Liverpool linked with Mason Mount

Liverpool have been no strangers when it comes to signing players from fellow Premier League clubs over the years such as Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal and Diogo Jota from Wolves to name a few.

With this in mind, it seems as though the Merseyside club could potentially make a move to sign another Premier League star in the near future.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Daily Star, Chelsea and England midfielder Mason Mount has become frustrated at the west London club because of his treatment compared to other high-profile stars there.

The report also claims that Liverpool would be an exciting move for Mount who is apparently excited by the prospect of playing in front of fans at Anfield.

One source told the outlet: “He is torn because he loves the club (Chelsea) and the fans, but thinks it’s time for him to leave to step up his career. And where better to do that than Liverpool?”

Final Edwards masterclass

As a product of Chelsea’s youth academy, Mount, who has been described as a player that has the “full package” in terms of his overall ability and mindset by Thomas Tuchel, has made a total of 121 senior appearances for the club across all competitions in which he has managed to score 20 goals and provide 17 assists in the process.

This season has seen the 22-year-old, who is currently valued at £67.5m according to Transfermarkt, play in 14 games for Tuchel’s side across all competitions with three goals and two assists under his belt.

In the Premier League, Mount has shown just how much of a useful attacking threat he can be from midfield with an average of 1.8 shots per game, 1.2 key passes per game and an overall passing accuracy percentage of 88%.

A move to Liverpool could give Michael Edwards the opportunity to make his final transfer masterclass at the Merseyside club before leaving his role as their sporting director in the summer.

He’d be adding a fully-fledged Premier League star and England international that has experience of stepping up to the plate in big games, such as the previous Champions League final where he assisted Chelsea’s winning goal against Manchester City.

In addition to this, despite predominantly playing as an attacking midfielder, Mount has played in numerous other positions across the midfield in central and wide roles, showing how versatile he is and how he could fit into Jurgen Klopp’s squad alongside the many current Liverpool players in their squad that can play in different positions across the pitch.

This would certainly be a swoop that ends Edwards’ Liverpool tenure on a high.

Will Smith basks in proudest moment

Durham will celebrate their back-to-back Championship titles with a trip to Dublin after the season finishes, but first they want to complete their dominant campaign with two more victories

Durham will celebrate their back-to-back Championship titles with a trip to Dublin after the season finishes, but first they want to complete their dominant campaign with two more victories and put further daylight between them and the chasing pack. Will Smith, the captain, is taking more pleasure from this year’s triumph than Durham’s maiden four-day title last year having assumed the captaincy from Dale Benkenstein. The runs haven’t flowed for Smith in the same manner (522 runs at 27.47 so far in 2009 compared to 925 at 51.38 in 2008) but the demands of leading a title defence have left him proud of his achievement. Division One has been a one-horse race since Durham hit their straps after three early draws and they wrapped up the title with a thumping innings-and-52-run victory against Nottinghamshire.”On a personal level, I had a decent part to play as I scored a few runs last year but this year, while I haven’t scored the runs, I’ve put far more energy and emotion into it,” he told Cricinfo’s Switch Hit Cricket Show. “It means a hell of a lot more this year to captain the side to what, on the face of it, is a very convincing victory. It makes me immensely proud and if we win the next two matches it will be a very dominant table at the end of the season. It’s one of the proudest moments of my cricketing life and does surpass last year.”However, the hectic nature of the county calendar means they played a Pro40 match the next day – although most of the first team continued their celebrations on the balcony as a young side took the field – and on Monday were on a long coach journey to play Hampshire at The Rose Bowl. For Smith, one of the players who had to battle a heavy night to play on Sunday, it means the enormity of the achievement hasn’t sunk in.”I don’t think it has yet. We had the Pro40 game that didn’t really allow is to accept it and the evening we won it was mostly a drunken haze more than anything,” he said. “It will do in the next week or so. We have two games to play, and we are concentrating on those, but when they are done and dusted there will be a few more celebrations and a few more events to honour the occasion and then it will really hit home.”Even when Durham were occasionally put under pressure they managed to turn the tables. Against Worcestershire they found themselves 59 for 6 in the first innings, but won the came by five wickets, and conceded a 135-run lead against Yorkshire yet finished with a dominant draw.”It’s been a funny season in many ways,” Smith said. “We’ve had to dig in at stages so there have been sessions where we’ve been up against it. But someone will recognise that moment and drag us around, that’s really been the story of the season. There have been times when it’s been tough and we’ve had to fight tooth and nail. One of those to play a vital role at turning innings around has been Ian Blackwell and Smith was full of praise for the all-round skills he has brought to the team. “He contributed a lot of tough runs in difficult situations at the start of the season, and in combination with Phil Mustard and Liam Plunkett put on crucial runs. And later in the season he has come into his own with the ball.”When he was at Taunton he probably wasn’t renowned as an attacking spinner because it was a small ground with a flat pitch. With all due respect to every spinner we’ve had at Durham but he has really raised the bar. He’s a very clever bowler, with variations in pace, and that’s allowed him to take nearly 40 wickets which is a great record.”And there is Steve Harmison, who is yet to confirm his international future after not earning a central contract. He has set his sights of Simon Brown’s Durham wicket-taking record of 518 scalps and is currently one short of reaching 400. “He’s been fantastic this season. He’s an incredible guy and an incredible bowler,” Smith said. “Sometimes he’s misunderstood and it seems to me that when he plays for England or Durham all he does is put his heart and soul into it all.”That’s been obvious this season when he’s bowled for us, sometimes bits have been falling off and he’s still been charging in. The emotion he summons up when playing for Durham is incredible and as long as his body and mind are willing he’ll be one of the first names I’d love to have in the team.”Smith insists thoughts of making it a hat-trick of titles will wait while they celebrate this success, but if Harmison is around for a full season it’s going to be very hard to stop Durham.

