Villa will listen to Luiz offers in summer

Aston Villa certainly kept themselves busy behind the scenes during the recent January transfer window in terms of the deals they managed to get done, with several new players arriving and a few of the existing squad moving out on loan.

Now that the winter market has closed, it seems as though a clue has been dropped regarding one particular deal which could be under the spotlight once the summer transfer window opens.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Villa rejected a £30m bid during the recent January transfer window for Douglas Luiz and “will listen to offers around the £35m mark in the summer.”

Villa struck a deal with fellow Premier League side Manchester City back in 2019 to sign the midfielder for a reported fee of £15m.

Since then, the Brazilian has gone on to make a name for himself at Villa Park, becoming an important figure for the team with a total of 94 appearances under his belt across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing eight assists along the way.

With John McGinn being the only Villa midfielder to have racked up more minutes in the Premier League this season that Luiz, this highlights just how vital the Brazilian is for the team in that area of the pitch.

Gerrard would be furious

The importance of the 23-year-old for the Villans so far this season in terms of his performances is reflected in WhoScored currently listing him as the squad’s third-highest rated player with an overall rating of 6.91/10. Therefore, it’s safe to say that he would be a big miss for the team if he ends up leaving in the summer.

Also, with Steven Gerrard recently saying that he and his coaching staff rate the £31.5m-rated star “extremely high,” he would surely be furious to see the club potentially selling Luiz in the summer, which would be an unforgivable disaster for Johan Lange to sanction.

With journalist John Percy recently claiming that the Midlands club are looking to open talks with the midfielder with a view to signing a new contract with Villa, this should give the Holte End faithful some hope that the 23-year-old won’t be leaving in the summer.

Andrew Strauss upset at whitewash that got away

Andrew Strauss admitted he was “annoyed” that England had let slip the chance of a 5-0 whitewash

Andrew Miller at The Oval01-Jul-2010Andrew Strauss admitted he was “annoyed” that England had let slip the chance of a 5-0 whitewash against Australia, but played down suggestions that he had erred tactically in once again choosing to bowl first after winning the toss. After allowing Australia first use of a fast and true wicket, England were set an imposing target of 291, their highest run-chase of the series so far, but were bundled out by Ryan Harris for 212 in 42.4 overs.”We didn’t get enough things right today,” said Strauss. “We got off to a pretty good start with the ball, but [Michael] Clarke and [Ricky] Ponting played really well in the middle period, where we had done best in the first three games. We struggled to find ways of ‘dotting them up’, which was a little bit frustrating. We tried seven bowlers, but on a flat wicket it was easy to hit through the line of the ball.”Bowling first has been England’s modus operandi throughout the series to date, even though such a tactic flies in the face of conventional wisdom. With a varied attack that had helped to carry England to a run of eight ODI victories in a row – their best run of form since the 1992 World Cup – and batsmen of the calibre of Eoin Morgan and Kevin Pietersen, England believe they have the personnel to keep any target within reach. But that notion received a bit of a reality check on a chastening day at The Oval.”It wasn’t as good a performance as the first three, and we’ve got what we’ve deserved,” said Strauss. “The idea of chasing down anything Australia set us has worked pretty well in the first three games – and we didn’t see any particular reason to change that today. When you lose in that fashion, you always think ‘Well, maybe we should have batted first’. But I’m pretty comfortable with that decision. I just don’t think we did enough things well today.”England have improved markedly as a one-day unit in recent months, but as Ponting made clear with his memorable “bragging rights” comment at Cardiff, they have an awfully long way to go to match the achievements and consistency of Australia’s one-day side – who, after all, haven’t lost a single World Cup match in the whole of the 21st Century. Another victory at Lord’s on Saturday would transform that 5-0 ambition into a far less imposing 3-2 result. It remains to be seen whether Strauss sticks to his guns by fielding first in that game.”You’ve got to play to your strengths, it’s as simple as that,” was Ponting’s take on the tactics. “If they think it’s in their interests to keep chasing they’ll keep doing it. They obviously like bowling first and trying to chase the runs down, although it’s not my preferred way of playing. If it’s dry when you start, it always gets that little bit tougher and it makes chasing hard.”But I wasn’t as surprised they bowled first as I was at Manchester,” Ponting added. “That was a wicket I thought looked particularly dry and hard to chase on, and as the game went on it certainly was that. But they seem to be very structured in everything they are doing at the moment, the way they are playing their cricket. We’ll see what they do at Lord’s.”For Strauss, the disappointment of the result was tempered by the small successes that came out of the game, such as Michael Yardy’s maiden ODI fifty – a tenacious but even-tempoed 57 from 63 balls that prevented England’s challenge from disintegrating until the final ten overs.”He played really well, and has played a lot of innings like that for Sussex – knocking the ball around, accumulating pretty quickly, and clearly we needed him to do that today,” said Strauss. “He stepped up to the plate – and on the back of his bowling in the first three games, it was good to see him scoring some runs. If you haven’t scored a one-day international fifty before, the first one is very important – regardless of the situation of the game.”The whitewash wasn’t a secret hope. We were very hopeful we could do it,” he said. “What we were trying to focus on was getting it to 4-0, trying not to look too far ahead. But Australia did what you expect them to do; they came back hard at us today and put in the better performances. They had three excellent performances in the game, and that’s why they won.”

