Somerset storm to another domestic final

The period in the late 70s and early 80s is generally referred to as the ‘glory days’ of Somerset cricket. But perhaps that theory will have to be reviewed

The period in the late 70s and early 80s is generally referred to as the ‘glory days’ of Somerset cricket. But perhaps that theory will have to be reviewed. For while the current Somerset side has yet to clinch the trophy their domestic dominance deserves, there has never been a period in the club’s history when the team has challenged so consistently across so many competitions. A good case could be made to suggest that this is the golden age of Somerset cricket.Despite the absence of several leading players – Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton are injured; Craig Kieswetter is on England duty – Somerset brushed aside a strong Durham side to reach their fifth successive domestic final. While they’ve lost the previous four (three Twenty20s – against Sussex in 2009, Hampshire in 2010 and Leicestershire in 2011 and one CB40 – against Warwickshire in 2010), the remarkable consistency they have shown in continually reaching finals is admirable. Remember, they missed out on the Championship title by the smallest possible margin last year, too. They are surely doing far more right than wrong. There’s no reason Somerset should not continue to thrive, either. In the short-term, Kieswetter will be released by England to play in the final and Trescothick has an outside chance of recovering from his ankle problem. In the longer-term, the fact that five of this side were aged 20 or under bodes extremely well for the future. Both on and off the pitch, Somerset are setting high standards in how to run a cricket club.Several of those young players made important contributions in this game. Chris Jones, 20 years old and making just his second List A appearance, ensured a bright start to their run-chase with a fluent innings that seemed to dis-spirit Durham and also fielded superbly. His run-out of Mark Stoneman – a direct hit from mid off – set the tone for the game.It is, however, the blend of youth and experience that make this Somerset side such a potent force. Alfonso Thomas, who may just be the best limited-overs seamer in the world at present, was typically frugal (conceding under four an over on this ground is exceptional), while Steve Kirby dismissed the dangerous Gordon Muchall with one that nipped back and then bowled too fast and too full for the tail to stage any revival. 28-year-old Arul Suppiah, with 57 from 44 balls, made sure of the result with an innings studded with sweetly timed strokes. It was Peter Trego who deservedly won the Man of the Match award. The 30-year-old allrounder bowled intelligently to his field, picking up the wickets of Phil Mustard and Paul Collingwood, before producing a calm and unbeaten innings of 40 to ensure his side did not squander their strong position.Durham, however, will reflect that they failed to do themselves justice in this game. Their wayward bowling at the start of the Somerset innings was particularly disappointing, but their batsmen also failed to adjust to a slower than expected pitch and, by attempting to set an unrealistic total, perished for a score that was probably at least 20 short of par. Durham’s fielding, carrying the bulky Ian Blackwell, also paled in comparison with Somerset’s.Only when Blackwell and Benkenstein were together did Durham threaten to set a completive total. The pair added 85 in 14 overs, with both men enjoying the short boundaries and threatening a revival. Blackwell mis-hit a slog-sweep to midwicket, however, and Benkenstein, called through for an unlikely second run by Scott Borthwick, was run-out after Lewis Gregory – another of those promising young Somerset players – produced a superb throw.Had Somerset taken all their chances, however – Blackwell could have been run-out before he scored and was dropped on one and Benkenstein was dropped by Murali Kartik at slip off Craig Meschede before he had scored – this would have been a rout.Perhaps the manner of victory left something to be desired. Heavy rain forced the players off with Somerset still requiring another 55 runs to win and forcing Duckworth-Lewis to decide the result. Some would have preferred the reserve day to be utilised. Few, however, would dispute that the best side had progressed.

'I knew a mis-hit would have gone for six'

Mushfiqur Rahim, who guided Bangladesh to victory against West Indies in the one-off Twenty20 with a penultimate-ball six, has said he is pleased that his tenure as captain is off to a positive start

