Brendon McCullum changed his tactics to produce a superb team innings that allowed New Zealand to take their battle with Australia into a fifth day. Standing up to a fierce wind gusting up to 120kph, McCullum smothered his attack-first mentality and overcame a distracted Australian side to finish unbeaten on 94.Crucially, McCullum built on the work of Daniel Vettori, who produced a committed 77, and took the hosts further ahead during their follow-on. By stumps on a day curtailed by rain, light and regular interruptions caused by the gale, their advantage stood at 67. It is not much, but some more wet weather is predicted on the final morning, giving them a chance of saving the game. The Australians started the day with a lead of 115 and needed five wickets but they managed only one. Mostly they wished they were inside, safe from the powerful gusts and resting after three consecutive days in the field. McCullum and Vettori kept them outside during a partnership of 126 – it was a sixth-wicket record for New Zealand against Australia – and both raised their highest scores in Trans-Tasman Tests.McCullum, who is happiest when he’s slashing boundaries, focussed successfully on batting for a long time and usually avoided the big shots that could have led to his departure. For much of the time it was an uncharacteristically gritty display, but he allowed himself some attractive flourishes. The best shot came when he pulled Mitchell Johnson out of the ground behind square and forced a lengthy search for the ball. Unfortunately for the Australians they found it, as McCullum liked hitting it.He cut Nathan Hauritz when he dropped short and eased the fast men through cover or point when they over-pitched. After lunch he thumped a drive to point that was prevented from reaching the rope by the gale, but he picked up 11 boundaries and the six during an impressive 178-ball performance.McCullum’s half-century came up with overthrows after he picked up a quick single, and he was the most comfortable man on the ground throughout the day. Vettori was almost immoveable as he showed he could have a long-term future at No. 6. After scoring 46 in the first innings Vettori, who has been promoted two spots in the order this season, delivered in another crucial situation.Rain delayed the start and the hosts resumed their second innings on 187 for 5, knowing they didn’t have much batting power after Vettori and McCullum. The pair was in control for most of the stand and the Australians were worn down by the interruptions and the unfamiliar weather. The wind was so severe that the cameras for Hot Spot were taken down and the equipment for the projection tracking stopped working, which caused a problem when McCullum survived an lbw appeal on 52 from Hauritz. McCullum didn’t play a shot to an offspinner and was hit a long way outside off stump, with Asad Rauf ruling it not out.Australia called for a referral but some of the reference tools were unavailable and the original decision stayed, which seemed to be the right one. Ricky Ponting had a lengthy discussion with the umpires and the upshot was they didn’t lose their challenge. The Australians weren’t at their best throughout, but their worst period was after lunch when Johnson dropped a caught-and-bowled opportunity above his head from Vettori on 60. Brad Haddin also failed to stump McCullum before his half-century when the batsman missed a ball from Hauritz and his back leg came out of the crease.Just when everything seemed lined up for a Vettori century, he swept at Hauritz well outside leg stump and managed to play on. He opened the day with a smart drive in the first over and collected eight fours in all, half of which came behind point. A boundary through cover off Ryan Harris brought up a much-needed half-century and Vettori also employed a range of cunning deflections during his 119-ball stay.Once Vettori exited, McCullum gained assistance from Daryl Tuffey, who was unbeaten on 23 when stumps were eventually called. Bad light and drizzle alternated to cause the disruptions in the afternoon and only 52 overs were delivered for the day.The persistent gusts forced the players to hold on to their caps and sent a helmet sitting behind Haddin all the way to the boundary. Bails weighed down by lead blew off and the cameramen standing in the stands had ropes to grab when they wobbled. Before play the wind was so strong it ripped the covers from the hands of the groundsmen and moved the light roller. The conditions helped the bowlers at the Vance Stand End, but were a severe hindrance for the men at the other one. Hauritz had to deliver into the wind most of the time and had satisfying figures of 3 for 119 from 49 overs. Doug Bollinger was unable to add an eighth wicket for the game while Johnson had brief moments of encouragement without success. Depending on what happens tomorrow, the Australians may look back at their mixed moods and conclude it was a day of missed opportunities.

Leeds struggling to sign Brenden Aaronson

Leeds United are struggling to complete a move for RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson in January, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Strong Aaronson interest

The Whites suffered a demoralising 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United on Saturday, with Jonjo Shelvey’s goal the difference between the two teams at Elland Road.

With Kalvin Phillips and Adam Forshaw out injured, the need for a midfielder to come in this month is clear, and Leeds have made a number of bids for Aaronson.

The 21-year-old has shone for Salzburg this season, starting 14 Austrian Bundesliga games and all six of their Champions League group stage matches.

