Everton: Broadhead could save Rafa millions

The January transfer window is fast-approaching and Everton manager Rafa Benitez could be hard at work for the next few weeks in an attempt to bolster his squad.

His side are 14th in the Premier League table and have only amassed five wins from 17 matches thus far, highlighting their struggles on the pitch.

Whilst the club could dip into the market to source external solutions to some of their problems, as they are reportedly doing with Vitaliy Mykolenko, they could also find the answers they need from within.

Save millions

Benitez could save Everton millions by recalling forward Nathan Broadhead from his loan spell with Sunderland to improve his attacking options.

Demarai Gray is the only player with more than three Premier League goals and Salomon Rondon has only managed one strike in 11 matches. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been restricted to three appearances this season and the Toffees have struggled to find a suitable replacement for him.

In Broadhead, the Spaniard may already have a solution to the side’s goalscoring woes within the club. They could recall him from his loan and offer him the chance to show what he can do in the first-team at Goodison Park, as he could save millions of pounds next month in the transfer window if he is able to make an impact.

Athletic journalist Patrick Boyland recently praised the young attacker for his form with the League One side. He Tweeted: “Nathan Broadhead excelling at Sunderland. Regular competitive games making world of difference but too good for League One really.”

The reporter added: A lot to like. Mobile, finishes well, can play across the front line.”

In the third tier this season, the 23-year-old has scored five goals in eight starts. He has also scored two times in three League Cup outings for the Black Cats, including a strike against Arsenal at The Emirates earlier this week.

He timed his run to perfection to beat £50m centre-back Ben White to the ball before delightfully dinking it over £19.2m shot-stopper Bernd Leno to pull a goal back for Sunderland in the match. It was his only shot of the game as The Gunners ran riot in a 5-1 win, showing that he can be clinical when a chance presents itself – against Premier League opposition.

As shown by the figures spent on White and Leno, he was not up against – with all due respect – other players fresh out of the academy. He produced a moment of quality against top-flight opponents and Everton could use a player with his natural instinct for goals.

That is why Benitez could save the club millions in January by avoiding splashing out on a new striker and recalling the Welsh predator to give him an opportunity in the second half of the campaign.

Surprise captain Henriques guides Blues

Moises Henriques stood tall in his first match as the New South Wales captain with a steadying half-century that helped the Blues to 5 for 299 at stumps on the opening day

Moises Henriques stood tall in his first match as the New South Wales captain with a steadying half-century that helped the Blues to 5 for 299 at stumps on the opening day. Henriques, 22, was a surprise choice to lead the state in his 14th first-class match when the intended skipper, Stuart Clark, was ruled out due to a back injury. His 65 was a key in the New South Wales recovery after they slipped to 4 for 154, having just lost 4 for 21 following a strong opening partnership. Henriques combined with Usman Khawaja for a 137-run fifth-wicket stand that allowed the Blues to push on to a strong total at the close, with Khawaja on 78 and Steven Smith on 4.Henriques’ opposing captain Chris Simpson did the damage for Queensland with 3 for 51 and he turned the match temporarily in the Bulls’ favour after the positive opening efforts of Phil Jaques and Phillip Hughes. Both men are hoping to push their cases for Test recalls and they pushed the score to 0 for 133 in the 37th over.Jaques, who appeared the most logical captaincy option in the absence of Clark, made 56 before he was caught off the bowling of Ben Cutting. Hughes struck eight fours and a six in his 75 before he was caught by Cutting having top-edged a sweep off Simpson.

Newcastle: Pete Graves drops transfer claim

A Newcastle United transfer claim has been made regarding their business in the window in the coming days…

What’s the talk?

Sky Sports reporter Pete Graves has dropped an exciting update which promises a huge week for those associated with the Magpies.

He tweeted: “Expecting transfer breakthroughs at #nufc this week. Been fairly amused by some of the names mentioned in certain places recently, however there are players under serious discussion that haven’t been mentioned anywhere yet.”

Fans will be delighted

Newcastle fans will be delighted with this update as it suggests that they are in for an exciting week of action in the transfer market.

The Magpies are in a desperate situation in the Premier League and new additions could be vital to their efforts to remain in the top flight. They are 19 games into the season and have mustered a measly 11 points, just one more than bottom-placed Norwich, with a mere one win to their name so far.

Dean Smith’s Canaries are also the only team who have conceded as many goals as the Toon (42) in the league, highlighting their fragility at the back. Eddie Howe’s side have conceded far too many goals, during his tenure as well as under Steve Bruce and Graeme Jones, and that could need to be addressed this month.

Their struggles on the pitch over the course of the first 19 games suggest that the current playing squad is not good enough to save their top-flight status. The lowest points tally to secure Premier League survival in the competition’s history has been 33 and the Magpies are currently on course to end with 22, falling well short of what is required to remain in the division.

This is why strengthening the squad with new signings this month could be crucial to Howe’s chances of avoiding the drop. Therefore, fans will be delighted that the club are expecting ‘breakthroughs’ in negotiations in the coming days, for it suggests that players will be coming in to bolster the squad as soon as possible.

