Haddin forewarned of his omission

Brad Haddin knew for some time the Australian selectors preferred Matthew Wade as their first choice for the Gabba Test

Brad Haddin knew this was coming. Given the reputation for clear communication the national selection panel has developed among Australia’s players over the past year, how could he not?Though the national selector John Inverarity waited until the formal announcement of the team for the first Test of the home summer to confirm their decision to choose Matthew Wade as Australia’s wicketkeeper, Haddin had been aware for some time before which way the breeze was likely to blow. This was in keeping with the ways of Inverarity’s panel. Australia’s cricketers are now far better informed about where they stand, and the lack of irritation or frustration in Haddin’s voice on his return to Australia was proof of that.It helped that he had the Twenty20 Champions League trophy in tow, having demonstrated a hunger undiminished in taking the Sydney Sixers to the title. That desire will now carry Haddin into the domestic summer with New South Wales, where he will act as a mentor for the Blues while also remaining on call as Wade’s back-up.”In all honesty I think this decision was made a long time ago so I was pretty content where everything was at. I don’t think it was made overnight. I think this decision was made to go this direction a long time ago,” Haddin said. “I’d been around cricket long enough to know which direction things were going. My job is to get back to NSW and like everyone else enjoy Australia regaining the number one Test ranking in the world.”Now it’s just about going back and performing. I’m here if they need me, they know that. From that point of view its about performing for NSW. [Team performance manager] Pat Howard has been good through this whole process during the last six months. I’ve known exactly where I stand, from my point of view it’s just making sure my game keeps improving and going in the direction that it is at the moment.”Wade and Haddin have been frequent training partners over the past 18 months, and Haddin offered no ill will towards the younger man, who has surpassed him as Australia’s first choice gloveman in each of the three formats, one at a time.”He deserves his opportunity and he’s played well since he’s come into the Australian team,” Haddin said. “I wish all the boys luck. It’s going to be a massive series against South Africa. With a bit of luck the result at the end of it is number one in the world.”I get on well with most players I’ve played with so from that point of view Matt knows I’m there if he needs any advice. I’ve been watching his game over the last 12 months and he’s just going from strength to strength so from that point of view Australia are in safe hands.”Safe hands are what Haddin will now apply to NSW, helping the Blues go on from a promising start to the season before the CLT20 hiatus. After the travails in NSW last summer, Haddin’s consistent presence in the team will be a significant help to the captain Steve O’Keefe and a bevy of tyros.”You can see the way the Sixers performed over the last couple of weeks and during the Big Bash, you need that mix,” Haddin said. “We’ve got a group at the moment who needs that bit of leadership and a few older guys around.”One of Haddin’s most significant gains over the past six months has been the return of his best batting touch, resulting from adjustments he was able to make following the healing of an elbow injury that restricted him at times last summer.”I think my batting is back to where it was two years ago. I’ve ironed a few things out which I’m pretty happy with,” he said. “I’m enjoying my cricket at the moment. I’m actually enjoying being back playing. From that point of view life goes on … I just hope to continue to improve as a cricketer.”

Southee happy to hunt wickets with Boult

Tim Southee, after claiming 4 for 51 on the third day in Colombo, attributed his success to the others in the New Zealand pace attack, and in particular Trent Boult

Unlike Sri Lanka’s attack, New Zealand’s has supported their spearhead effectively at the P Sara Oval. Their spearhead, Tim Southee, has claimed another heavy haul in Colombo, after his four wickets in the first innings in Galle, and he has attributed this to the others in the attack. Southee had removed Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara on the second evening, and he dismissed Angelo Mathews and Tharanga Paranavitana the next day, claiming figures of 4 for 51.Southee said left-arm seamer Trent Boult had been especially helpful to his success in Sri Lanka. The bowlers not only complement each other by testing batsmen against different angles of attack, but also specialise in swinging the ball in opposite directions. Southee largely takes the ball away from the right-hand batsmen, while Boult moves it in.”Trent Boult has got a massive role to play in the wickets I’ve taken,” Southee said. “He’s helping out by putting pressure at the other end and I am sure his turn to take wickets is just around the corner. It’s tough conditions at the moment, but I’m going through a period where it’s coming out nicely.”New Zealand were only able to remove three batsmen in almost 70 overs on the third day, and despite having worked their way to the start of Sri Lanka’s tail, they were unable to dismiss the hosts for less than the follow-on mark. Thilan Samaraweera and Suraj Randiv resisted with an unbeaten stand of 97 towards the end of the day, but Southee’s efforts leave his team still in the hunt for a win as, having lost six wickets, Sri Lanka still trail by 187 runs.Southee said wickets in the first hour of the fourth day would be crucial to New Zealand’s hopes of levelling the series, particularly as the pitch offers little for bowlers once the ball gets old. New Zealand will begin the day with a ball that is only 4.2 overs old.”Massive hour tomorrow morning, if we can pick up a couple of wickets and run through them then who knows,” Southee said. “It’s definitely a new-ball wicket, and if you can grab a couple with the new ball, then it makes it easier to make inroads into the batting line-up. It’s not as easy when the ball gets older, and that can affect the team.”Southee said New Zealand weren’t displeased with their day’s work, given the number of good batsmen in Sri Lanka’s ranks. “It’s a tough batting line-up and there are some world class players here who have scored a lot of runs. They keep coming one after another and it just shows their great batting depth is. It would have been nice to have a couple of more [wickets] today to really get into their tail. Hopefully in the second innings, the spinners come to play.”

Mustard blitz not enough for Auckland

Phil Mustard’s 97 not out was not enough to see Auckland home against Wellington as his side fell 10 runs short at Eden Park.

Scorecard
Phil Mustard’s 97 not out was not enough to see Auckland home against Wellington as his side fell 10 runs short at Eden Park.Mustard, who played 10 ODIs for England, had said regaining his place in the England team was part of his motivation for a winter with Auckland and he showed his strokemaking and ability to accelerate in a 66-ball innings that contained six sixes and six fours.Mustard led from the front after Lou Vincent was run out by Grant Elliot to the first ball of the chase. He initially played carefully, taking 47 balls to reach his half-century before exploding with four sixes and two fours in 19 balls. But the blitz came too late as spells from Mark Houghton, fours overs for just 17, and Dimitri Mascarenhas – another to have played a handful of ODIs for England – left Auckland with too much to do in the second half of the chase.Jesse Ryder had helped post a target above nine-runs-an-over with three sixes in 60 from 37 balls. But the difference in the two innings was further contributions as Michael Papps made 38 in just 21 balls and wicketkeeper Luke Rhonchi 43 in 27 deliveries.

Former India allrounder Rusi Surti, 76, died this morning in Mumbai. The Queensland, Australia-based Surti had been put on life support in hospital after scans revealed he had suffered a massive stroke.Surti, often called the “poor man’s Garry Sobers”, played 26 Tests for India from 1960 to 1969 before settling in Australia. He represented Queensland 35 times in the Sheffield Shield and also played for Gujarat and Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy.A sound left-hand batsman, a left-arm bowler who could bowl either medium-pace or spin and an outstanding fielder, Surti rendered valuable service to Indian cricket almost throughout the 1960s.
