Tamim steers Bangladesh to series win

Tamim Iqbal’s explosive 95 blew away Zimbabwe on a slow Chittagong pitch on which the visitors had limped to 188 for 6, giving Bangladesh a six-wicket victory and a sixth-consecutive series win over Zimbabwe. On a track where the rest of the batsmen managed ten boundaries, Tamim clattered seven sixes and five fours after starting cautiously and surviving some anxious moments. Despite three of the top five batsmen contributing 13 runs between them, and Junaid Siddique taking 105 deliveries to reach a half-century, Tamim’s charge allowed Bangladesh to canter to victory as they took the series 3-1.He had curbed his natural attacking instincts after Imrul Kayes fell to the fourth delivery of the chase, before opening up with a pull over square leg off Chris Mpofu in the seventh over. Mpofu’s next over was an example of how the chase progressed – in sporadic spurts amid fortuitous let-offs. Tamim went for his favourite heave down the ground off the first delivery, but got an inside-edge that went just past the stumps for a boundary. The third delivery was lifted cleanly over long-off for six, before Mpofu made a mess of a straightforward chance as Tamim chipped a slower one in the air.Tamim continued to take his chances, treating the spinners with disdain and repeatedly targeting the area between deep midwicket and long-off. He also played-and-missed in between, highlighting the slow nature of the pitch though it had quickened up a touch compared to when Zimbabwe were batting. Flicks and drives just cleared the infield, but what stood out in Tamim’s effort was the urgency with which he approached the modest target, in stark contrast to Zimbabwe’s batsmen who had crawled at around two an over for more than half their innings.Siddique’s effort was far scratchier as he struggled to find the gaps. But Tamim’s briskness at the other end meant he could get away with working the ball around. Elton Chigumbura rotated his bowlers but it didn’t have any effect on Tamim, who reached his half-century in the 20th over off 61 balls. Zimbabwe didn’t help themselves as Tamim was left off once again, Tatenda Taibu failing to catch the bottom-edge off Ray Price. Tamim responded by moving from 50 to 95 in 34 deliveries, smashing five more sixes before falling while attempting yet another six, holing out to Graeme Cremer who took a diving catch running in from the deep midwicket boundary. By then, however, Bangladesh needed only 50 off 21 overs.Taibu and Craig Ervine had earlier put on Zimbabwe’s highest partnership of the series but their progress was painfully slow, before a late charge in the batting Powerplay took the visitors to 188 on a surface that didn’t turn much. Only nine boundaries were hit – six of them in the final six overs – partly because of the low and slow nature of the surface and the damp outfield, but largely due to the lack of intent Zimbabwe displayed. The first boundary came in the 24th over when Taibu stepped out and lifted NaeemIslam over mid-off. The batsmen showed more purpose after that and the duo had added 95 before Ervine fell, going for another reverse-sweep and getting a top edge that Mushfiqur Rahim gobbled up. Taibu, who made his first half-century of the series, continued to hustle between the wickets. From 137 for 4 after 44 overs, Zimbabwe took 42 off the batting Powerplay, using the lofted shot over the infield to good effect.Zimbabwe’s downward spiral had continued in the morning after Chigumbura opted to bat, and their confused state was typified by some mindless running. Bangladesh usually rely on their spinners to contain the runs but today their quicks, Mashrafe Mortaza and Shafiul Islam, did that job by being on target right from the start.Zimbabwe helped Bangladesh with repeated attempts at self-destruction, the first of which came as early as the first legitimate delivery of the match, also the first free-hit of the series. Brendan Taylor pushed a full swinging delivery to extra cover and rushed more than halfway down the pitch before he glanced at Hamilton Masakadza, who was rightly rooted at the non-striker’s end. Suhrawadi Shuvo had already swooped down on the ball, and waited for an instant before aiming at the striker’s stumps and scoring a direct hit.Mortaza deserved some rewards for his efforts, and soon trapped Masakadza and Dabengwa leg-before. Zimbabwe had slipped to 21 for 3, and the 11th over was already on. They never really recovered after that, and Tamim’s blistering knock in his first series after wrist surgery shut them out completely.

Fast bowler Ruel Brathwaite has signed a two-year contract with Durham. Brathwaite, 25, had trialled with the Durham second XI earlier in 2010 before he was asked to join the main team for the final two weeks of the season.”I was delighted to be offered a contract with Durham after my initial spell with them,” Brathwaite said. “The boys really made me feel incredibly welcome while I was there and I can’t wait to join up with them in pre-season as we prepare for our 2011 campaign. I’m excited for the opportunity ahead and I’m looking forward to making my mark.”Brathwaite, 25, made his Durham debut in the club’s final County Championship match of the season against Somerset and had match-figures of 4 for 118. Hailing from Barbados, Brathwaite was Dulwich College’s first cricket scholar and has played first-class cricket for Loughborough University, Cambridge University and the MCC.”Ruel has a great attitude and real enthusiasm about the game which really fits well in our dressing room,” Geoff Cook, Durham’s head coach, said. “We’ll be working closely with him to finalise his status as English-qualified. We’re pleased that, despite offers from other counties, he decided to commit to Durham.”

Liverpool: Thiago outstanding vs Villarreal

Wednesday night saw Liverpool secure a comfortable 2-0 win in their first leg of this year’s Champions League semi-final against Villarreal.