Supporters will surely not want any deals dragging out until late in the month, particularly near deadline day, and they will be buzzing to see some business being done early. It means that they may be able to relax during the latter stages of the month instead of watching the club rush around and potentially make panic buys which do not make sense from a footballing or financial point of view.

Centurion Butt not brooding over run-outs

Salman Butt atoned for some of the mistakes of the second day with a valuable third Test hundred for Pakistan at the Bellerive Oval

Salman Butt: “Anybody in his (Yousuf’s) place would’ve been like that so I don’t mind even if he said something. We’ve played enough cricket not to think about these small things”•Getty Images

Salman Butt atoned for some of the mistakes of the second day with avaluable third Test hundred for Pakistan at the Bellerive Oval. Butt’ston couldn’t take Pakistan past the follow-on, but it helped pushAustralia to bat again in any case, taking a little bit more time out ofthe Test and improving Pakistan’s chances of escaping a 12th successivedefeat to the hosts.Butt was blamed by his captain Mohammad Yousuf in unusually candid sentiments for his “lazy running” which led to two critical run-outs onthe second afternoon, of Yousuf himself, and Umar Akmal. Butt, however, played down both the dismissals and notions of a potentially strainedrelationship with his captain because of it or that his hundred made upfor the mistakes.”When a batsman makes runs in the shape of a century, it isalways a good feeling,” Butt said. “I don’t think it has to do with therun-outs because they are part of the game and we have to carry on. It’snot happened for the first time in the game. It happened in the first Testwith [Simon] Katich and [Shane] Watson and both were in the 90s. This is part and parcel and you have to carry on and can’t think about what hashappened.”Butt said he hadn’t read what Yousuf had said, (“I didn’t ask you,” he shotback when a reporter told him anyway) but that the captain – “like anelder brother,” Butt said – would have been justified for expressing thosesentiments. “I haven’t heard anything and even if he has said so it maybe itis because he is the best player in the side and obviously the team neededhim at the time,” Butt said.”Anybody in his place would’ve been like that so I don’t mind even if hesaid something. We’ve played enough cricket not to think about these smallthings. Ok this happened, alright he is our best player no doubt and itwould’ve been very good had he stayed on and scored a big hundred but ifsomething has happened you can’t keep on moaning about it.”Butt’s hundred was his second in Australia, following his maiden one inSydney five years ago, and two more fifties mean he is the rare modernPakistani batsmen who has done well against them, in this country. “Wehaven’t played much Test cricket over the last two years,” he said.”Recently we have played about six, so it’s like a comeback after a year’slay-off from Test cricket. It is the most difficult cricket that exists.Twenty20 and ODI are much easier formats because this is a Test ofeverything, your nerves and fitness and the pitch conditions change.”Maybe the surfaces suit my game. Some of the shots that are my scoringshots are easier to play in Australia than they are in other places. But Ihaven’t played much Test cricket around the world. Out of my 27 Tests, Ihave played about six here, 5-6 in Pakistan, one in England, five in Indiaso it hasn’t been all over the world.”

UAE progress after second win

Naeemuddin Aslam and Khurram Khan’s perfectly-timed run chase took UAE to their second win in as many matches as they overcame a strong Netherlands total in the World Twenty20 Qualifier in Dubai to book a place in the Super Fours

Naeemuddin Aslam and Khurram Khan’s perfectly-timed run chase took UAE to their second win in as many matches as they overcame a strong Netherlands total in the World Twenty20 Qualifier in Dubai to book a place in the Super Fours.Despite their shock defeat of Kenya in the opening fixture, few would have expected UAE to challenge a Dutch side that did so well in the World Twenty20 in England last year. Yet in a fluctuating contest that saw one side surge ahead only for the other to claw their way back, an unbroken 101-run stand between Khan and Aslam was the clinching effort in front of an ecstatic home crowd.Coming together with UAE stumbling at 67 for 4 after almost eight overs, in pursuit of Netherlands’ 164, the pair calmly worked the ball around and picked up the odd boundary to keep the required rate in check.Aslam led the early stages but his calculated attack on Pieter Seelaar’s left-arm spin almost brought his downfall as he heaved a short ball through the outstretched hands of the deep-midwicket fielder. It ended up going for six and Aslam didn’t look back as he marched to an unbeaten 60 from 48 balls. Incredibly, given the character of Twenty20 cricket, his innings contained just four boundaries, as he and his captain ran Netherlands ragged.Khan provided serene support and the pair picked off all the bowlers with even precision. He ended up cracking the winnings runs, which also carried him to fifty in style, smashing Mudassar Bukhari for four over long on.In the end, they made light work of a target that looked imposing after Daan van Bunge clubbed 76 to rescue a Netherlands innings that was tottering on the verge of collapse. Qasim Zubair led the UAE bowling effort with 5 for 24 and his burst in the middle overs reduced Netherlands from 65 for 2 to 66 for 5 before van Bunge took charge. He butchered four sixes and six fours in his 48-ball stay, which alongside an unbeaten 32 from captain Peter Borren lifted the total to 164. Netherlands would have been confident of defending their score but UAE proved too resilient. It sets up an intriguing winner-takes-all clash between Netherlands and Kenya on Thursday, while UAE have sealed their progress into the next round as they chase their first entry into a global tournament since the 1996 World Cup.
