Adaptability will be key in CLT20 – Kumble

Anil Kumble has said the speed at which teams adapt to the pitches in South Africa will be crucial to their success in the Champions League Twenty20

Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Anil Kumble wouldn’t say how much longer he intends to play in the IPL•Indian Premier League

Anil Kumble, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain, has said the speed at which teams adapt to the pitches in South Africa will be crucial to their success in a short tournament like the Champions League Twenty20. He also said it was too late to bring in Kevin Pietersen, who has no international commitments during the Champions League after being dropped from England’s limited-overs squads. The tournament will be played from September 10 to September 26 in South Africa. In most countries except England, the cricketing season usually kicks off in September or October, which means many sides will be rusty.”It is the first tournament for a lot of teams,” Kumble said after an interaction with more than 50 Bangalore fans on the eve of the team’s departure from India. “In South Africa, it is the beginning of the season and it is the first game of the season for some of the players in RCB as well. The biggest challenge is how quickly you acclimatise to the conditions and the need to start well in the tournament.”Bangalore reached the finals of the IPL in 2009, when it was held in South Africa, and the team’s coach and several players come from that country, giving them an advantage over other overseas teams. “We can take some confidence going to South Africa having done well there in IPL 2. Our coach Ray Jennings also understands the South African conditions well. With Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn around, those conditions should suit our bowling as well.”The team’s batting is bolstered by heavy-hitters such as Ross Taylor and Cameron White, but they will miss the services of World Twenty20 Man of the Series Pietersen, who was their big-ticket signing last year. “It’s a bit too late,” Kumble said. “We had to announce our squad about a month ago, which we did.”Most IPL players signed three year contracts in 2008 that come to an end after the Champions League. It has been nearly two years since Kumble, who will turn 40 in October, announced his international retirement and he was unwilling to commit on how much longer he would continue to play the IPL.”Once you retire, you have to take it one step at a time,” he said. “So you don’t plan and say that I am going to play for the next three years. Hopefully I will be in good shape for the six games this month and we come back victorious. That will be a great motivation to get into the next year. To think of the next year is very premature.”A week ahead of the Champions League, the cricketing headlines are dominated by the spot-fixing controversy in London. Kumble was confident the right steps would be taken to avoid such episodes during the tournament in South Africa. “Every tournament, every international match that happens is under a perceived threat,” he said. “I don’t think we need to be worried about these things but we can’t close our eyes. ACSU is there to deal with it.”

The one-year ban on Rana Naved-ul-Hasan was lifted on Saturday by the PCB, clearing the way for the fast bowler to be considered for national selection once again.Rana was one of seven players banned or fined earlier this year by the board following a disastrous tour to Australia; the other six have already had their punishments lifted or reduced on appeal – Mohammad Yousuf did not appeal but is back in the national fold – and this decision means that each one of the seven has now been pardoned. Rana and Younis Khan apart, the others have all played for Pakistan since.”Rana’s one-year ban has been lifted and his Rs 2 million fine has also been halved,” Taffazul Rizvi, the board’s legal advisor told ESPNcricinfo. The overturn came a day after Pakistan announced their Test squad for the South Africa series but Rana believes he still has a future with the national side. “Obviously this is a great relief for me as it’s been hanging over my career for a few months now,” Rana told ESPNcricinfo. “But I’m confident I can get back into the Pakistan side. I’m fit, I’m bowling well and I believe I can contribute.”Rana is scheduled to take part in the PCB’s Twenty20 domestic tournament for reigning champions Sialkot Stallions from Sunday. If he is not part of Pakistan’s winter plans, which include a tour to New Zealand, he will turn out for Tasmania in the Big Bash as he did last season.

Journalist drops key Wolves claim

Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes would be an excellent signing for Wolves, as well as a show of ambition, according to Midlands reporter Josh Holland.

The Lowdown: Nunes linked with Wolves move

Bruno Lage will be looking to bolster his options in the summer transfer window, ensuring his Wanderers side continue to head in the right direction next season.

One player Wolves have been linked with signing is Nunes, who is enjoying an impressive season for Sporting, starting 28 Primeira Liga games and chipping in with two goals and assists apiece.

The 23-year-old’s creative class has shone through in his central midfield role, with an 85.6% pass completion rate and an average of 2.4 dribbles per game.

The Latest: Journalist talks up signing

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Holland talked up the idea of Nunes joining Wolves in the summer, saying it would be a statement of intent:

“I think it shows ambition and the fans will love that Bruno Lage wants players like that.

“Depending on where they finish, they need to be looking at players that will want to come to Wolves and help them get into the Champions League rather than a player who wants them to be in the Champions League now.”

The Verdict: Neves replacement?

Nunes looks like a class act who could fit in seamlessly at Molineux, not least because of his Portuguese roots, and he is surely being viewed as a replacement for Ruben Neves.

The Wolves hero looks increasingly likely to move elsewhere at the end of the season and his compatriot could help the sizeable void left by him, considering he is not dissimilar in style, even hailed as ‘one of the best players in the world today’ by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

At 23, Nunes would be considered a long-term replacement who should improve further in the coming years, also making up for the loss of one of the club’s most influential players.

