Jaffar and Shoaib Mohammad retained as selectors

Saleem Jaffar and Shoaib Mohammad have been retained as Pakistan’s selectors in the new committee to be headed by former legspinner Abdul Qadir

Cricinfo staff21-Nov-2008Saleem Jaffar and Shoaib Mohammad have been retained as Pakistan’s selectors in the new committee to be headed by former legspinner Abdul Qadir. Jaffar, a former fast bowler, and Shoaib, a former opener, had been named in the interim selection committee announced last month. The PCB also named another former player, Mohammad Ilyas, in charge of the junior selection committee.Jaffar, who has been a selector since April 2007, was made the head of the interim committee last month, with Shoaib and Ijaz Ahmed as the other members. Ijaz has been dropped after Qadir’s inclusion, but he is expected to take over as a fielding coach, either with the Pakistan team or at the National Cricket Academy. The junior selection committee comprises Ilyas, who played ten Tests in the 1960s, and five others, including Basit Ali, the former Test batsman. The five have been picked by region: Basit from Karachi, Ali Ahmed from Lahore, Farrukh Zaman from North-West Frontier Province Asif Baloch from Baluchistan and Afzal Gujjar from Hyderabad.Zaman played a solitary Test for Pakistan, against New Zealand in 1976, while Ahmed and Baloch are former first-class players. Ilyas also happens to be the father-in-law of banned Pakistan opener Imran Farhat – he and his brother Humayun joined the ICL last year. Selectors on both committees will be paid for their full-time roles. The new PCB regime has brought in several administrative changes since Ijaz Butt took over as chairman, with many former players being given a role. Intikhab Alam returned for his third stint as national coach, Javed Miandad took over as the PCB’s director-general, Aamer Sohail was appointed director of the National Cricket Academy and Wasim Bari was made the director of human resources and administration.

Leicester failed with late Djed Spence move

Leicester City’s transfer window was a successful one for several reasons, yet a failed last-minute swoop for Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence may leave manager Brendan Rodgers with a sour taste.

What’s the story?

The highly-rated 21-year-old was linked with a move to the Midlands outfit in recent weeks, and, according to The Northern Echo, Leicester were one of several sides interested in securing Spence’s services on Deadline Day as they searched for cover and competition on the right-hand side.

It’s believed that the club’s hierarchy made contact with Middlesbrough over a possible move for the Englishman, but Nottingham Forest beat them to his signature, securing Spence on a season-long loan deal.

Brendan Rodgers will have been gutted

The Foxes brought in the likes of Boubakary Soumare, Patson Daka and Jannik Vestergaard, amongst others, to complete a highly efficient summer at the King Power Stadium, although one area remains particularly threadbare.

Marc Albrighton remains the only natural right-winger in Rodgers’ first-team squad following the departure of Cengiz Under, with both Harvey Barnes and Ademola Lookman preferring the opposite flank.

And although Spence has played a large portion of his career at full-back, he’s equally adept further up the pitch, while his presence would also have allowed Ricardo Pereira to fill in on the wing as well.

However, despite Leicester’s last-minute attempts to address the obvious gap, their efforts proved to be unsuccessful, and the youngster moved to a club currently marooned at the bottom of the Championship table.

As a result, Rodgers is likely to have been left gutted. Director of football Jon Rudkin has worked wonders in the transfer market since taking over the reins, but his inability to get this deal over the line may cost Leicester this season.

Recording consecutive fifth-place finishes in the top-flight is a remarkable achievement for the Foxes, yet a lack of squad depth has left them wondering what could have been had injuries not stripped them of their star performers.

It’s hard to criticise Leicester’s recruitment team given the minor miracles they’ve pulled off in recent times, although Spence slipping away could be one they come to regret come May.

Zaheer fined 80% of match fee for send-off

The India fast bowler Zaheer Khan was fined 80% of his match fee on Tuesday for unsporting conduct during India’s dominant victory. Zaheer took three wickets in four balls on the final morning to secure India’s 320-run win before attending a hearing with the ICC match referee Chris Broad.Zaheer pleaded guilty to a Level 2 offence for conduct contrary to the spirit of the game after the dismissal of Matthew Hayden in Australia’s second innings on Monday. He was fielding when Hayden was dismissed lbw to Harbhajan Singh and “circled the batsman and shouted at him in an aggressive manner”.”Clearly, this sort of behaviour is not acceptable at any level of cricket – it showed a lack of respect for the player who had been dismissed,” Broad said. “Respect for the opposition was something that we talked about in the pre-series meeting I had with both captains and so it was disappointing that Zaheer behaved in this way.”Broad considered Zaheer’s good disciplinary record in delivering the fine. “He also pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and was very apologetic while also promising not to repeat the offence,” Broad said.Hayden complained to umpire Rudi Koertzen, who was standing at square leg, when he left the ground in the over before tea on the fourth day. Hayden’s dismissal sparked a collapse, with Australia losing five wickets for nine runs to slump to 58-5 while chasing an unlikely victory target of 516.Koertzen and Asad Rauf intervened on a number of occasions during the match to call for calm. India’s captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni did not feel there was a problem with the behaviour of some of his players – Harbhajan Singh was particularly animated on occasions – during the Test.”The match referee decides that,” Dhoni said. “If there is some aggressive cricket in the field going on, I prefer that. The guys are not really crossing the boundary, so it is okay.”Ponting said he did not mind “chitchat” on the field, but “if players do overstep the line then the umpires get involved”. “They did get involved a couple of times in this game,” he said. “We all know the referee is involved in the Zaheer Khan incident from yesterday [Monday].”India, who lost 2-1 to Australia in a fractious series in 2007-08, were aggressive throughout the match, playing in the style of their opponents.Dhoni downplayed the impact the attitude had in contributing to the success, which gave India a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.”The main way to beat Australia is to play good, consistent cricket,” he said. “If it [the way to beat them] was by using verbals we would have hired some guys who are good at that stuff. Ultimately you’ve got to play good cricket. A bit of verbal chitchat going around is fine, it gives some excitement to the game, but it’s got to be between the boundaries.”

