Australia mull Michael Hussey selection

Ricky Ponting has nominated David Hussey and Steven Smith as the men in danger of being axed from Australia’s side to squeeze Michael Hussey in for Sunday’s match against Kenya. However, the Australians won’t be tempted to rest any of their best XI, with Ponting’s men desperate for action having been twiddling their thumbs during a two-week break since their last full game.Hussey has trained strongly since joining the squad in Bangalore as the replacement for Doug Bollinger, impressing the medical staff with how quickly he has recovered from surgery on his hamstring. The Australians will wait to see how Hussey handles Saturday’s training session before confirming him in the side, but Ponting said it would be a difficult call as to who would miss out.”It’s going to be a very tough decision, and one that up until a week ago we probably didn’t think we’d have to make,” Ponting said. “I’ve had a close look at [Mike] the last couple of days in training. He’s striking the ball really well. The physio forced him to do some quite intense running yesterday out on the ground. He got through that particularly well.”I think if you looked at two players that you’d have to single out who are in the same sort of position as Mike plays, it’s going to be unfortunately probably his brother or someone like Steven Smith. They’re the roles that Mike will come and play for us. We’ll have that sorted out by the morning.”The chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, was due to join the touring group on Saturday evening to replace David Boon as the selector on duty, and the Hussey decision is the only one likely to be required for this game. The backup players Callum Ferguson, Tim Paine and John Hastings will remain on the sidelines, but could come in to contention for Wednesday’s clash with Canada. The first-choice batsmen are in need of some valuable time in the middle, having not batted since the win over New Zealand in Nagpur on February 25. While sides like Sri Lanka and England have only one group match remaining, the Australians have three to play, and men like Ponting and Cameron White have spent hardly any time at the crease.”We won’t be resting,” Ponting said. “We’ve had enough rest over the last 16 days. We’ve had about one-third of a game in the last 16 days. We’ve trained really hard, we trained really well leading into the Sri Lanka game and this week since we’ve been here in Bangalore, we’ve trained particularly well again, so we’re really keen to get out there and play some cricket.”What it does do, it gives you a chance to prepare very well. We should be exceptionally well prepared for the next two games we’ve got coming up because we’ve had such a long break. It gives our players a chance to get over any little niggles they might have had from the previous games as well. We’re probably the only team in the tournament that will have a break that long. “The Australians have played Kenya twice before in World Cups, winning with relative ease on both occasions, and the Kenyan outfit of 2011 is notably weaker than their previous line-ups. But Ponting said there was no way his men would slip in to complacency against Kenya, whose only wins against Test nations since 2003 have come against Zimbabwe.”We won’t take any game lightly,” Ponting said. “We want to go out there and play the best cricket that we can. We know that we’ve got Kenya and Canada and then Pakistan just around the corner, then you’ve got quarter-finals and semi-finals. We haven’t played a great deal of cricket yet in the tournament, so it’s all about us getting our way right in the business end of the tournament, so that means that we go out tomorrow and play the best game of cricket that we possibly can.”

A ferocious 145 not out from captain Andrew Gale put Yorkshire firmly incontrol of their County Championship Division One clash with title-holdersNottinghamshire at Headingley. The visitors have been second-best on all fronts since winning the tosson the first morning, and had to fight hard to avoid a two-day defeat, eventually closing on175 for 6 – with 18 runs required to make Yorkshire bat again.Yorkshire began the second day on 213 for 5 with a lead of 70 but things didnot go entirely to plan early on. Gale completed a watchful half-century off 91balls but Adil Rashid added only a single to his overnight 39 before he playedround a ball from Samit Patel and was bowled.Richard Pyrah had his stumps hit by Luke Fletcher after one kept low but DavidWainwright gave valuable support to Gale as Notts began to feel the handicap ofbeing without Andre Adams, who did not take the field because of a groinstrain.Just as he was beginning to settle in, Wainwright drove a gentle return catchto Patel and in the following over Ryan Sidebottom was lbw to Paul Frankswithout scoring, leaving Yorkshire on 254 for 9.It looked as if Gale, on 67, would be denied his century, but he managed toplunder the bowling while last man Oliver Hannon-Dalby offered solid support.Every ball the number 11 kept out was loudly applauded by the home fans.Consecutive boundaries for Gale advanced him to 101 off 169 balls, with 13fours, at which stage Hannon-Dalby’s contribution to the 34-run stand was a meresingle. It was Gale’s first century since flogging an unbeaten 158 against thesame opponents at Trent Bridge towards the end of last season.Gale moved into hurricane mode as he planted consecutive balls from Fletcherhigh over mid-wicket for six and when lunch came at 334 for 9 he hadcontributed 76 from the previous 80 runs. That exceeded the previous best forYorkshire’s last wicket against Nottinghamshire at Headingley, 73 betweenWilfred Rhodes and Abe Waddington in 1920.Only two were added after the interval, however, before Hannon-Dalby was caughtat second slip by Adam Voges of Charlie Shreck, Gale receiving a standingovation for his unbeaten 145 from 205 balls with 15 fours and two sixes. It did not take long for Nottinghamshire’s top order to hit trouble again,Franks’ middle stump being struck so hard by Sidebottom that it had to bechanged. Mark Wagh’s off stump was flattened by Pyrah’s 10th delivery and in thenext over Patel bagged a pair when he was bowled by Sidebottom. At 38 for 3, a two-day finish looked on the cards but the visitors’ resolvewas stiffened by a 105-run stand between Alex Hales and Voges, during which theformer completed his second half-century of the match by driving Rashid overlong off for six.The fourth-wicket pair looked assured against both pace and spin but once againHales was to move into the 80s without reaching three figures. After making hisway to 83 off 112 balls, with 12 fours and a six, he stood no chance of keepingout a shooter from Pyrah which hit the base of his off-stump.Pyrah was once more fulfilling a vital role with the ball and he went on toremove Voges for 42 before being rested with figures of 15-8-19-3, Sidebottomreturning to deepen Nottinghamshire’s gloom by getting Alistair Brown caughtbehind.

