up front as well,” claimed the journalist.

Meanwhile, the Scot’s former academy director at Motherwell – Steven Hammell – once lauded him as a “fabulous young player” who “will do wonderful things and become a household name in the next three or four years” to the Lanarkshire Live Sport Podcast.

So, on the above evidence, Bielsa could well discover his next Saiz-like playmaker and one that will save the club so much money in the future. He’s certainly an exciting prospect who deserves a chance given the lack of options and the ever-mounting injury list.