Derby dealt triple injury blow

Derby County have been dealt a triple injury blow ahead of their upcoming Carabao Cup clash.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by Derbyshire Live, Wayne Rooney looks set to be without the trio of Tom Lawrence, Festy Ebosele and Kornell McDonald, in addition to longer-term absentees Colin Kazim-Richards, Jason Knight and Krystian Bielik, for the trip to Sheffield United on Tuesday night.

The 35-year-old revealed that Lawrence, who has been sidelined due to a groin injury, will not be back in time for the Carabao Cup fixture tonight and will be touch-and-go for the Nottingham Forest game at the weekend.

Rooney also claimed that McDonald, who is suffering a hamstring injury, will more than likely return to action after the international break; while Ebosele, who has a knock to his knee, is another major doubt for the trip to Yorkshire.

Rooney will be gutted

Considering just how small Derby’s first team squad currently is, with Rooney having just 15 fit players at his disposal, the fact that none of Lawrence, Ebosele or McDonald look set to be available for the trip to Bramall Lane is sure to have left the 35-year-old gutted.

The continued absence of Lawrence will come as a particularly big blow, as the attacking midfielder impressed for the Rams last season, scoring three goals and providing one assist over his 23 Championship appearances. He averaged a SofaScore match rating of 6.88 – ranking the 27-year-old as Derby’s sixth-best performer in the second tier.

However, it appears as if Rooney will have to make do without Lawrence, in addition to Ebosele or McDonald, for the Sheffield United game – a fixture in which the 35-year-old will undoubtedly be hoping for another positive result, in order to continue the Rams’ impressive run of form so far in their 2021/22 campaign.

O Cruz-Maltino começou o segundo tempo no ataque.

Me sinto privilegiado.