Arbitragem

Arbitragem polêmica para os dois lados. Teve a bola na mão do Dourado. O Rever foi puxado dentro da área. E teve o lance capital do Geuvânio.

Waqar suggests Afridi will be World Cup captain

Waqar Younis hinted that Shahid Afridi would be named Pakistan’s captain for the World Cup following their 41 run victory over New Zealand at Seddon Park. Pakistan are the only team who have not named their captain for the tournament that starts in 17 days, and Afridi and Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan’s Test captain, were believed to be the frontrunners for the position. When asked whether he believed Afridi would retain the captaincy following a successful one day series in New Zealand, Waqar responded: “It’s a difficult question but I think so – let’s just put it that way.”Waqar had been issued a show cause notice by the PCB asking him to explain his remarks after he had claimed that it “would have been better” if the selectors had named a captain along with the final squad and that not doing so “would only lead to issues.”Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan also weighed in on the issue, backing Afridi as captain after he led the side to their first one-day series victory since 2008, claiming that Afridi “deserves to get the World Cup captaincy as a reward.” The victory in Hamilton saw Pakistan take a decisive 3-1 lead in the series with one match yet to played at Eden Park on Saturday. Both Afridi and Misbah have put in strong claims to the captaincy through a string of impressive performances in the series. Afridi has performed solidly with the ball, bowling tidy middle over spells and making crucial breakthroughs to keep New Zealand in check, while his swashbuckling 65 from 25 deliveries in Christchurch put the game out of reach of the opposition. Misbah meanwhile has notched up 203 runs in four innings at an average of 67.66 and has provided stability to the middle order. His perfectly paced 93 in Napier guided Pakistan to victory in a close run-chase and earned him the man-of-the-match award.Waqar praised his side for their allround performance in the victory in Hamilton as the batsmen put up a competitive total and the bowlers made regular breakthroughs to keep New Zealand under pressure during their chase. “It was a very professional approach by the Pakistanis in the entire game, not only just the batting and bowling. In the field we were pretty sharp, we held our catches, we broke the partnerships, so spot on in all departments.”The series against New Zealand is the eighth bi-lateral series and twelfth one-day trophy overall since their last series win and Waqar claimed it meant a lot to the team to finally get a win on the board. It was also Pakistan’s first one day series win in New Zealand since 1994. “It’s been a while. We’ve come very close to winning series and the Asia cup recently. We played good cricket but unfortunately we didn’t win anything and that’s why the boys were excited and they enjoyed it. We haven’t won anything for a long while in New Zealand in the one-dayers, so it’s definitely pleasing for everyone.”Nineteen year old opener Ahmed Shehzad played a scintillating innings at the top for the visitors, scoring 115 from 109 balls to set up the Pakistan innings, scoring his maiden one day hundred in the process. The innings was particularly impressive for its variety of strokeplay, as Shehzad unleashed a dazzling array of shots to entertain the Hamilton crowd. Twice Shehzad scooped James Franklin over the shoulder for four with fine leg in the circle and he also made room to crash a full Scott Styris delivery over the covers. His knock also included three majestic straight sixes off Hamish Bennett.”That’s where we’ve been struggling; our top order hasn’t been clicking,” Waqar said. “Ahmed Shehzad played an outstanding knock. He took his time and he made full use of a beautiful pitch to bat on. And then the middle order and late middle order chipped in and put up partnerships.”Waqar Younis claimed Pakistan would look to wrap up the series 4-1 on Saturday to further boost the side’s confidence ahead of the World Cup.”It’s important to keep the momentum and finish with a win so when it comes to the World Cup we are all nice and ready and pumped up.”

