Graham Ford has agreed to become head coach at Surrey after his contract with Sri Lanka expires in January. He has signed a three-year contract with the county.Ford had been linked to the vacant position at The Oval since July when Chris Adams was sacked. He had been informally approached by Surrey while coaching Sri Lanka at the Champions Trophy, but Ford said the deal had only firmed up in the past few weeks. He cited “family commitments” as the chief reason for refusing a renewal of his contract with Sri Lanka.”I had already decided that I was leaving before Surrey even advertised the position, so it took a bit of time,” Ford said. “From a family point of view it works a lot better, in terms of all the time away from family that I currently have to go through.”Ford has a strong relationship with Surrey cricketer Kevin Pietersen, having known him since Pietersen’s time at High School in Durban. He had also been the man Pietersen endorsed for the England head coach role, after Pietersen’s turmoil with Peter Moores ended with Moores’ sacking in 2009.Ford’s move to Surrey will strengthen the South African connection at the county, where Graeme Smith is captain, but Ford suggested his relationships with players at Surrey did not necessarily spur him to take the job.”I haven’t coached any of their players, really,” he said. “I think Pietersen plays about one game a year for them, if that, so he’s not really part of it. But I have worked with Graeme Smith briefly, as he was just coming into the South African national side.”0:00

But Surrey chief executive Richard Gould had told that Pietersen’s links with Ford had played a role in the team’s choice of coach, as had Ford’s extensive coaching experience. Ford coached South Africa for three years after the 1999 World Cup, and has also coached Kent, in addition to his two years with Sri Lanka.”There were some discussions with KP and Graham came very highly recommended from many quarters,” Gould said. “When we spoke to him he was an impressive guy and ambitious.”We were looking for somebody with county experience and preferably international experience as well. We also wanted somebody who has a good track record in delivering improvement to players and the team with a good hard working ethic who will be a help to take the club forward.”Ford will be tasked with arresting a two-year slide at the county, which ended with Surrey being relegated to the Division Two of the County Championship this year. He performed a similar role with Sri Lanka, who won their first Test series since Muttiah Muralitharan retired under Ford, though they were also whitewashed 3-0 in Australia during his tenure.”It is in part a rebuilding job but we have a lot of good youngsters and senior players,” Gould said. “It is about getting the most out of them as individuals and as a group.”Sri Lanka Cricket had been desperate to keep Ford, even asking him to reconsider his decision to leave, after he had initially informed them of his plans. Chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya, in particular, has been a vocal supporter of Ford since his time with the Natal side that Ford coached. He had taken the job after Geoff Marsh was sacked in January 2012.

MS Dhoni and his team arrived in Johannesburg this morning to cloudy skies and cold shoulders. But they don’t know too much about the latter. At least, not yet.Matters seemed routine when Dhoni and his delegation got into the team bus, drove to the hotel in Sandton where they will spend most of their time on this tour, given that Durban is the only other city they will see, and the captain readied himself for his first media engagement. The number of South African reporters outnumbered their Indian counterparts and they had more than just the cricket on their minds.The second question – the first was an almost mandatory one about how the Indian squad is coping with the absence of Sachin Tendulkar – was whether Dhoni was aware of the anger surrounding the tour. Dhoni smiled his signature smile. If people were upset with him, he seemed to be saying, he would meet that with pleasantries.”We can arrange a match for the administrators and let them go at it,” he suggested. There was laughter all around. “The relationship between the Indian and South African teams has been good. Though we’ve seen a bit of chirping going around, it makes cricket interesting. The guys have not become too personal, which means we will have a good series.”Although the Sreesanth-Graeme Smith incident from three years ago goes against the good-natured sportsmanship Dhoni made reference to, no-one was talking about that. What is in our hands is three ODIs and two Tests, so we will look to make the most of it and move on to the next series.”If pure cricket is all that concerns Dhoni then he will be relishing the prospect of playing a South African ODI team that is still grappling to get its batting combinations right. India have been a force in the 50-overs version, led by explosive hitting, and Dhoni expects more of the same starting on Thursday. “If you love the ball coming on to the bat, that’s what you will see,” he said.He admitted to not having watched much of the recently-concluded series between Pakistan and South Africa but said he would not judge it on the scorelines alone. He expects heated competition and a stern test of India’s skills, which Duncan Fletcher believes are ready for the challenge of South African surfaces.”The way the guys have played recently, they’ve got a lot of confidence,” Fletcher said. “We were facing Australia the other day and Mitchell Johnson was getting up to 151kmph. Our top four was handling it quite well. Our batting seems technically equipped. The only thing is the experience. But this lot is confident, they’ve got no baggage and they really believe in themselves.”Although India are touring with one of their least experienced squads, Fletcher also think they have prepared sufficiently. Six members of the current ODI squad toured South Africa in August to play first-class and List A matches. Memorably, Shikhar Dhawan scored 248 in one of the limited-overs matches. The surfaces were flat, winter pitches, though, and will likely not resemble anything India will play on in this series but Fletcher thinks the trip still had value for the players.”To come out here and play in South Africa against this opposition, the players get a feel for the way they play cricket here,” he said. “Psychologically it’s quite an advantage.” Given that mind games are going to play a significant role in the series – be it against South African team or their public – mental strength is one thing India will need on this tour.

The ICC will be trialing the use of the Officiating Replay Systerm during the last ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi and the first Test

The ICC will be trialling the use of the Officiating Replay System (ORS) during the final ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi today, as well as during the first Test between the two at the same venue next week, the has reported.The system was trialled during the Ashes in England earlier this year, where Nigel Llong sat in a separate broadcast truck and effectively mirrored the role of the third umpire Kumar Dharmasena during the third Test at Old Trafford. Llong didn’t have the authority to adjudicate but had more control over replays.For the ongoing series, Richard Kettleborough is expected to sit in a separate room containing a giant monitor with many camera angles available, giving him the option to choose which replay he wants to see, including Hawk-Eye.The ORS is a key experiment in the ICC’s continuing bid to improve the Decision Review System (DRS). Though the DRS is used in most international matches barring those involving India, its usage, implementation and efficiency continues to be debated. The ORS aims to iron out one key drawback in the current system, by allowing TV umpires to have control of the replays they can see, an improvement over the current scenario where they depend on replays provided by the broadcasters.At the time of its first trial in August, the role was effectively seen as one that combined that of a third umpire and TV broadcast director. Kettleborough, however, will have no impact on the decisions in the matches itself, as Richard Illingworth is the official TV umpire for the ODI.The ICC is hoping to factor in the feedback by Kettleborough and Llong, as it tries to strengthen the case for universal implementation, in some form, of the DRS.It is also believed that giving the umpire greater control over replays will eliminate possible broadcast biases, thereby easing the concerns of boards, particularly the BCCI. One of the other aims of the ICC from this trial is to speed up the process of DRS, which is one of the most common criticisms of the system.