Upbeat Sri Lanka look to seal series

Preview to the second Test between Sri Lanka and India, at Galle

The Preview by S Rajesh30-Jul-2008
Mahela Jayawardene averages more than 99 in Galle, and has scored double-centuries in each of his last two Tests here © AFP
Match factsThursday July 31 – Monday August 4, 2008
Start time 10.15am (0445GMT)Big PictureAfter the annihilation at the SSC, the Indians have plenty of questions to answer in the second Test at Galle. The gulf between the two teams was so vast, and India were so abject in all departments, that Anil Kumble will be justified in believing that things can only get better. The bad news is the improvement will have to be dramatic for India to have any chance of levelling the series; the good news is they have done it before in Sri Lanka. The last time India toured here, in 2001, they lost the first Test by ten wickets, and then bounced back to win the second by seven wickets.Sri Lanka’s display in the first Test was so emphatic, though, that it seems unlikely they will slip up like they had then. They’re coming back to a venue which has brought them plenty of success and one that is hosting only its second Test since being ravaged by the tsunami in 2004. Sri Lanka couldn’t finish the job against England last year despite dismissing them for 81; this time, they’ll hope to seal the series with one Test still to play.Form guide (last 5 Tests) Sri Lanka WLWDD
India LWLDDWatch out forThe spin wizards: Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis didn’t give India a chance in the first Test, and they’ll ask plenty of questions of the batsmen’s technique in Galle as well.Sachin Tendulkar scored only 39 runs in two innings in the first Test but the manner in which he tackled the spinners bodes well for future contests. He needs 133 more to become Test cricket’s leading run-scorer, so there is plenty of motivation for him to turn on the run tap.The review system: The first experiment with the use of more technology in decision making wasn’t an unqualified success and the system will be under scrutiny again in Galle. Mark Benson, who reversed three decisions at the SSC after consulting with third umpire Rudi Koertzen, will be watching the replays this time while Koertzen does the on-field duty.Team newsSo utterly dominant were Sri Lanka at the SSC that they’re almost certain to field an unchanged line-up, unless a last-minute injury or illness forces a change. The only aspect which disappointed in the first Test was the fast-bowling department. The new-ball bowlers took only one wicket, and Chaminda Vaas didn’t take any, with his pace dipping to as low as 110 kph at times. Dammika Prasad has been added to the squad because of the pace he offers but it’s unlikely Sri Lanka will sacrifice Vaas’ swing, control and experience.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Michael Vandort, 2 Malinda Warnapura, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Muttiah Muralitharan, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Nuwan Kulasekara.Despite the first Test debacle, India’s batting and bowling line-ups are likely to remain unchanged as well. The only change they might consider is the wicketkeeper. Dinesh Karthik dropped a couple of chances at the SSC and failed with the bat as well. He attempted a hopeless slog off Muralitharan in the first innings and edged limply to slip in the second. However, Kumble indicated India wouldn’t make any changes, which suggests Parthiv Patel will have to wait to play his first Test since October 2004.India (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Sourav Ganguly, 6 VVS Laxman, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 Anil Kumble (capt), 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ishant Sharma.Umpires: Billy Doctrove and Rudi Koertzen. : Mark BensonPitch & conditionsThe pitch is likely to be another turner which will suit Sri Lanka. What might not suit them as much is the weather forecast with thunderstorms likely throughout the game. With India fighting to level the series, that’s a piece of information Anil Kumble won’t like either.Stats & Trivia Sri Lanka have won six out of 12 Tests in Galle, losing only two. All their wins have been comprehensive – three by an innings, two by ten wickets, and one by 315 runs. Muralitharan needs nine more wickets to get to 100 Test scalps at Galle. His 91 wickets have come in only 12 games at an average of 16.50 and an economy-rate of 1.96 runs per over. Mahela Jayawardene has a Test average of 99.21 at this ground, with four hundreds and six fifties in 17 innings. He has scored double-hundreds in his last two Tests here. Against England last year, which was the first Test in Galle since the tsunami, seamers took 16 of the 20 wickets which fell to bowlers. Chaminda Vaas had match figures of 4 for 65 while Chanaka Welegedara took 4 for 76.Quotes”These are the conditions that you grow up with. I have a liking for SSC and Galle. I don’t know, maybe it’s because of the fans or the atmosphere.”
“One down is one down, whether you’re in Australia or Sri Lanka, so it’s a matter of regrouping. We’ve done that and spent quality time discussing issues on and off the field, seeing how we can cope and come back. We’ve done that in the past with the same set of players and there is definitely a lot of experience and resilience in this team.”

VDB could be crucial to United’s future

Manchester United have reportedly ended their interest in Eduardo Camavinga, Saul Niguez and Ruben Neves, with Paul Pogba now set to remain at the club, but it could be another midfielder who has the biggest impact at Old Trafford in the years to come.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, French giants Paris Saint-Germain can no longer afford to sign Pogba this summer following their shock move for six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.

However, the report claims that the highly-rated 28-year-old is expected to depart United as a free agent for the second time in 12 months’ time, meaning current understudy Donny van de Beek should have an ideal opportunity to shine.

The Netherlands international arrived in Manchester for £40 million prior to the 2020/21 campaign following two standout seasons with boyhood club Ajax, yet he struggled to settle on English shores, limiting him to just four Premier League starts.

Now though, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must place his faith in the technically gifted maestro, potentially saving the club millions when it comes to finding Pogba’s successor.

Fans would love to see him flourish

After scoring 41 goals and providing 34 assists in 175 games for Ajax, as well as winning a domestic double in 2018/19 as they reached the Champions League semi-finals, Van de Beek arrived at Old Trafford with high expectations.

Nevertheless, the new environment and physical, fast-paced nature of the Premier League often looked a bit too much for the midfielder to take in last term, although he did show his true potential on occasions.

One such time was against Istanbul Basaksehir while on European duty, and his impressive showing drew praise from former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

“I thought Van de Beek was close to perfect. He is so unselfish, he can just fit in and play the right balls everywhere,” said the BT Sports pundit.

The technically gifted midfielder has embarked on physical transformation over the summer months after injury meant he had to pull out of Hollands Euro 2020 squad, improving his strength, balance and agility.

“He’s put on a bit of muscle,” Solskjaer said of the Van de Beek “He’d had last season to learn about English football, and he’s used the summer well.

“You never know how players from abroad come in. Some players need a year. You see Fred’s development, but there are other players that just come in and take to it straight away. It depends.”

And now it’s time for Solsjaer to reward Van de Beek’s dedication with a string of regular starts, allowing him to showcase his true, top-class quality on a consistent basis.

With Marcus Rashford sidelined until October through injury and Jesse Lingard unavailable after testing positive for Covid, Pogba could take up residency on the left-wing for the first few weeks of the new campaign, allowing the Dutchman a chance to prove that he can be the World Cup-winning star’s natural heir.

Every club’s fans love a comeback story, but no side is more associated with them than United, and the fanbase would surely love to witness Van de Beek begin his this season.
