Australia mull Michael Hussey selection

Ricky Ponting has nominated David Hussey and Steven Smith as the men in danger of being axed from Australia’s side to squeeze Michael Hussey in

Ricky Ponting has nominated David Hussey and Steven Smith as the men in danger of being axed from Australia’s side to squeeze Michael Hussey in for Sunday’s match against Kenya. However, the Australians won’t be tempted to rest any of their best XI, with Ponting’s men desperate for action having been twiddling their thumbs during a two-week break since their last full game.Hussey has trained strongly since joining the squad in Bangalore as the replacement for Doug Bollinger, impressing the medical staff with how quickly he has recovered from surgery on his hamstring. The Australians will wait to see how Hussey handles Saturday’s training session before confirming him in the side, but Ponting said it would be a difficult call as to who would miss out.”It’s going to be a very tough decision, and one that up until a week ago we probably didn’t think we’d have to make,” Ponting said. “I’ve had a close look at [Mike] the last couple of days in training. He’s striking the ball really well. The physio forced him to do some quite intense running yesterday out on the ground. He got through that particularly well.”I think if you looked at two players that you’d have to single out who are in the same sort of position as Mike plays, it’s going to be unfortunately probably his brother or someone like Steven Smith. They’re the roles that Mike will come and play for us. We’ll have that sorted out by the morning.”The chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, was due to join the touring group on Saturday evening to replace David Boon as the selector on duty, and the Hussey decision is the only one likely to be required for this game. The backup players Callum Ferguson, Tim Paine and John Hastings will remain on the sidelines, but could come in to contention for Wednesday’s clash with Canada. The first-choice batsmen are in need of some valuable time in the middle, having not batted since the win over New Zealand in Nagpur on February 25. While sides like Sri Lanka and England have only one group match remaining, the Australians have three to play, and men like Ponting and Cameron White have spent hardly any time at the crease.”We won’t be resting,” Ponting said. “We’ve had enough rest over the last 16 days. We’ve had about one-third of a game in the last 16 days. We’ve trained really hard, we trained really well leading into the Sri Lanka game and this week since we’ve been here in Bangalore, we’ve trained particularly well again, so we’re really keen to get out there and play some cricket.”What it does do, it gives you a chance to prepare very well. We should be exceptionally well prepared for the next two games we’ve got coming up because we’ve had such a long break. It gives our players a chance to get over any little niggles they might have had from the previous games as well. We’re probably the only team in the tournament that will have a break that long. “The Australians have played Kenya twice before in World Cups, winning with relative ease on both occasions, and the Kenyan outfit of 2011 is notably weaker than their previous line-ups. But Ponting said there was no way his men would slip in to complacency against Kenya, whose only wins against Test nations since 2003 have come against Zimbabwe.”We won’t take any game lightly,” Ponting said. “We want to go out there and play the best cricket that we can. We know that we’ve got Kenya and Canada and then Pakistan just around the corner, then you’ve got quarter-finals and semi-finals. We haven’t played a great deal of cricket yet in the tournament, so it’s all about us getting our way right in the business end of the tournament, so that means that we go out tomorrow and play the best game of cricket that we possibly can.”