NUFC gem with 14 duels won was outstanding

Eddie Howe made it two wins in a row for the first time as Newcastle manager with a 3-1 win over Everton on Tuesday night.

The Magpies beat Leeds 1-0 last night and have now moved out of the bottom three with a huge win over the Toffees in the Premier League.

They had to come from behind, though, as Jamaal Lascelles scored an unfortunate own goal as a clearance off the line came back off him and into the back of the net.

Everton’s Mason Holgate returned the favour within a minute as he bundled the ball into his own net after a Lascelles’ header hit the crossbar before Ryan Fraser put the Toon ahead with a close-range finish in the second half.

Kieran Trippier then rounded off the scoring with his first goal for the club. He whipped in a stunning free-kick from distance to beat Jordan Pickford and seal the three points.

Set St. James’ alight

Never mind Fraser on the right wing, the real magic came from Allan Saint-Maximin out on the left flank as he set St. James’ Park alight with his electric performance.

He was sublime throughout the match as he was a constant threat to the Everton defence. The Frenchman worked hard off the ball and then had the quality to deliver end product when he had the ball at his feet in the opposition half, getting fans off their seats in anticipation whenever he had possession.

Defensively, he put a shift in. As per SofaScore, he won an impressive 14 duels, whilst also making one tackle and one interception. This shows that he did not shy away from physical battles and was able to win his fair share of them, stopping Everton from breaking down his side at times which offered protection to Matt Targett on his debut for the club.

However, his attacking play is where the magic came from. Via SofaScore, the gem completed a staggering ten of his 13 attempted dribbles. This shows that he was able to build excitement within the stadium as he was committing defenders and progressing up the pitch with the ball by using his dribbling ability.

He was also able to provide end product to go along with it as he ended the match with three key passes. The French forward also put in a deflected cross that resulted in Fraser’s goal, which did not go down as a chance created but could be classed as an assist due to the work he put in to work the opening.

This shows that he put in a sublime display against Frank Lampard’s Everton side and was a real menace for the Magpies. Hopefully, he will continue his fine form throughout the rest of the campaign and lead the side to safety.

Celtic: Frank McAvennie reacts to Ange Postecoglou’s touchline antics

Celtic pundit Frank McAvennie has been reacting to Ange Postecoglou’s antics in the dugout against Raith Rovers on the weekend, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Welsh gets an earful

The Hoops eventually eased to a 4-0 win over the Championship side in the Scottish Cup, however, Postecoglou was far from happy from what he saw from his side in the opening 45 minutes.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-21/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A slow passage of build-up play resulted in centre-back Stephen Welsh passing the ball back to Joe Hart, with Postecoglou going wild on the sideline.

His anger was picked up by microphones and is available to view here, with McAvennie hailing the Hoops boss for what he did.

The Latest: McAvennie’s comments

McAvennie, talking to Football Insider, revealed he was watching the game from home and labelled what he heard from Postecoglou at Parkhead as ‘incredible’.

“I was watching the game on TV because I couldn’t get to Celtic Park and I could hear someone shouting and bawling.

“I didn’t know where it was coming from. At one point the commentator apologised and said it was Ange.

“He was effing away and all sorts at the players, he was absolutely furious with them.

“It’s because the passes were going backwards and sideways then back to the goalkeeper.

“It sounded like he was livid. I mean, for me, that’s the big talking point, that’s incredible. That’s what I want from my manager.

“If you aren’t playing well enough, you will be told about it. Make no mistake.

“This isn’t a Premiership side we are playing and we had a decent team out.