PCB may sue Arthur after fixing comments

The Pakistan Cricket Board is threatening to take legal action against Mickey Arthur, the former South Africa coach, after he suggested in a recent interview that a one-day series decider between the two countries in 2007 had been influenced by match-fixe

The Pakistan Cricket Board is threatening to take legal action against Mickey Arthur, the former South Africa coach, after he suggested in a recent interview that a one-day series decider between the two countries in 2007 had been influenced by match-fixers.Arthur, however, told ESPNcricinfo that his comments were taken out of context and blown out of proportion. “I have never seen or heard anything to do with match-fixing in my time,” he said. “I have been quoted as saying that I still think it was clean and have no proof whatsoever.”Pakistan cricket has been under the spotlight ever since the News of the World published allegations of spot-fixing during the Lord’s Test against England back in August, and three of its players, Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, are currently suspended from international cricket by the ICC.The latest allegation centres on the fifth ODI at Lahore in October 2007, which resulted in a 14-run win for South Africa – and a 3-2 series victory – after a dramatic Pakistan collapse. Chasing 234 to claim the series, Pakistan had at one stage been cruising on 198 for 4 with ten overs remaining, only for their last six wickets to tumble for 21 runs in 6.3 overs.”There was a strong suspicion of match-fixing and it took some of the gloss off the series win,” Arthur had told the South African website , ahead of the publication of his autobiography, in which the same claim is set to be made. “We did not have any proof, but when you have been involved in the game long enough, you know when something is not right. How else do you explain a batting side needing only 40 runs with seven [sic] wickets in hand, and then losing?”The PCB, which is seeking to restore its damaged reputation in the wake of the NOTW revelations, reacted strongly to Arthur’s comments, which coincided with the ongoing series between South Africa and Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.”PCB has noted with concern the statement of former South African Coach Mick[e]y Arthur insinuating that a one-day international match played at Lahore between Pakistan and South Africa in 2007 was fixed,” read a PCB statement. “PCB has decided to immediately serve a legal notice on Mick[e]y Arthur asking him to share with PCB any evidence in this regard. If the evidence is not provided PCB and Pakistani players reserve the right to initiate legal proceedings against Mick[e]y Arthur including but not limited to seeking unqualified apology, retraction and damages.””PCB reiterates that it has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption in cricket,” continued the statement, “and will deal with any news concerning Pakistani players with utmost importance and due care.”

Liverpool: Thiago outstanding vs Villarreal

Wednesday night saw Liverpool secure a comfortable 2-0 win in their first leg of this year’s Champions League semi-final against Villarreal.

Liverpool had a moment of luck for their first goal, which saw Jordan Henderson’s cross deflected by Villarreal left-back Pervis Estupinan – with goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli left with no chance in the 53rd minute of the game.

Jurgen Klopp’s side smelt blood and grabbed a second in the 55th minute of the game, courtesy of a well-worked goal that saw Mohamed Salah progress the ball and slide it through to Sadio Mane who brushed it past Rulli, with Villarreal thoroughly out-played.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Liverpool unsurprisingly dominated possession and picked away at Unai Emery’s side, though one player massively stood out besides goalscorer Mane and allowed them to tick over in midfield. That player was Thiago Alcantara.

The Spaniard registered the most touches with a whopping 119 and passed his way through Villarreal, with his class shining through in a game that saw him complete 99 passes from 103 attempts – leaving him with a mesmeric 96% pass accuracy.

Alcantara justified his 8.3 rating, courtesy of FotMob, and also played a key part defensively for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The 31-year-old registered five interceptions and issued ten recoveries in a performance that restricted The Yellow Submarine to just one off-target shot across the entire 90 minutes.

Liverpool were far too good. Mane may have grabbed the obvious plaudits for his impressive performance that saw him bag the second goal, and so too did Salah for his intricate assist for the second.

Though it was Thiago who acted as the metronome in the 2-0 win, oozing class and consistently penetrating the Villarreal block with his nine long balls that the Spaniard hit with, you guessed it, 100% accuracy.

It was a masterclass performance from Thiago, who will no doubt be a key figure for the Reds in the second leg.

Fast bowler Ruel Brathwaite has signed a two-year contract with Durham. Brathwaite, 25, had trialled with the Durham second XI earlier in 2010 before he was asked to join the main team for the final two weeks of the season.”I was delighted to be offered a contract with Durham after my initial spell with them,” Brathwaite said. “The boys really made me feel incredibly welcome while I was there and I can’t wait to join up with them in pre-season as we prepare for our 2011 campaign. I’m excited for the opportunity ahead and I’m looking forward to making my mark.”Brathwaite, 25, made his Durham debut in the club’s final County Championship match of the season against Somerset and had match-figures of 4 for 118. Hailing from Barbados, Brathwaite was Dulwich College’s first cricket scholar and has played first-class cricket for Loughborough University, Cambridge University and the MCC.”Ruel has a great attitude and real enthusiasm about the game which really fits well in our dressing room,” Geoff Cook, Durham’s head coach, said. “We’ll be working closely with him to finalise his status as English-qualified. We’re pleased that, despite offers from other counties, he decided to commit to Durham.”