Tamim steers Bangladesh to series win

Tamim Iqbal’s explosive 95 blew away Zimbabwe on a slow Chittagong pitch on which the visitors had limped to 188 for 6, giving Bangladesh a six-wicket victory and a sixth-consecutive series win over Zimbabwe. On a track where the rest of the batsmen managed ten boundaries, Tamim clattered seven sixes and five fours after starting cautiously and surviving some anxious moments. Despite three of the top five batsmen contributing 13 runs between them, and Junaid Siddique taking 105 deliveries to reach a half-century, Tamim’s charge allowed Bangladesh to canter to victory as they took the series 3-1.He had curbed his natural attacking instincts after Imrul Kayes fell to the fourth delivery of the chase, before opening up with a pull over square leg off Chris Mpofu in the seventh over. Mpofu’s next over was an example of how the chase progressed – in sporadic spurts amid fortuitous let-offs. Tamim went for his favourite heave down the ground off the first delivery, but got an inside-edge that went just past the stumps for a boundary. The third delivery was lifted cleanly over long-off for six, before Mpofu made a mess of a straightforward chance as Tamim chipped a slower one in the air.Tamim continued to take his chances, treating the spinners with disdain and repeatedly targeting the area between deep midwicket and long-off. He also played-and-missed in between, highlighting the slow nature of the pitch though it had quickened up a touch compared to when Zimbabwe were batting. Flicks and drives just cleared the infield, but what stood out in Tamim’s effort was the urgency with which he approached the modest target, in stark contrast to Zimbabwe’s batsmen who had crawled at around two an over for more than half their innings.Siddique’s effort was far scratchier as he struggled to find the gaps. But Tamim’s briskness at the other end meant he could get away with working the ball around. Elton Chigumbura rotated his bowlers but it didn’t have any effect on Tamim, who reached his half-century in the 20th over off 61 balls. Zimbabwe didn’t help themselves as Tamim was left off once again, Tatenda Taibu failing to catch the bottom-edge off Ray Price. Tamim responded by moving from 50 to 95 in 34 deliveries, smashing five more sixes before falling while attempting yet another six, holing out to Graeme Cremer who took a diving catch running in from the deep midwicket boundary. By then, however, Bangladesh needed only 50 off 21 overs.Taibu and Craig Ervine had earlier put on Zimbabwe’s highest partnership of the series but their progress was painfully slow, before a late charge in the batting Powerplay took the visitors to 188 on a surface that didn’t turn much. Only nine boundaries were hit – six of them in the final six overs – partly because of the low and slow nature of the surface and the damp outfield, but largely due to the lack of intent Zimbabwe displayed. The first boundary came in the 24th over when Taibu stepped out and lifted NaeemIslam over mid-off. The batsmen showed more purpose after that and the duo had added 95 before Ervine fell, going for another reverse-sweep and getting a top edge that Mushfiqur Rahim gobbled up. Taibu, who made his first half-century of the series, continued to hustle between the wickets. From 137 for 4 after 44 overs, Zimbabwe took 42 off the batting Powerplay, using the lofted shot over the infield to good effect.Zimbabwe’s downward spiral had continued in the morning after Chigumbura opted to bat, and their confused state was typified by some mindless running. Bangladesh usually rely on their spinners to contain the runs but today their quicks, Mashrafe Mortaza and Shafiul Islam, did that job by being on target right from the start.Zimbabwe helped Bangladesh with repeated attempts at self-destruction, the first of which came as early as the first legitimate delivery of the match, also the first free-hit of the series. Brendan Taylor pushed a full swinging delivery to extra cover and rushed more than halfway down the pitch before he glanced at Hamilton Masakadza, who was rightly rooted at the non-striker’s end. Suhrawadi Shuvo had already swooped down on the ball, and waited for an instant before aiming at the striker’s stumps and scoring a direct hit.Mortaza deserved some rewards for his efforts, and soon trapped Masakadza and Dabengwa leg-before. Zimbabwe had slipped to 21 for 3, and the 11th over was already on. They never really recovered after that, and Tamim’s blistering knock in his first series after wrist surgery shut them out completely.