Mushfiqur Rahim, who sealed Bangladesh’s victory over West Indies on Tuesday with a six over midwicket, said it was a calculated shot he played to finish the game.”I was targeting the smaller side of the ground, and I was confident that even a mis-hit could travel for six,” he said.During Bangladesh’s recent tour of Zimbabwe, Mushfiqur was in a similar position in the third ODI. Bangladesh needed eight to win off the last over with one wicket in hand, and Mushfiqur, batting on 99, hit a couple of the first ball and holed out off the next attempting a six. Here, he said, he was not worried about repeating the mistake.”In Harare, as we only had one wicket left, I knew that even if I took a single we would have lost the match; in other words it was all left up to me. Here, since we had three wickets left, I knew that even if I mis-hit the shot and we ran one or two there would still be a chance to win.”The match was Mushfiqur’s first as captain of Bangladesh and he was glad everything went to plan. “Everyone wants the first match [of their stint in charge] to be memorable, and I couldn’t have asked for more. We won the toss, it was the plan to bowl first because dew might have been a factor and our bowling is spin-reliant. We saved 10-12 runs in the field and made a concerted effort to restrict them as much as possible.”With Bangladesh 93 for 6 in the 16th over, chasing 133, West Indies appeared to have the edge, but Mushfiqur found an able partner in debutant Nasir Hossain. At that point, Mushfiqur said, he was looking to play out 20 overs. “I believed that if Nasir and I stayed till the last over, even if we needed 10 or 15 runs [in the 20th], we would win.”We got some runs in the second-last over [14 off Carlos Brathwaite], which was a bonus for us. In the last over, I had the confidence that if I got the ball in my zone then I could hit it for a four or six. Fortunately, that is what happened.”The Bangladesh bowlers did well to restrict West Indies, he said. “I think we bowled fantastically well to restrict West Indies to 132. It was not a difficult total [to chase]. Rubel [Hossain] got hit for two sixes, but these things can happen in the Powerplays. What I liked was how he responded to the responsibility placed on him and came back well.”Darren Sammy, West Indies’ captain, said his side had made too many errors. “We could have scored more runs, and we could have stopped more balls in the field,” Sammy said. “In the end we made more mistakes than they did.”We knew it was going to be an interesting series. They held their nerve better than we did. We never took them for granted.”

Brett Lee is expected to remain in Sydney during the Big Bash League and appears destined for the SCG-based Sydney Sixers. Lee is not interested in moving interstate during the tournament and is understood to be close to reaching an agreement with his former Test team-mate, Stuart Clark, who is general manager of the Sixers.Although the deal is not yet complete, the Sixers have nearly a fortnight to secure Lee, with the initial BBL contracting period set to end on July 22. Some teams have already named near-complete squads, but the Sixers need to lock in at least seven more players by the end of next week, and a further four before the tournament starts in December.Meanwhile, Kieron Pollard, the West Indies allrounder, will renew his association with South Australia after signing with the Adelaide Strikers. Pollard spent the past two summers playing Twenty20 for the Redbacks and he will be back in Adelaide later this year as the first of the Strikers’ overseas players.”I love the relaxed environment in Adelaide. I travel with my girlfriend and little boy and it’s important for me to bring them to a safe and welcoming place,” Pollard said. “Although it will be a bit different, I feel I’ll be able to relate strongly to the Strikers. We’ve been successful, and I’ve enjoyed my cricket when I’ve been in Adelaide. The management has gone out of their way for me and I want to continue to repay their faith in me.”The side missed out on the services of Shahid Afridi, who also had a prior association with South Australia but chose to sign with the Melbourne Renegades to play with his Pakistan team-mate Abdul Razzaq. Eight of the 16 possible overseas recruits have now been named for the BBL.James Hopes, the Queensland captain, has signed with the Brisbane Heat. “I’m really excited to have someone who has been a superstar for Queensland for many years in our side,” the Heat coach, Darren Lehmann, said. “Hopesy’s all-round capabilities on and off the ground are exceptional.”The Hobart Hurricanes have named New South Wales batsman Phil Jaques, Queensland seamer Ben Laughlin and Tasmania offspinner Jason Krejza as their final signings of the contract window. The Hurricanes have confirmed 17 of their 18 players and will wait until later in the year to add a final player to the list. The squads so far

Pascall Roberts dies at 73

Pascall Roberts, the former Trinidad bowler and selector, died on June 20 at the age of 73

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Jun-2011Pascall Roberts, the former Trinidad bowler and selector, died on June 20 at the age of 73. Roberts played 67 first-class matches and represented Paragon Cricket Club in the 1960s and 1970s, and after his retirement worked towards the development of Trinidad cricket. He was part of the West Indies squad that toured England in 1969, but never got his Test cap.Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) president Azim Bassarath said Roberts was an icon of T&T cricket. “Pascall Roberts contributed much to the development of the club and helped establish Trinidad and Tobago as a regional powerhouse. The cricket fraternity has lost one of its loyal servants.”Dinanath Ramnarine, president of the West Indies Players’ Association and a former T&T player, praised Roberts’ contributions as a national selector. “Roberts always remained involved in the game in Trinidad and Tobago and would always have good, sage advice for young men like myself who wanted to dedicate our lives to cricket the way he did.”Roberts started his career as a left-arm seam bowler and took 5 for 79 on his first-class debut, against Barbados. He later changed to left-arm spin, and formed a partnership with offspinner Jack Noreiga. He took 211 wickets in 67 first-class matches in a career spanning almost 20 years.Ronald Faria, who played alongside Roberts in the Paragon team, said he was a hard-working cricketer. “I played with Pascall at Paragon for close to 15 years and he could always be relied upon to give 100%,” Faria said. “He formed a deadly spin attack in tandem with Jack Noreiga and helped Paragon win Championship titles three years in a row.”