The Latest: Journalist doubts Leeds’ chances of signing Aaronson

However, a fresh update has emerged regarding Leeds’ pursuit of Aaronson, with Jones telling GiveMeSport that the deal may not happen in January.

He outlined: “Leeds are definitely struggling with this Brenden Aaronson deal as I understand it for this window. They don’t have fortunes to throw around at the moment.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-32/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Big blow for Leeds

Should the Whites fail to get a deal for the American over the line, it would be a big blow, especially as a move for him has felt genuinely close in recent days.

Aaronson ticks so many boxes in terms of what Leeds are looking for, whether it be his long-term potential or his current quality, having averaged two tackles and 1.8 dribbles per game in the Champions League this season.

It is imperative that a midfielder of some kind comes in this month, or else Marcelo Bielsa’s side could find themselves incredibly light in this position and potentially getting dragged back into a relegation scrap.

In other news, Newcastle have reportedly enterted the race to sign a Leeds transfer target. Find out who it is here.

Leeds: Romano issues Aaronson update

Leeds United are really keen to complete a move for Brenden Aaronson before the January transfer window deadline on Monday…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who delivered a fresh update on the situation during a recent appearance on CBS Sports’ ‘Que Golazo’ podcast.

“Yes, it’s true. It’s true Salzburg rejected this proposal from Leeds,” he said. “They want him, they’re obsessed with him, they want to sign him. But Aaronson is an important player [for Salzburg].

“They feel that he would be perfect for Leeds immediately but the problem is Salzburg prefer to wait. They have European football, they want to keep him until the end of the season and maybe sell him in the summer.

“This is why the situation is still not easy between the clubs.

“The player would be open to this move but from the club’s side, from Leeds’ side and from Salzburg’s side, at the moment, nothing is agreed yet because they hope to keep the player until the end of the season.

“We will see what happens in the coming days. At the end of the transfer window, anything can happen. But at the moment, it’s not an easy one for Leeds.”

Gutting news

Whilst there is a glimmer of hope that the Yorkshire outfit can complete a move for their top target before next week, it seems rather unlikely on this evidence.

Romano has dealt a devastating blow to Marcelo Bielsa here as you’d imagine the Argentine is absolutely desperate for additions heading into the remainder of the current campaign.

His squad has been decimated with injuries regularly throughout the 2021/22 campaign and in some areas, they lack the strength in depth required to truly compete in the Premier League.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-lufc-transfer-rumours-gossip-bielsa-orta-radrizzani-elland-road-updates” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

They may well be clear of a relegation dogfight right now but that could quickly change with rearranged matches still to play and the likelihood of further injuries a sheer possibility, given the way things have gone already this term.

A new central midfielder is amongst the priorities, as evident by the link to Aaronson, and that’s hardly a surprise considering the Yorkshiremen haven’t signed someone in the role for four years and they are currently without a key player in the engine room in Kalvin Phillips.

The England international, who is ever so crucial to the way Bielsa sets up his Leeds team, is currently on the treatment table until March at the earliest. That’s another month minimum without such an integral cog.

He’s one of a handful of key first-team stars absent through injury – against West Ham in the Premier League recently, the Whites only had one senior pro on the bench amongst nine substitutes. That’s how bad it’s been.

Aaronson certainly fits the bill as your typical Bielsa signing – bags of potential, high work rate, good fitness and hugely versatile – but it seems as if this one will have to wait until the summer barring anything crazy before Monday.

Therefore, the Argentine head coach may be gutted heading into the second half of the campaign knowing that the club have failed to bolster his threadbare squad.

Basnahira North qualify for final

A round-up of the fourth set of matches in the SLC Inter-Provincial Tournament 2009-10

Sa'adi Thawfeeq27-Apr-2010Basnahira North, led by Thilina Kandamby, came up with another powerful batting performance to qualify for a place in the final of the Inter-provincial four-day tournament which resumed after a break of two weeks due to the country’s general elections followed by the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.Although their final league match against Wayamba ended in a draw due to interruption to bad weather in Moratuwa, Basnahira North gained enough points to remain on top of the league table and ensure their place in the final.Powerful career-best centuries from left-hander Dimuth Karunaratne (185) and wicketkeeper-batsman Kaushal Silva (158), and their massive partnership of 306 for the third wicket, helped Basnahira North run up their third total in excess of 500 in four matches. With a fine contribution of 71 from young Angelo Perera down the order, the total nearly reached 600. Wayamba didn’t have the batting to match Basnahira North and they could manage only 292, 100 of which came from Sri Lanka Test opener Michael Vandort. With little time to play for after a complete washout of play on the third day due to rain, Basnahira North did not enforce the follow-on but batted out the remaining time.Ruhuna took a step towards joining Basnahira North in the final when they grabbed vital bonus points in their drawn fixture against Kandurata at the P Sara Oval. A stroke-filled 154 from Tillakaratne Sampath, brother of Sri Lanka opener Tillakaratne Dilshan, saw Ruhuna make short work of Kandurata’s first innings total of 271, as they replied with an imposing 402 for 6 declared. With rain making play impossible on the third day, the game petered out into a tame draw. Kandurata opener Nadeera Nawala’s well-paced hundred and Geeth Alwis’ double of four wickets and 72 runs for Ruhuna were the other notable individual performances.Ruhuna meet third placed Basnahira South later this week and the outcome of that game will decide who will join Basnahira North in the final which his scheduled to be played at the SSC grounds from May 13.