Liverpool had a moment of luck for their first goal, which saw Jordan Henderson’s cross deflected by Villarreal left-back Pervis Estupinan – with goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli left with no chance in the 53rd minute of the game.

Jurgen Klopp’s side smelt blood and grabbed a second in the 55th minute of the game, courtesy of a well-worked goal that saw Mohamed Salah progress the ball and slide it through to Sadio Mane who brushed it past Rulli, with Villarreal thoroughly out-played.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Liverpool unsurprisingly dominated possession and picked away at Unai Emery’s side, though one player massively stood out besides goalscorer Mane and allowed them to tick over in midfield. That player was Thiago Alcantara.

The Spaniard registered the most touches with a whopping 119 and passed his way through Villarreal, with his class shining through in a game that saw him complete 99 passes from 103 attempts – leaving him with a mesmeric 96% pass accuracy.

Alcantara justified his 8.3 rating, courtesy of FotMob, and also played a key part defensively for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The 31-year-old registered five interceptions and issued ten recoveries in a performance that restricted The Yellow Submarine to just one off-target shot across the entire 90 minutes.

Liverpool were far too good. Mane may have grabbed the obvious plaudits for his impressive performance that saw him bag the second goal, and so too did Salah for his intricate assist for the second.

Though it was Thiago who acted as the metronome in the 2-0 win, oozing class and consistently penetrating the Villarreal block with his nine long balls that the Spaniard hit with, you guessed it, 100% accuracy.

It was a masterclass performance from Thiago, who will no doubt be a key figure for the Reds in the second leg.

PCB lifts ban on Naved-ul-Hasan

Rana Naved-ul-Hasan is relieved and hopes to play for Pakistan soon•AFP

The one-year ban on Rana Naved-ul-Hasan was lifted on Saturday by the PCB, clearing the way for the fast bowler to be considered for national selection once again.Rana was one of seven players banned or fined earlier this year by the board following a disastrous tour to Australia; the other six have already had their punishments lifted or reduced on appeal – Mohammad Yousuf did not appeal but is back in the national fold – and this decision means that each one of the seven has now been pardoned. Rana and Younis Khan apart, the others have all played for Pakistan since.”Rana’s one-year ban has been lifted and his Rs 2 million fine has also been halved,” Taffazul Rizvi, the board’s legal advisor told ESPNcricinfo. The overturn came a day after Pakistan announced their Test squad for the South Africa series but Rana believes he still has a future with the national side. “Obviously this is a great relief for me as it’s been hanging over my career for a few months now,” Rana told ESPNcricinfo. “But I’m confident I can get back into the Pakistan side. I’m fit, I’m bowling well and I believe I can contribute.”Rana is scheduled to take part in the PCB’s Twenty20 domestic tournament for reigning champions Sialkot Stallions from Sunday. If he is not part of Pakistan’s winter plans, which include a tour to New Zealand, he will turn out for Tasmania in the Big Bash as he did last season.

Adaptability will be key in CLT20 – Kumble

Anil Kumble has said the speed at which teams adapt to the pitches in South Africa will be crucial to their success in the Champions League Twenty20

Siddarth Ravindran04-Sep-2010

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Anil Kumble wouldn’t say how much longer he intends to play in the IPL•Indian Premier League

Anil Kumble, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain, has said the speed at which teams adapt to the pitches in South Africa will be crucial to their success in a short tournament like the Champions League Twenty20. He also said it was too late to bring in Kevin Pietersen, who has no international commitments during the Champions League after being dropped from England’s limited-overs squads. The tournament will be played from September 10 to September 26 in South Africa. In most countries except England, the cricketing season usually kicks off in September or October, which means many sides will be rusty.”It is the first tournament for a lot of teams,” Kumble said after an interaction with more than 50 Bangalore fans on the eve of the team’s departure from India. “In South Africa, it is the beginning of the season and it is the first game of the season for some of the players in RCB as well. The biggest challenge is how quickly you acclimatise to the conditions and the need to start well in the tournament.”Bangalore reached the finals of the IPL in 2009, when it was held in South Africa, and the team’s coach and several players come from that country, giving them an advantage over other overseas teams. “We can take some confidence going to South Africa having done well there in IPL 2. Our coach Ray Jennings also understands the South African conditions well. With Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn around, those conditions should suit our bowling as well.”The team’s batting is bolstered by heavy-hitters such as Ross Taylor and Cameron White, but they will miss the services of World Twenty20 Man of the Series Pietersen, who was their big-ticket signing last year. “It’s a bit too late,” Kumble said. “We had to announce our squad about a month ago, which we did.”Most IPL players signed three year contracts in 2008 that come to an end after the Champions League. It has been nearly two years since Kumble, who will turn 40 in October, announced his international retirement and he was unwilling to commit on how much longer he would continue to play the IPL.”Once you retire, you have to take it one step at a time,” he said. “So you don’t plan and say that I am going to play for the next three years. Hopefully I will be in good shape for the six games this month and we come back victorious. That will be a great motivation to get into the next year. To think of the next year is very premature.”A week ahead of the Champions League, the cricketing headlines are dominated by the spot-fixing controversy in London. Kumble was confident the right steps would be taken to avoid such episodes during the tournament in South Africa. “Every tournament, every international match that happens is under a perceived threat,” he said. “I don’t think we need to be worried about these things but we can’t close our eyes. ACSU is there to deal with it.”
