Preece makes Aston Villa claim on Grealish

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered a fresh update on the future of Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish.

What’s the story?

Writing initially on Twitter, he said:

In the accompanying article, Preece added: “Grealish is rightly having some much-needed time off after the Euros with his future to be ironed out once and for all when he returns. Villa expect to have clarity on Grealish’s future before the month’s out.

“BirminghamLiveÂhas been told how Grealish is still expected to sign a new deal but, again, a lot can change. Ultimately, and the bottom line is this: it’ll be Grealish’s decision should City go in strong for him which they’re yet to do. There’s been no bid while CEO Christian Purslow has always denied that there’s a buy-out clause in Grealish’s £125,000-a-week contract which he signed 10 months ago.

“Club insiders both at Villa and City have gone quiet over Grealish’s future, with both clubs keeping their cards close to their chests. BirminghamLive has been told, though, that City must sell off first-team players if they’re to fund a British transfer record and, until that happens, then deals for Kane and/or Grealish appear unlikely.”

Fans will love it

Make no mistake about it, Grealish staying at Villa Park this summer would be the biggest and best piece of business Dean Smith’s side could do, regardless of any new high-profile signings.

The Villa captain showed once again in Euro 2020 with England the kind of top talent that he is, including an impressive game-changing display against Germany in the last 16 when he had a hand in both of the Three Lions’ goals.

Preece’s update that the expectation is that Grealish will put pen to paper on a new contract, and that City will need to sell players first before making a move for the likes of the Villa man and Spurs’ Harry Kane, is one which will surely delight the Midlands club’s supporters.

Meanwhile, a new update has emerged on Villa’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez…

Lord MacLaurin ready to stand for third term

The Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Lord MacLaurin, has given the clearest indication yet that he intends to seek re-election to the post later this year

Ralph Dellor & Stephen Lamb13-May-2002The Chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Lord MacLaurin, has given the clearest indication yet that he intends to seek re-election to the post later this year. Speaking at the ECB’s Annual General Meeting at Trent Bridge this morning, Lord MacLaurin, 65, indicated that he is keen to serve another term, provided the county boards will subscribe to his plans for the future.During his Chairmanship Lord MacLaurin has overseen the introduction of central England contracts and a two-division County Championship. While accepting that England are not yet a world-beating team, he spoke highly of the efforts of the coach, Duncan Fletcher, and the captain, Nasser Hussain, to make the side a more competitive force over the past two years. He confirmed his intention to write a letter to each of the county chairmen over the next two days, explaining his plans for the future.”I believe we are on the cusp of achieving further great things forcricket,” he said. “I have thought long and hard about my own role in continuing to move the game forward, and know that I have the experience and determination to drive the ECB to the next stage of its development.”Someone asked me recently whether I thought I had finished the job. My answer was an unequivocal `no’. There is still a great deal to be done. Still a great need for cricket to change and modernise in a number of areas.”Lord MacLaurin, who has been ECB Chairman since its inception five years ago, had previously stated that he would not offer himself for re-election in the face of any external challenge. Earlier this year the Surrey Chairman, Mike Soper, indicated his intention to stand for the post.”We need a governance structure at the ECB that involves less convoluted decision-making and more empowered leadership,” he said.”What this means in practice is that we need a slimmed-down, re-configured and more empowered ECB management board that – in the same way as a public company – reports twice yearly to all of our shareholders.”I believe we need to cut down the ECB’s cumbersome committee structure as part of making ourselves more efficient and professional. It is both expensive and overly bureaucratic. If we do it, there could be about £200,000 worth of savings a year to be realised.”

Gilchrist reprimanded for Muralitharan comments

Australian vice captain Adam Gilchrist has received a formal reprimand for weekend comments deemed to have been detrimental to the interests of cricket.

John Polack30-May-2002Australian vice captain Adam Gilchrist has received a formal reprimand for weekend comments deemed to have been detrimental to the interests of cricket.Gilchrist was made aware of his fate at the end of an Australian Cricket Board (ACB) hearing in Sydney this evening. His appearance at the three-and-a-half hour long hearing, before ACB commissioner Alan Sullivan, followed remarks made on Sunday in which he suggested that Sri Lankan off spinner Muttiah Muralitharan possessed an illegal bowling action.Gilchrist escaped the prospect of being either fined or suspended for his actions, instead drawing the lowest punishment among a list of ten possible penalties prescribed under the ACB’s Code of Behaviour.Under the provisions of the Code, he was not permitted to make any public statement about the decision and duly left the offices of Cricket New South Wales without offering further comment.ACB Chief Executive, James Sutherland, who participated in the hearing by means of a telephone hookup from Melbourne, meanwhile said that he was satisfied that the case had been handled appropriately.”As administrators we do not enjoy taking action against our own players, particularly those of Adam’s upstanding nature,” he said.”The ACB recognises Adam’s outstanding contribution to the image and success of Australian cricket through his conduct, both on and off the field.”However the Code of Behaviour is in place for a very important reason. Its fundamental purpose is to protect the integrity and credibility of the game of cricket, in this case, particularly in the context of the ACB’s relationship with other countries.”The ACB’s decision to reprimand Gilchrist followed a Victorian newspaper’s publication of comments about Muralitharan’s action that the world’s number one ranked batsman believed had been made in private at a Carlton Football Club function in Melbourne last Sunday.Gilchrist has the right to appeal against the imposition of the reprimand at some time within the next 24 hours. In the immediate aftermath of the hearing, it was not expected, however, that he would pursue this course of action.