PCB mulls splitting domestic one-dayers into four innings

The Pakistan Cricket Board has said it wants to trial one-day matches with two innings for each side during its domestic season

Cricinfo staff14-Sep-2009The Pakistan Cricket Board has said it wants to trial one-day matches with two innings for each side during its domestic season.Sultan Rana, chief of PCB’s domestic cricket department, who has also worked for the Asian Cricket Council as a development officer, has backed the idea which was brought into the spotlight earlier this month by Sachin Tendulkar.”If the International Cricket Council allows its members to experiment with this new format we will definitely be keen to try it out because our domestic structure is tailormade for this new concept,” Rana said. “I think it is going to happen soon. Because by splitting one-day games into four innings will basically allow the ICC and other countries to make one-day matches as interesting and popular as Twenty20 matches are now.”David Richardson, the ICC’s cricket manager, had said last week that the concept could breathe life into the 50-over format, which has been threatened by the rise of Twenty20s. The idea has its share of critics as well, including legendary allrounders Imran Khan and Kapil Dev, who feel the format of the one-dayer should not be tinkered with. The England board has already scrapped the domestic Friends Provident Trophy, the only 50-over domestic cricket tournament, in favour of an expanded Twenty20 competition along with a 40-over format. Cricket South Africa are also likely to join the bandwagon as it considers changes to its 45-over competition.Rana said the PCB will wait for the ICC’s green signal before experimenting with the 50-over format. “We will discuss this issue internally and be prepared for it when countries are allowed to try out the new format.,” he said. “One has to change with time and I think cricket also has to undergo slight changes with time.”

Brad Haddin has been advised surgery on his broken finger, which has ruled him out of Australia’s limited-overs series against Scotland and England and makes him a serious doubt for the Champions Trophy. Haddin was sent home from England after scans revealed significant damage to the left ring finger broken on the morning of the Edgbaston Test.Haddin visited a specialist upon his return to Sydney, and will undergo surgery on Thursday. “It’s been decided that the fracture of the ring finger of the left hand, sustained in the Test series in England, will be best dealt with by Brad having surgery,” said Trefor James, the Australian team doctor. “Brad will undergo corrective surgery in Sydney tomorrow.”He will therefore not be available for the limited over internationals in England. His fitness for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa and the ODI series in India in October and November will be reviewed at a later date.”

Aston Villa: Martinez alternative to Gerrard

Aston Villa are set to approach Rangers over a move for Steven Gerrard, with, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez a realistic alternative, according to The Telegraph.

The Lowdown: Martinez’s upcoming UK trip

Martinez, who has been in charge of The Red Devils since 2016, is under contract with the national side until 2022.

The 48-year-old is due in the UK next week with his Belgium side due to take on Wales in a World Cup qualifier.

Sources have suggested that Martinez is keen to return to the Premier League, with the boss, labelled as ‘outstanding’ by Alex McLeish in October, recently linked with the Newcastle United position before Eddie Howe’s appointment.

The Latest: Percy’s claim

John Percy shared a story on The Telegraph on Tuesday evening, suggesting Villa were set to launch an official move for Gerrard, who is keen to replace Dean Smith in the Midlands.

Within the story, they suggested that Martinez is thought to be a ‘realistic alternative’, should a move for Gerrard fall through.

The Verdict: A risky alternative?