“The performance needed to be better and Postecoglou made that very clear.

“I’m so glad he did it, as I said, wow, incredible. We haven’t had that for a long time.”

The Verdict: Spot on

Postecoglou’s passion is clear for all to see, and it’s brilliant that he is willing to go wild in the dugout with his side already in the lead against a lower league side.

The demands he puts on his players are high and ultimately, his rant at Welsh appeared to click Celtic into gear, proving his ultra competitive mentality is working on the squad.

They were much better in the second half, scoring three more times to extend their winning run after the winter break to eight games, and hopefully, that will be nine in a row following the Europa Conference League first leg against Bodo/Glimt this evening.

Pujara, Rahane power India A to important win

India A finally opened their account in the tri-series after two defeats with a comprehensive win against West Indies A at Grace Road

Cricinfo staff02-Jul-2010
ScorecardIndia A finally opened their account in the tri-series after two defeats with a comprehensive win against West Indies A at Grace Road. Cheteshwar Pujara led from the front yet again with an attacking century while Ajinkya Rahane smashed 90 to guide India to 340. The West Indians, save for Darren Bravo’s 83, couldn’t get enough big scores to mount that target and eventually fell 53 short in the high-scorer.The India openers, Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund, put them on the path to a big score with a stand of 95 in quick time. Dhawan hit ten boundaries as he raced to a half-century but he couldn’t convert his score as he fell in the 13th over to Andre Russell. Abhinav fell shortly after but from thereon, it was hard work for the West Indians as Rahane and Pujara added 151 for the third wicket. Gavin Tonge gave West Indies a long-awaited breakthrough when he bowled Rahane in the 41st over. Pujara reached his ton off just 83 balls and went on to score 114. All the West Indian seamers came in for punishment, with Russell and Lionel Baker taking two wickets apiece. The West Indies A top order also started briskly but lost three by the 13th over, with Dhawal Kulkarni accounting for two of them. Bravo resisted with an attacking knock and took charge of two half-century stands, adding 61 with Asad Fudadin and 71 with Russell. But India tightened their grip on the game when Bravo departed in the 38th over, bowled by Abhimanyu Mithun. Bravo’s 83 included eight fours and came off 108 balls. The lower order went on the attack but an Indian win was always inevitable.

E, claro, ganhando do arquirrival.

– Essa vitória contra o Mirassol nos dá confiança para a sequência da temporada. Respeitamos o Corinthians, que tem uma excelente equipe e é o atual campeão, mas estamos preparados e iremos em busca do nosso objetivo – declarou.

Stuart McKinstry can save Leeds millions

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa could find his new Samuel Saiz and save the club millions in the transfer window at the same time.

The Yorkshire outfit have long been on the lookout for a new midfielder, particularly of an attacking nature, having seen two bids rejected for RB Salzburg sensation Brenden Aaronson during the January transfer window.

Before him, it was Conor Gallagher in the summer and one-time Bayern Munich man Michael Cuisance.

There has been a creative void in Bielsa’s engine room for several seasons, aside from veteran Pablo Hernandez, the Whites have been missing a player of Saiz’s ilk for quite some time.

Well, in academy gem Stuart McKinstry, the Argentine may well have the answer and considering the Yorkshiremen couldn’t even land Aaronson for £20m, the young midfielder could save them millions of pounds in upcoming windows.

The 19-year-old maestro has already made his senior bow, coming on as a substitute during a Carabao Cup clash with Fulham in September this year, where he scored the winning penalty to see the Whites into the next round.

For the U23s, McKinstry has delivered three assists from 13 appearances, largely playing in four different roles across the heart of the pitch, via Transfermarkt.

Not only has he been dubbed the ‘next big thing’ to come out of Elland Road by the very reliable Phil Hay of The Athletic but his youth teammates have likened him to Lionel Messi, which only bolsters his creative and attacking credentials.

“He’s a very confident ball carrier, he’s physically strong, good upper body strength, excellent feet, good at beating his man and creative. In his head, he probably feels he can play in other positions up front as well,” claimed the journalist.

Meanwhile, the Scot’s former academy director at Motherwell – Steven Hammell – once lauded him as a “fabulous young player” who “will do wonderful things and become a household name in the next three or four years” to the Lanarkshire Live Sport Podcast.

So, on the above evidence, Bielsa could well discover his next Saiz-like playmaker and one that will save the club so much money in the future. He’s certainly an exciting prospect who deserves a chance given the lack of options and the ever-mounting injury list.
