Australia fend off Tamim to earn clean sweep

Tamim Iqbal’s one-man entertainment show was not enough to turn Darwin into Cardiff as Australia wrapped up a 3-0 cleansweep with a 73-run victory over Bangladesh. Tamim mastered the slow surface better than anyone had all week. He showed more flair than Australia’s key man Michael Hussey but only two of Tamim’s colleagues reached double figures and three wickets to James Hopes led to a familiar result.Bangladesh were chasing 199, which despite their batting woes on this tour looked like a vaguely feasible target. When Tamim lashed the likes of Hopes and Mitchell Johnson there were some nervous flutters from Michael Clarke, who was part of the team when Bangladesh upset Australia in Cardiff in 2005.Several facets of Bangladesh’s game came together on this occasion: Tamim was on fire, their spinners bowled terrifically tightly and their fielding was sharp. Again, the disappointment was the rest of their batting as several men threw their wickets away unnecessarily. It was all the more frustrating for Bangladesh this time because, the way Tamim was playing, they had a genuine chance. He made their first half-century of the series and finished with 63, skying a catch off Shane Watson as he ran out of colleagues. He ended up with more than half of his team’s 125 and the Man-of-the-Match award. Tamim was so enthusiastic that one attempted pull off Hopes finished with the bat flying halfway to the square-leg umpire after he failed to connect with the ball.More often he did make powerful contact. A cracking drive for four over mid-on from Hopes was followed next ball by a cleanly-struck six to the same spot. But Hopes easily got through the defences of Mahmudullah and trapped Dhiman Ghosh lbw, having already removed Tamim’s most important partner, Shakib Al Hasan.Shakib had batted well for 27, although he was dropped at third man on 14. His luck ran out when he tried to pull Hopes but failed to connect properly and lobbed a catch to Michael Hussey at midwicket. It was the end of Bangladesh’s best stand of the series and, as it turned out, the end of their chances. The pair had led a good recovery after the top order stumbled to 3 for 22.Mohammad Ashraful fell to an awful piece of batting for the third time in the series. As the captain and arguably best batsman in a young side, his approach in the middle must be a major concern for the coaching staff. They had 50 overs to score 199. What they needed from this innings, as they have through the whole series, was patience and concentration. Instead Ashraful showed no application. He had 3 on the board when he drove Stuart Clark in the air with no real control and was taken by Michael Clarke at point. Before wandering off the Marrara Cricket Ground, Ashraful stood for a moment and looked down the pitch, seemingly wondering what had gone wrong. He had not learned from his mistake from Clark’s previous ball, when he drove in the air straight to cover, where Hopes spilled what he should have taken.Just as bad was Alok Kapali’s brain explosion as he tried to pull a Johnson ball that was nowhere near short enough and lost his off stump as a result. Clark had already accounted for Junaid Siddique with a nasty bouncer that was fended to first slip. Bangladesh really needed to take note of the way Hussey, the Player of the Series, had batted to nudge Australia to 5 for 198.His painstaking unbeaten 57 ensured a competitive total despite the strong efforts of Bangladesh in the field. He struck a couple of boundaries towards the end but for most of the innings concentrated solely on batting out the overs, something Bangladesh failed to do in any of the three ODIs.Scoring was tough for Australia. blared over the PA system and it was a prescient choice as a sharp Bangladesh threw down the stumps several times. Such was Australia’s trouble finding gaps, particularly against the spin of Shakib and Abdur Razzak, that they started taking suicidal singles.Shane Watson (27) did not trust Clarke’s call and his hesitation cost him when Mashrafe Mortaza and Ghosh combined to find him short. Clarke himself was stranded out of his ground when he bunted to the off side, hared for a run and watched as Kapali’s throw shattered the stumps.David Hussey fell in similar fashion when Ashraful at mid-off was accurate, although the one they needed to get was the one they missed. When Michael Hussey had 6 he scampered through for a run and was well short when the throw narrowly passed by. Bangladesh can only dream of what might have happened had the shy hit.As it was they tied Australia up impressively. No boundaries came off the bat between the 14th and 42nd overs. By the close of Australia’s innings, Bangladesh’s confidence had lifted appreciably. If only their batsman had done the same.

Liam Kennedy confirms Newcastle want Hamza Choudhury

Shields Gazette reporter Liam Kennedy has confirmed Newcastle United are looking to sign Hamza Choudhury before the transfer window slams shut.

It appears as though the Magpies are closing in on their first signing of the summer after the club agreed a fee in excess of £20million for Arsenal’s Joe Willock.

The midfielder is set to head to St James’ Park on a permanent basis after enjoying a successful loan spell with Newcastle last season. During his temporary stay on Tyneside, Willock became the first player since Alan Shearer to score in seven consecutive Premier League outings.

But Magpies boss Steve Bruce wants to strengthen his midfield further by poaching Leicester City’s Choudhury, who saw a loan move to Newcastle fall through at the end of the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old made just four Premier League starts last term and Kennedy has revealed the central midfielder remains on Bruce’s wishlist after narrowly missing out earlier this year.

He told The Transfer Tavern: “He is a player who hasn’t ever come off the wanted list. He was a hair’s breadth away from signing in January on a loan deal.

“Hamza Choudhury is a player that Steve Bruce rates and they were very close to signing. They thought it would happen but Brendan Rodgers pulled the plug in January and kept him on at Leicester.”