A ferocious 145 not out from captain Andrew Gale put Yorkshire firmly incontrol of their County Championship Division One clash with title-holdersNottinghamshire at Headingley. The visitors have been second-best on all fronts since winning the tosson the first morning, and had to fight hard to avoid a two-day defeat, eventually closing on175 for 6 – with 18 runs required to make Yorkshire bat again.Yorkshire began the second day on 213 for 5 with a lead of 70 but things didnot go entirely to plan early on. Gale completed a watchful half-century off 91balls but Adil Rashid added only a single to his overnight 39 before he playedround a ball from Samit Patel and was bowled.Richard Pyrah had his stumps hit by Luke Fletcher after one kept low but DavidWainwright gave valuable support to Gale as Notts began to feel the handicap ofbeing without Andre Adams, who did not take the field because of a groinstrain.Just as he was beginning to settle in, Wainwright drove a gentle return catchto Patel and in the following over Ryan Sidebottom was lbw to Paul Frankswithout scoring, leaving Yorkshire on 254 for 9.It looked as if Gale, on 67, would be denied his century, but he managed toplunder the bowling while last man Oliver Hannon-Dalby offered solid support.Every ball the number 11 kept out was loudly applauded by the home fans.Consecutive boundaries for Gale advanced him to 101 off 169 balls, with 13fours, at which stage Hannon-Dalby’s contribution to the 34-run stand was a meresingle. It was Gale’s first century since flogging an unbeaten 158 against thesame opponents at Trent Bridge towards the end of last season.Gale moved into hurricane mode as he planted consecutive balls from Fletcherhigh over mid-wicket for six and when lunch came at 334 for 9 he hadcontributed 76 from the previous 80 runs. That exceeded the previous best forYorkshire’s last wicket against Nottinghamshire at Headingley, 73 betweenWilfred Rhodes and Abe Waddington in 1920.Only two were added after the interval, however, before Hannon-Dalby was caughtat second slip by Adam Voges of Charlie Shreck, Gale receiving a standingovation for his unbeaten 145 from 205 balls with 15 fours and two sixes. It did not take long for Nottinghamshire’s top order to hit trouble again,Franks’ middle stump being struck so hard by Sidebottom that it had to bechanged. Mark Wagh’s off stump was flattened by Pyrah’s 10th delivery and in thenext over Patel bagged a pair when he was bowled by Sidebottom. At 38 for 3, a two-day finish looked on the cards but the visitors’ resolvewas stiffened by a 105-run stand between Alex Hales and Voges, during which theformer completed his second half-century of the match by driving Rashid overlong off for six.The fourth-wicket pair looked assured against both pace and spin but once againHales was to move into the 80s without reaching three figures. After making hisway to 83 off 112 balls, with 12 fours and a six, he stood no chance of keepingout a shooter from Pyrah which hit the base of his off-stump.Pyrah was once more fulfilling a vital role with the ball and he went on toremove Voges for 42 before being rested with figures of 15-8-19-3, Sidebottomreturning to deepen Nottinghamshire’s gloom by getting Alistair Brown caughtbehind.

No treinamento, Aguirre trabalhou jogadas ofensivas.

Durham storm to third win

Durham took only 56 minutes at New Road to mop up the four Worcestershire wickets which were needed to sign off their third win of the season in the County Championship

21-May-2011ScorecardDurham took only 56 minutes at New Road to mop up the four Worcestershire wickets which were needed to sign off their third win of the season in the County Championship. With Adrian Shankar not batting as he awaits a scan to determine the extent of a knee injury, the bottom-of-the-table home side were dismissed for 345 and duly slumped to a sixth consecutive defeat.Scott Borthwick snapped up the first two wickets in successive deliveries as Worcestershire went down by an innings and 25 runs.Still 99 behind when resuming at 271 for 5, they threatened to hold up Durham as Gareth Andrew took on Borthwick and pulled a short ball into the members’ car park in the second over of the final morning. The allrounder then went down the pitch to the young legspinner, driving hiseighth four over mid-on, but having completed his second half-century of the championship season he hoisted the next ball straight to Ben Stokes at deep midwicket.Borthwick then held a straightforward return catch from Damien Wright but Richard Jones safely blocked the hat-trick delivery. This was the only ball that Jones faced before he was run out by Stokes when Ben Scott refused a second run.Scott’s batting has been one of the few bright spots in two heavy defeats since joining Worcestershire on a month’s loan. The Middlesex wicketkeeper, who had a successful spell at New Road in the first half of last summer, shared in a stand of 74 in 21 overs with Andrew and went on to reach 50 after hitting seven fours in 78 balls.A nimble-footed batsman with a sound technique, he has scored at least 30 in each of his four Championship innings so far and his 73 here lifted his aggregate to 171 with only two dismissals. Steve Harmison’s reputation counted for nothing as last man Alan Richardsonsupported Scott in a stand of 54.The former England fast bowler may have needed a few overs to loosen up after his exertions in his first county match in over a month. In all he conceded 35 runs and was in his sixth over of the day when he secured his seventh wicket of the match. Scott was caught at third slip by Stokes, leaving Richardson unbeaten on 12 after pulling Callum Thorp for six.Worcestershire clearly face a difficult season but Durham are already in a position to launch a challenge for the title they won in 2008 and 2009.