Astle deserved better from his home town fans

The greatest tragedy of Nathan Astle’s world record innings at Jade Stadium on Saturday was that it was watched by so few Cantabrians

Lynn McConnell17-Mar-2002The greatest tragedy of Nathan Astle’s world record innings at Jade Stadium on Saturday was that it was watched by so few Cantabrians.Very few cricket enthusiasts in the once strong bastion of New Zealand cricket, Christchurch, will be able to say in the future, “I was there”.Attendances at the pride of Canterbury sport were little short of a disgrace throughout the Test and it can only be wondered what the ground would have looked like had it not been swamped with English supporters.Whatever the situation, Christchurch must surely have written itself off the Test match scheduling list after this was yet another demonstration of its inability to draw crowds to the South Island’s main Test venue at Jade Stadium. And the portable pitch has nothing whatsoever to do with it.It is all to do with the inability of Cantabrians to get out and support their venue. The decline in numbers has been obvious in recent years and with the ground taking on an increased appearance of a concrete jungle with the new West Stand nearing completion, the vast empty spaces, as seen in the television coverage of Astle’s innings are little short of embarrassing.Given the way the New Zealand Test team performed in Australia, there was every reason to expect some interest to be aroused among the cricket supporting fraternity. However, even the One-Day International staged in Christchurch failed to attract the expected level of interest.Given Christchurch’s standing in the cricket scheme of things this has to be a worrying trend. The likelihood always was that it would miss out on a Test next summer because a series, possibly of only two Tests against India, will be the only fare available as the World Cup is being staged in South Africa in February-March.One of those Tests is certain to be a Boxing Day match at the Basin Reserve and the other will be in the north of the North Island.Given Auckland’s similar propensity for failing to support Test matches, the most likely candidate would have to be Hamilton. But the real test will be the following summer 2003/04 when Pakistan and South Africa are due to tour. And at the moment Cantabrians have done nothing to boost their chances.

Outro 9?

– A gente tinha três. Tinha o Boselli, o Vagner Love e o Gustagol.

Gerrard provides Rangers transfer tease

Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed that the Gers are closing in on a new signing and could have an announcement soon.

The Lowdown: Gers slow in transfer market

The Gers enjoyed a magnificent term last time out as they lifted the Premiership trophy for the first time in 10 years – they didn’t even lose a game in the division (thefishy.co.uk).

A title defence and a place in the Champions League third qualifying round would suggest the Ibrox outfit need to make reinforcements, but so far only Fashion Sakala has arrived at the club (rangers.co.uk).

The Latest: Gers close to new signing

However, that appears like it may change soon. Speaking to Rangers TV, Gerrard had a transfer tease for supporters as he said:

“The recruitment lads, Ross (Wilson) and myself have worked ever so hard to identify the targets we want.

“The board and Ross know the players I want to strengthen us and make us better and give us the best chance to be successful next season.

“Hopefully we can go and deliver them. We’re really close on one piece and hopefully in the coming days we’ll have an announcement for the fans.

“I like to get them excited this time of year, they’ve been patient. There won’t be wholesale signings because the squad is strong and good.

“We’ve brought some good additions in six months ago so we’re looking for quality rather than quantity at this stage.”

The Verdict: Important

Of course, the Gers already have a strong squad which saw them win a major trophy and reach the round of 16 of the Europa League last term. However, it is vital that, even when they are on top, they do not stand still and instead continue to try and bring in players who can provide something to the team.

It is unclear as to exactly who this rumoured new arrival might be, but as Gerrard said, the 55-time Scottish champions will have done their due diligence and will have looked down every avenue. Hopefully, it will be the first in a list of several strong new acquirements.

In other news, this Rangers man has received a four-game ban.

Dexter condemns Hussain's leg theory in India

The MCC president, Ted Dexter, has gone on record as saying that Nasser Hussain, the England captain, might have kept to the letter of the law when he told left-arm spinner Ashley Giles to bowl over the wicket into the leg-side rough against Sachin

Ralph Dellor06-Mar-2002The MCC president, Ted Dexter, has gone on record as saying that Nasser Hussain, the England captain, might have kept to the letter of the law when he told left-arm spinner Ashley Giles to bowl over the wicket into the leg-side rough against Sachin Tendulkar in the Test series against India, but he was outside the spirit of the law. Now, Dexter believes that there needs to be a revision of the laws by MCC, and he is supported in that by the game’s governing body, the International Cricket Council. The ICC has been in touch suggesting that MCC might look at ways of closing this particular loophole that allows negative tactics to be employed. The tactics employed by Hussain attracted widespread condemnation, especially in India where Sunil Gavaskar, one of the country’s greatest batsmen and now both a media personality and chairman of the ICC cricket committee, tagged England as “boring.”Dexter, who was himself an innovative captain of England, said that leg-side bowling represented “a matter of pushing the laws to their limit to gain advantage.”He continued: “The umpires could have been stricter on the leg-side wide, and what we detected was an anomaly in the ICC playing conditions – just one sentence – which allowed the umpires not to intervene.”Since then we’ve been in touch with ICC – I’ve been in touch personally withSunil Gavaskar – and we’ve corresponded.”We’re thrilled that the ICC has asked the MCC for our proposals as to how todeal with it properly in the laws and the playing conditions, and we’ll seewhere we go from here.”Some critics suggested that the tactic had actually cost England the chance of squaring the series in the final Test in Bangalore. Tendulkar faced 198 balls for 90 before Giles had him stumped, but time was on India’s side even before rain came to wash out any chance of a positive result.Nevertheless, Hussain’s plan was designed specifically to counter Tendulkar in the prevailing conditions and, if the fault lay with the ICC playing conditions as Dexter maintains, it seems strange that the laws of cricket should be amended rather than the faulty playing conditions.