West Indies seek to stay alive at home

Australia are unbeaten but not totally assured of a place in the semi-finals; West Indies could win and still miss out if Sri Lanka beat India

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale10-May-2010Match FactsTuesday, May 11, Gros Islet
Start time 1700 (2100 GMT)Chris Gayle is one of the few men capable of setting up a massive defeat for Australia•Getty Images

The Big PictureThree years ago an Australian team went through a World Cup in the Caribbean without losing a game. Michael Clarke’s Twenty20 outfit has some way to go to match that feat, but four wins from four has provided an excellent start to the tournament. Australia’s big victory over Sri Lanka has almost assured them of a place in the semi-finals, but they will be keen to keep their winning momentum going in their last Super Eights encounter against West Indies. The hosts have been impressive as well, with a loss to Sri Lanka their only blemish. Unfortunately for them, victory over Australia won’t guarantee their spot in the final four; if Sri Lanka also beat India, Chris Gayle’s team could finish with four wins from five games and still fail to progress. Much will rest on the shoulders of Gayle, whose first major contribution for the series came with his 98 against India.Australia’s three fast bowlers have been striking fear into batsmen from all teams but Gayle is one man for whom the speed could be an advantage. The quicker Dirk Nannes, Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson bowl, the faster the ball could fly off his bat. Just ask Brett Lee, who in last year’s World Twenty20 was mauled so badly by Gayle at The Oval that the ball at one stage ended up on the roof of the Bedser Stand. It would take a massive defeat for Australia to miss out; on his best day, Gayle is one man capable of inflicting such a result.Form guide (most recent first)Australia WWWWT
West Indies WLWWLWatch out for…While Gayle is West Indies’ most important player, their hopes lift significantly when secondary men like Kieron Pollard step up. Pollard has had little impact with the bat in this tournament, with scores of 8, 0, 9 and 17, and his overall batting record in Twenty20 internationals is poor. For a man who has made his name in the shortest format with domestic teams all around the world, it’s about time he did the same for West Indies.Cameron White has long been regarded as one of the best Twenty20 players in the world, but since he has taken on the vice-captaincy under Michael Clarke he has taken his game to a new level for Australia. His wonderful 64 from 26 balls against New Zealand in February forced an eliminator over and his 85 against Sri Lanka on Sunday rescued Australia to keep their unbeaten run alive.Team newsWest Indies have altered their batting order at times during this tournament but Wavell Hinds seems now to be the preferred option ahead of Narsingh Deonarine and Andre Fletcher. Nikita Miller could come in to play on the slower St Lucia pitch, but it’s hard to see which of the fast men would make way.West Indies (probable) 1 Chris Gayle (capt), 2 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Kieron Pollard, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Wavell Hinds, 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Sulieman Benn, 10 Jerome Taylor, 11 Kemar Roach. There were murmurs from Michael Clarke that Nathan Hauritz might enter calculations in St Lucia, but barring unforseen injuries it’s very unlikely Australia will change their winning team. The pace attack has been a success, Smith is keeping Hauritz out, and the captain Clarke is the only one of the batsmen who has so far failed to have a major impact.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Shane Watson, 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 Brad Haddin (wk), 5 David Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 Michael Hussey, 8 Steven Smith, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Dirk Nannes, 11 Shaun Tait.Pitch and conditionsThe quicker pitch in Barbados now gets a rest until the final, and the teams must readjust to the slower surface in Gros Islet.Stats and triviaWest Indies have lost only one game this tournament but most of their batsmen are yet to play a big role. After Gayle’s 98, the next best score by any of their players was Darren Sammy’s 30 against IrelandBy contrast, Australia’s batsmen have made five half-centuries during their four gamesDirk Nannes is leading the tournament wicket tally with 12 at 8.58 and an economy rate of 6.86; his new-ball partner Shaun Tait is equal fifth with eight victimsThe teams have met four times in Twenty20 internationals for two wins eachQuotes”This victory eased the pressure a bit but not enough to relax.”