Under-pressure PCB moves on Afridi situation

The PCB has cranked up the pressure in its dispute with Shahid Afridi by beginning formal disciplinary procedures against the former captain, even as political pressure is brought to bear on the board to resolve the dispute

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jun-2011

The PCB’s unusually detailed release, outlining the disciplinary procedure against Shahid Afridi, is indicative of the political pressure it is acting under•AFP

The PCB has cranked up the pressure in its dispute with Shahid Afridi by beginning formal disciplinary procedures against the former captain, even as political pressure is brought to bear on the board to resolve the dispute. The board has, as expected, set up a three-member disciplinary committee and directed Afridi to appear before it on June 8, at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The committee will be chaired by Sultan Rana, director of domestic cricket, and will include Shafiq Ahmed, general manager of domestic cricket, and Usman Wahla, manager of international cricket. Taffazul Rizvi, the board’s legal advisor, will assist the committee. An unusually detailed board press release on Thursday evening spelt out the formal process. A statement from a senior board official also sought to make clear precisely what the issue was, an indication of the fairly high stakes of a very high-profile dispute and the subsequent need to be as transparent as possible. The board said it had responded to Afridi’s defense, in which he had admitted to violating the PCB’s code of conduct by announcing his retirement to the media. “It is painful for us to get involved in a dispute with a cricketer who has been the national team captain until the West Indies series,” PCB COO Subhan Ahmed said in the release. “There are numerous contributions by Shahid Afridi to Pakistan cricket. But I think people need to understand that this is purely a disciplinary issue.”As the body managing cricket in the country we are duty-bound to maintain discipline at all levels. We will ensure that Shahid is given every opportunity to express and defend himself and as such the disciplinary process has been clearly spelt out to avoid any ambiguities”.This administration has sought at every opportunity to strangle what it sees as burgeoning player power; last year they banned or fined seven top players after the Australia tour. Two of them, Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, spent protracted periods out of the side thereafter. But Afridi is a different kettle of fish, not only because he was a captain with some positive results to show, but because of his immense popularity across most of the land; no other player in the side comes close. For this reason, the dispute has become politicised. The day began with Rehman Malik, the country’s interior minister, pledging to get involved in the matter, “I will do whatever I can to resolve this issue, as I am equally a fan of Afridi,” Malik tweeted. ESPNcricinfo understands that pressure has been put on the board from his side but that it has so far been resisted.Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, is also politically well-covered – he is appointed directly by the President of the country and board patron Asif Ali Zardari. But the board believes its case, in this matter, to be strong enough to not warrant political intervention from their side, for now at least. Malik has success in such matters in the past, having mediated a peace between former chairman Nasim Ashraf and Shoaib Akhtar in 2008.As part of the disciplinary proceedings, the committee will frame charges, record evidence and hear arguments before announcing its order. Afridi will be allowed to file an appeal against the order, through an appellate tribunal comprising an independent panel of arbitrators maintained by the PCB, and their ruling on the matter would be final. While announcing his ‘conditional’ retirement, Afridi lashed out at the current board and has brewed up a number of storms; he has hit out at former Test opener and current selector Mohammad Ilyas, as well as playing up the regionalism card by attacking a “Lahore lobby” behind his removal. In some reports he has also criticised Intikhab Alam, the team manager. These comments, it is understood, have hardened the board’s stance and resolve in ensuring the disciplinary process is followed through to a logical and legal end.The developments further reduce the chances of Afridi playing for Hampshire in the Friends Life t20; the PCB suspended Afridi’s contract, slapped him with a showcause notice, and revoked the No-Objection Certificate that would have allowed him to turn out for Hampshire. Afridi, keen to get the Hampshire situation resolved quickly, admitted to violating the code and stated his willingness to participate in further disciplinary action. Hampshire have urged the PCB to reconsider the withdrawal of the NOC, but at this stage it looks unlikely.

– Nosso objetivo é sempre conquistar a primeira posição. Continuamos invictos no torneio.
