Forty year-old Murray Goodwin, the elder statesman of county cricket, notchedthe 69th first-class century of his career and his second for his new county asGlamorgan took a grip of Kent at Canterbury.Winless Kent now face a two-day battle to save themselves from an ignominious homedefeat after slumping to 73 for 4 in reply to Glamorgan’s battling 378. The eighth-placed hosts lost four wickets in the final 12 overs of day two before rain and bad light finally ended their agony. They now go into day three facing a deficit of 305.Without a win from their eight starts to date, Kent were guilty of tossing awaywickets on the same pitch that allowed Glamorgan’s middle order to flourishearlier in the day.Resuming on their overnight score of 155 for 4 after a rain-ruined openingday of 55 overs, Glamorgan lost Jim Allenby in the fifth over of theday after nicking a Charlie Shreck delivery to the wicketkeeper.Former Zimbabwe Test batsman Goodwin combined with his skipper Mark Wallace toadd 105 for the sixth wicket in 33.2 overs. The stand finally came to an end when Mitch Claydon, on loan from Durham, bounced Wallace – who hooked instinctively only to pick out Ben Harmison at deep midwicket to make it 273 for 6.Goodwin cruised to a 190-ball century with 14 fours and looked to kick on intandem with Graham Wagg, but Wagg miscued anattempted drive against Claydon to be caught at short cover by a divingHarmison. Goodwin followed soon after for 136, driving on the up and was caught at cover to bring in last man Michael Reed.In his 11-match first-class career thus far Reed had mustered only 38 runs, yetagainst a tired Kent attack he cantered to a career-best 27 before Claydonfinally snared him leg before to end the innings soon after 5pm.In fading light and with the floodlights on, Kent made a crisp start only tolose their way once opener Sam Northeast steered a delivery off the fullface of the bat to second slip against Wagg. Daniel Bell-Drummond chipped a full ball from Reed into the hands of BenWright at square leg then Rob Key fell in near identical fashion to thebowling of Michael Hogan.Kent’s miserable hour concluded when Brendan Nash nicked a defensivepush against Hogan through to the keeper to slope off with his side on 65 for4.Rain arrived soon after and despite an attempt to restart the game at 6.30pm,umpires Steve Garratt and Neil Mallender were forced to abandon play for theday.

Existe a ansiedade. A expectativa é sempre a melhor possível.

Rashid realises all-round ability

On another truncated day that saw 36.4 overs lost to rain and gloom, Andrew Gale and Adil Rashid did their best to light up proceedings with an impressive stand of 109 to move the game along in Yorkshire’s favour.

On another truncated day that saw 36.4 overs lost to rain and gloom, Andrew Gale and Adil Rashid did their best to light up proceedings with an impressive stand of 109 to move the game along in Yorkshire’s favour. After waiting two years for a hundred, it seemed fitting the Yorkshire captain would bring up his second in the hyperbolic city of multiple buses.Within 91 minutes of coming together, the pair had already put on 102 runs (roughly equating to 204 runs in one session) which leaves Yorkshire the more comfortable of the two sides going into the final two days.Rashid has been enjoying an exceptional run of form since coming in to the side after injury to his good friend Azeem Rafiq. He was fortuitous today when, without a run to his name, Neil Dexter put him down at slip – his third drop in two games at this position – but he continued on with some exceptional shots. He drove Tim Murtagh down the ground twice with great aplomb, before his wrists did the talking with a flick through midwicket that was timed to perfection. If the on drive is a sign of a high class batsman, the flick through midwicket is the neon beacon of an in-form one.”I’ve always had good wrists,” Rashid tells ESPNcricinfo. It’s an Asian thing, he tells us – and we’re inclined to agree – but it is something he has had to actively work at curbing to excel.”I think before I relied on them a bit too much to score my runs. I certainly used to throw my hands at wide deliveries quite a lot and look for shots that weren’t really there. But I can’t be looking to flick the ball from outside off stump as I used to because of the wickets. Thinking like a top level batsman, you’ve got to play much straighter. Only when you’re in and you get the right width or length can you resort to your instincts.”Work has been done to turn this talented legspinner into the fully fledged allrounder that those that have worked with Rashid from school to the international setup know him to be. A taste of international cricket as jet-setting drinks carrier and then, belatedly, a limited overs player whetted the appetite but left more confusion than a greater sense of worth: “You’re around the team, then you’re in, then you’re out – it’s not the easiest thing to deal with when you’re 21, you know?”But a winter of focus and a heightened sense of responsibility has abetted more relaxed mind-set for Rashid.”Before I was quite tense because I didn’t really have a routine,” Rashid explained. “Previous seasons I would have batted at No. 7, 8 or even further down and probably obsessed more over my batting if I had a few bad knocks. Now I’m going in as a proper batsmen and it makes you approach things differently.”Such an approach was evident when Rashid returned from lunch and, essentially, sacrificed himself in pursuit of a fourth batting point in the 110th over. But his dismissal handed Middlesex a third point for their bowling exploits. Richard Pyrah went later that over and Andrew Hodd followed soon after, as four middle order wickets fell for just 32 runs.Despite the bad light and rain, the game has progressed thanks to a jam packed opening session. Overnight centurion Alex Lees went for the first ball of the day when he pushed at a delivery from James Harris, who had spent the majority of day one nursing a side strain in the outfield. The decision to keep him on the field to recover was vindicated – any time off would have to be made up in full on his return – as he took three wickets to help see off Yorkshire’s middle order. But the rate at which the visitors scored runs has pushed them ahead in this match and much of the credit belongs to Andrew Gale and Adil Rashid. Yorkshire’s collapse was clumsy, but they will just about get away with it.

Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies captain, has been suspended for one match after being fined a second time within 12 months for maintaining a slow over-rate. He will miss the crucial tri-series match against Sri Lanka on Sunday.West Indies were ruled one over short of the target at the end of match against India in Port-of-Spain for which the match referee, Jeff Crowe, fined Bravo 20% of his match fee and his team members, 10% of their match fees.”The captains were informed of their respective positions relating to over-rate breaches before the start of the series,” Crowe said. “On Friday, the umpires had kept Dwayne [Bravo] informed throughout the innings about the position regarding over-rates, and more so when his side fell behind.”The charge was laid by on-field umpires Nigel Llong and Peter Nero, as well as third umpire Nigel Duguid and fourth umpire Joel Wilson, with Bravo pleading guilty. It was the second such offence for Bravo after he was fined for a slow over-rate during the Champions Trophy match against South Africa on June 14.Virat Kohli was also slapped with a similar fine after India’s match against Sri Lanka in Kingston.

Taylor runs more valuable than Cowan's

Ed Cowan and James Taylor both enjoyed plenty of time in the middle on the final day in Hove, but only one of them has any real chance of playing in the third Test

Ed Cowan and James Taylor both enjoyed plenty of time in the middle on the final day in Hove, but only one of them has any real chance of playing in the third Test at Old Trafford next week. Taylor’s unbeaten 121, scratchy though it was through its early stages, will give him some confidence as he travels to Manchester, where his fate will rest on the fitness of Kevin Pietersen. Cowan’s 77 not out, compiled with the help of some buffet bowling late in the afternoon, will boost his tour tally but won’t earn him a Test recall. As Australia’s three-day game against Sussex petered out to its inevitable draw, Cowan and Matthew Wade (30 not out) put on an unbeaten 61-run partnership before the players shook hands and play was called off at 5.20pm, the earliest possible stumps time. Cowan might have wanted to push on in pursuit of his first century in a first-class match since November but this game wasn’t about personal milestones so much as preparing players for Test battle. In that regard, it was Usman Khawaja and Phillip Hughes who most wanted a decent hit during Australia’s second innings, although Hughes had already made 84 on the first day. Alas, Khawaja edged to slip for 1 having been promoted to open and Hughes struck 38 during an innings that included a blow to the back of the helmet from Chris Jordan before it ended with a shuffle across the stumps to be lbw to Lewis Hatchett.Cowan brought up his second half-century of the match from his 73rd delivery with a cut for four off Monty Panesar and both he and Wade cleared the short boundary late in the afternoon as Rory Hamilton-Brown served up some full tosses. Cowan struck two sixes, as many has he has during his Test career, but it was the first-innings centurion Steven Smith who gained the most with the bat from this match for the Australians.Earlier, Sussex ended their innings at 368 for 7 after completing 100 overs, the maximum allowed for each team’s first innings under the agreed conditions of this game. Taylor had gone to lunch on 112 and added nine to his total after the break, as Australia’s ring-in player and first-class debutant Ashton Turner leaked a few boundaries during his maiden spell at this level.Taylor might not yet play in the Old Trafford Test but his innings was a timely way to celebrate his England call-up. Taylor brought up his hundred shortly before lunch with a cover-driven boundary off Nathan Lyon from his 233rd delivery, and it capped off a solid morning for his temporary team, as Sussex added 123 to their overnight total in the first session for the loss of two wickets. After the second day’s play, Jackson Bird described Taylor’s innings in underwhelming terms, declaring that although he had batted “quite well” he was “a bit scratchy at times” and had edged a number of deliveries through or wide of the cordon. That was a fair assessment at the time but Taylor looked more comfortable on the third day, especially when driving against the spin of Lyon and Ashton Agar.He also cut Lyon for an attractive boundary but was fortunate to reach his hundred after he lofted Lyon high over his head and was put down by Agar, who was running back with the flight of the ball from mid-on. It was one of two chances put down by the Australians on the third day – Smith’s difficult time in the slips continued when he missed an edge from Callum Jackson off the bowling of Agar.Jackson provided support for Taylor during a 55-run partnership but after he lofted Lyon over long-on for six, he fell next delivery when he played back and was lbw for 26. Lyon finished with 1 for 99 from 26 overs and while his bowling was not poor – he got some dip and turn at times – nor was it often threatening enough to worry the batsmen. He was far from alone on the third day, though, as none of Australia’s attack looked consistently dangerous.Mitchell Starc picked up the other wicket of the morning when he came around the wicket to Jordan (47) and knocked his leg stump out of the ground with a fullish delivery. However, Starc and James Faulkner both had trouble finding consistent lines, as they had on the second day. Bird beat the bat a few times and drew an edge from Jordan that narrowly evaded Khawaja at gully, but was unable to add to the two wickets he claimed on Saturday.