Martinez has worked with some of the best players in the world during his time with Belgium, including the likes of three-time Premier League winner Kevin De Bruyne and Chelsea goal-machine Romelu Lukaku, however, he has failed to reach a major tournament final, taking them to a 2018 World Cup semi-final and a Euro 2020 quarter-final.

He does have plenty of Premier League experience under his belt, 265 games in fact, with his last position in England coming with Everton following time with Wigan Athletic.

However, he’s won just 81 of those, averaging just 1.21 points per game in England’s top division.

On that basis, Villa may well be better off looking at other alternatives to Gerrard instead of placing a boss who hasn’t exactly set the league alight during his previous stints in England on their list of contingency plans.

Robinson thrilled by de Vrij to Spurs latest

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Paul Robinson, regular pundit for Sky Sports, has been left thrilled by some transfer news out of Tottenham involving Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye de Vrij move…

The centre-back was a mainstay under new Spurs boss Antonio Conte at Inter Milan last season, starting 30 league matches and proving to be one of his undroppables.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Commonly realised as a key figure under the 52-year-old as Inter ended Juventus’ dominance over Serie A, it is little surprise to see de Vrij linked as one of the many big names from Italy.

While Fichajes claim that the Netherlands international is ‘closer and ‘closer’ to Tottenham, Football Insider recently dropped an equally promising update on Fabio Paratici’s hunt to sign him.

Indeed, they claim that the defender is open to joining Conte at Spurs and wants to know more information – telling friends he is ‘keen’ on the idea.

The Latest: Robinson reacts…

Reacting to this news out of Spurs, Robinson has been left thrilled, believing de Vrij is exactly what the Lilywhites need.

“He’s going to play a back three. If you sign a centre-half that’s used to playing in a back three, you’re winning already,” the former England international explained.

“De Vrij is somebody who worked with the manager last season and had success with him. He’s obviously somebody the manager likes and the manager wants.

“Centre-half is an area where Spurs need to strengthen. Romero, for me, is the only world-class centre-half that they’ve got. If they’re going to play three at the back, they need three of them.

“Dier, for me, is not a world-class centre-half. Romero needs players alongside him. De Vrij is world class and would be an absolutely perfect fit.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

Averaging a higher pass accuracy (93.8%) than any Spurs player last season, de Vrij’s composure and comfort on the ball is just one incentive to make a move and take advantage of his alleged interest.

His contract expires in 2023, potentially putting a little bit of pressure on Inter to sell him while they still can – with the Serie A giants having around three transfer windows in total to make a profit as the clock winds down.

He is currently valued at around £40 million according to reports, a pretty steep figure when compared factoring in the fact he is 29 and entering his twilight phase.

If Spurs can somehow negotiate that price tag down, de Vrij would be an immense signing for Conte and one who has already thrived under him.

Sheffield Wednesday predicted starting XI vs Sunderland

Following on from their 2-2 draw against Cheltenham Town at the weekend, Sheffield Wednesday are set to take on Sunderland this evening in their latest League One fixture.

Speaking ahead of the match against the Black Cats, who are currently three places and six points above Wednesday in the league table, Owls boss Darren Moore revealed that defender Dominic Iorfa has a 50/50 chance of being fit to face Sunderland after picking up an ankle injury prior to the Cheltenham match.

With this in mind, here’s how we feel Wednesday could line up this evening with two changes expected.

In goal, we think Moore will stick with Bailey Peacock-Farrell after playing in their previous three league games and managing to make four saves in the game against Cheltenham.

For the defence, assuming Iorfa isn’t fully fit enough to start against Sunderland, we can see the manager sticking with the same back three that started last time out as Liam Palmer, Jack Hunt and Chey Dunkley, who grabbed himself a goal at the weekend, all feature.

For the wing-back positions, on the right-hand side, with Olamide Shodipo impressing against Cheltenham by completing three out of the four dribbles he attempted and ultimately earned himself a decent overall match rating of 7/10 according to SofaScore, we think Moore should stick with him in that position on this occasion with Marvin Johnson keeping his place on the left.

In midfield, we anticipate the boss making changes with Lewis Wing coming in for Oluwafisayo Dele-Bashiri to partner Barry Bannan in midfield.

That’s followed by Saido Berahino replacing 22-year-old Dennis Adeniran to play up close to the striker duo of Callum Paterson and Lee Gregory to see if Wednesday can replicate a similar scoreline that Rotherham United managed to secure against Lee Johnson’s side at the weekend then Sunderland were beaten 5-1.

Whether Moore goes with this exact starting XI that we have suggested or not, this is a big game for the Owls. If they manage to defeat the Black Cats and keep their unbeaten streak going, it would put them firmly in the race for promotion back to the Championship.