Taylor responds in kind to England's aggression

Ross Taylor is many things: gifted, certainly; confident of course. Predictable? Perhaps not. Yet on a day which saw four New Zealand wickets fall, his breathless 67 has given his side the edge when England had their tails up. When bad light forced an early close, New Zealand had reached a reasonably comfortable 202 for 4 with Taylor not-out.His 52-ball fifty, his fourth in Tests, staved off a resurgent afternoon bowling performance England who, led by the tireless Ryan Sidebottom, reduced New Zealand from a solid 80 without loss to a shaky 123 for 4. What made Taylor’s performance all the more impressive was its speed and range of strokes; as ever, he was in top gear from the off, and while his detractors must find it infuriating when a crunching drive finds extra cover’s gleeful hands, they can’t complain on days like today when the gaps were threaded with such precision and panache. Brendon McCullum had fallen for 11, and Jacob Oram batted like a blindman in a hurricane. New Zealand needed Taylor, and he duly responded. He was indebted to New Zealand’s openers, however. In the past four years, the team has tried 14 different pairs at the top of the order – never with any consistent success – but, at last, they might have found one. For now, at least. Jamie How and Aaron Redmond’s attacking partnership was New Zealand’s first of fifty or more since How and Craig Cumming in 2006, and their highest since Stephen Fleming and Mark Richardson put on 163 at Trent Bridge four years ago. Little evidence was seen of Redmond’s stickability at Lord’s, but there was plenty this morning. Indeed, perhaps the most telling aspect of the passage was the pair’s dismissive attitude of Monty Panesar, who took 18 cheap wickets in two Tests at the ground prior to today, who was introduced after just 37 unimpressive minutes of mediocre fast bowling. The Old Trafford pitch, famed for its pace, played like a pudding.Panesar was hurried into the attack, but in spite of his excellent record at the ground, not even he could stem the flow of runs – even with the grip he gained. This, though, was due in part to a clear policy of attack from both batsmen, Remond lifting him over the top for a brutal four before How swept him over midwicket, nearly for six. New Zealand weren’t just staving off England’s attack: they were dominating, and How brought up his third fifty from 75 balls with a calm tuck off his hip. Panesar was nullified and muted. So was a perplexed Michael Vaughan.Enter Sidebottom and, for the umpteenth time since his remarkable international renaissance last year, the game was suddenly changed. Replacing Stuart Broad 20 minutes before lunch, Sidebottom brought himself around the wicket and found several deliveries to move away from Redmond. But, in a brilliant set-up, he moved one back into the right-hander who fatally shouldered arms, the ball clipping his off bail. England weren’t done yet: in Sidebottom’s next over, again around the wicket, he straightened one from wide of the crease into Marshall’s pads, and England had their second wicket to levy the balance.Whatever England enjoyed for lunch clearly did the trick. Anderson – so insipid in the morning – bowled with genuine hostility and fire, removing How for 64 with a fine outswinger. McCullum threatened, as he always will, clattering Panesar over the top. However, Panesar out-thought him with a wonderfully flighted delivery that stopped on McCullum, his thick edge parrying off Tim Ambrose’s gloves to Paul Collingwood at first slip who held a skilful catch to his right. New Zealand’s promising start had been ripped apart from 80 without loss to a precarious 123 for 4.The real excitement came from Anderson, though. On a pitch greased up by persistent Manchester drizzle, he tore into Daniel Flynn and Taylor and although he leaked runs, no batsman looked comfortable against him. A vicious, straight bouncer hurried onto Flynn who couldn’t snap his head out of the way, the ball hammering into (and removing) his left front tooth. It was a ferocious, bloody blow and he was forced to retire. Most intriguingly of all, Oram – masterful at Lord’s last week – was similarly nervous and incompetent against Anderson’s continued barrage of short-pitched brutes. Time after time he fended bouncers off his gloves (one of which cannoned off his helmet) and, as tea approached, he looked remarkably hapless for a man fresh from a Test hundred at Lord’s.What a contrast it was, then, to see Taylor pound his way to fifty. A straight drive off Anderson oozed class; a firm cut off Panesar demonstrated his feet were moving nicely; his natural petulant aggression came through with a monstrous pull over midwicket before two memorable cuts, hit with astonishing power, took him to fifty. Broad, like Anderson, was guilty of overpitching and Taylor – unlike any of his team-mates – had found sublime timing upon which to capitalise. His and Oram’s fifth-wicket fifty came from 75 momentum-grasping balls.Manchester’s mizzle threatened for much of the afternoon and eventually bad light called off play shortly before tea. New Zealand go into the second day with their noses just about in front, keenly aware of the need for a big first innings.

NSW on long road to first-innings points

BRISBANE, Oct 18 AAP – New South Wales dug in for the long haul towards first innings points against Queensland on the third day of the Pura Cup match at the Gabba today.

AAP18-Oct-2002BRISBANE, Oct 18 AAP – New South Wales dug in for the long haul towards first innings points against Queensland on the third day of the Pura Cup match at the Gabba today. At tea, the Blues were 2-218 in their first innings – still trailing the Bulls by 289 runs in a match which needs a rush of wickets to have any chance of a result. That won’t happen if the match maintains a pattern which has yielded just two wickets in the last five sessions, but it hasn’t been a batting paradise.Matthew Phelps has taken 258 balls for his 80 not out, while Michael Clarke, who joined Phelps at the crease in the 37th over, was unbeaten on 75 at the break.Michael Bevan was the only batsman out today when he was softened up by consecutive short balls from Michael Kasprowicz (1-45) before edging a pull shot from the next delivery to wicketkeeper Wade Seccombe.Bevan failed to add to his overnight score of 23 despite facing 25 balls today.Phelps and Clarke struggled for runs against some tight bowling, taking 16 runs from one 15-over stretch dominated by Bulls paceman Ashley Noffke (0-46), who went 44 deliveries without conceding a run.But Clarke still showed why he is rated as one of the most promising batsmen in the country, playing some delightful shots mixed with some streaky swings as he tried to increase the run-rate.
