Johnson surges to Border Medal

Mitchell Johnson was awarded the Allan Border Medal for his string of powerful performances during the home Ashes, while Meg Lanning was handed the Belinda Clarke Medal

Daniel Brettig20-Jan-20140:00

‘I didn’t expect to win tonight’ – Johnson

Mitchell Johnson swooped on the Allan Border Medal almost as dramatically as he laid waste to England this summer, surging to win Australian cricket’s highest honour through a string of shattering performances during the home Ashes sweep that ended a previously traumatic 2013 on the most triumphant note possible.Having sat out of Australia’s Test team for most of the year, even being suspended alongside Shane Watson, James Pattinson and Usman Khawaja during the hellish Test tour of India, Johnson’s upward trend of influence reached a crescendo in the home Tests. Those performances took Johnson past the captain Michael Clarke, who had been widely expected to claim his fifth Border Medal and third in a row.Instead, Clarke had to be content with the Test Player of the Year award, won from the highly promising Steve Smith. But he did not seem to mind handing over the garlands to Johnson, the fast bowler who added rare venom to the bowling attack and gave Australia the kind of firepower that has characterised so many victorious teams in the past.”It has been an amazing journey,” Johnson said. “Coming back from injury and having a lot of doubters out there, but I knew in my own heart if I got another chance I could make the most of it. It’s very emotional for me to be standing up here.”Mitchell Johnson’s 37 wickets during the Ashes paved the way for Australia’s 5-0 whitewash of England•Getty Images

The result rather summed up a year in which the team explored subterranean depths in India and England before gathering themselves under the new coach Darren Lehmann and slowly establishing a way forward. Johnson showed himself to be ready for further Test combat with limited overs spells in England and ODI matches in India, before crashing through Alastair Cook’s tourists at the Gabba and beyond.Johnson’s emergence in time for the Ashes in Australia, and the desperately poor displays by the Test team up to that point, can be highlighted by the fact that entering the five Tests against England at home, Clarke led the Border Medal standings from George Bailey, who at that point, for all his limited overs skill and poise, had not even made his five-day debut. Votes for the Medal are weighted heavily towards Test matches.Bailey, who has had to deal with the loss of his Test spot for the forthcoming tour of South Africa, had the consolation of claiming the ODI player of the year award, a fitting recognition of his consistency across series against the West Indies, England and India before stumbling as a Test batsman in the Ashes.”It’s been incredible,” Bailey said of his year. “It’s disappointing not to be going to South Africa and I think I have come to terms with that. If you are going to play five Tests over a summer you would pick the five we played, it’s been extraordinary.”Aaron Finch was handed the award for Twenty20 player of the year, largely on the strength of his stunning 156 from 63 balls against England at Southampton. That world record innings not only made Finch a worldwide T20 name but also helped launch an increasingly successful limited overs career that has him in poll position to open the batting alongside David Warner at next year’s 50-over World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.Meg Lanning, meanwhile, was handed the Belinda Clarke Medal, awarded to the pre-eminent women’s cricketer in the land. Lanning’s Clark Medal was a reward for consistency, her run of scores across three formats in an Ashes year sneaking her ahead of Erin Osborne in the voting of her peers and the media. Lanning was particularly effective in England, top scoring for the Southern Stars no fewer than three times.

Anderson, desta vez, deve ficar fora devido a dores no tornozelo direito. Assim como Pato, ele não deu as caras no gramado nesta semana. Arboleda, com um estiramento na coxa esquerda, também desfalca o Tricolor.

– O Walce vai jogar. Entrou bem no jogo.

Uncapped O'Donnell makes opportunity count

Robert O’Donnell, the New Zealand XI batsman said that he was disappointed to not convert his score into a century, but was delighted to come good against a Test-level attack

Robert O’Donnell will be leading New Zealand in the Under-19 World Cup later this month, taking along with him a bragging right that few others of his age will be able to match. Opening the innings for New Zealand XI in Whangarei, he made 80 against an Indian attack that read Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, R Ashwin and Ishwar Pandey. He had “tears of joy” when he got the call-up, and made sure to make it count.O’Donnell was disappointed he could not make it to three figures, but was delighted to have come good against a Test-level attack, although he admitted the Cobham Oval pitch was “flat as day”. “It’s a very disappointing way to finish off,” O’Donnell said. “It would have been amazing to have a hundred against an Indian Test team, everybody sort of dreams about that stuff. Unfortunately not today but hopefully, I will get another chance in the future someday.”He spoke confidently, outlining the challenges the Indian bowlers presented, especially Ashwin. “Ashwin bowled extremely well today,” he said, calling the Indian spinners “very wise”. “He only bowled a handful of overs but he knew exactly what he was doing with the ball. In terms of a wicket that bounced, Ashwin bowled a lot of topspinners which is actually a lot harder to get down the wicket to because it bounced and with the short-leg, you don’t want to go too square.”O’Donnell said Pandey bowled well to the left-handers, and Zaheer to the left-right combination.”I didn’t actually get to face Pandey but he bowled very well to the left-handers. He looked a very handy, steady bowler. In terms of pace, I think Yadav just hurried us up a little bit and that’s why he got a wicket with the short ball and swung the ball early. Ishant also bounced the ball which is what he is going to do.”Zaheer bowled very well to the left-right combination. Obviously, he moves the ball both ways. He had a very good mindset in terms of bowling to the left-hander, which sort of set him up, in and out. We always knew that he was going to be smart in what he did, he is not obviously a young campaigner. We just looked to try and play him as straight as possible, try and leave well. George Worker left very well early in his innings which actually made Zaheer bowl just a little bit tighter and allowed us to get ones on the leg side.”O’Donnell pulled superbly through his innings and said it was a stroke he had grown up playing, but added that the home batsmen would have been better off playing straight than square. “Sometimes it’s almost just instinct. Sometimes it is your downfall in terms of falling into traps and stuff like that,” he said. “On a nice wicket where it came on today, it’s nice to pull on those sorts of wickets but on slower, lower wickets, it is a lot harder when the ball sits up. On a wicket like today, it sort of came naturally.””On a pitch like this which is not really subcontinent-like, playing the pace bowlers is about getting behind the line of the ball and playing them nice and straight, which is a big talking point really rather than looking to go square, which is how at the end of the day most of our boys got out, including myself. As soon as you start looking to play them down the ground, you give yourself a better option. The wicket is flat as day, so tomorrow could be a bit frightening with this Indian batting line-up coming up.”Although he could not convert his innings into a hundred, O’Donnell was glad to have got as many as he did against this attack ahead of the Under-19 World Cup. “Every opportunity we get out here is just going to be an absolutely learning curve for us,” he said. “There are a few of the Under-19 boys that are taking part here.””At least you have got runs under your belt, you don’t have to go back and think, am I doing something wrong technically or stuff like that. When you are not doing well in cricket, it is actually tough to do.”You need to forget about the technical side and just move on with the mental side of it. Obviously it’s lovely, but things are going to change over there. We can’t take it for granted. It is going to be lower, slower, and a lot hotter.”

Tourists confront fortress Centurion

As Australia’s touring party wrestled with the changes to be forced by Shane Watson’s absence from the Test team, they also had cause to glance furtively at another obstacle looming in the distance

Daniel Brettig09-Feb-2014

South Africa’s quicks at Centurion

Dale Steyn, 6 Tests, 36 wickets at 17.61

Morne Morkel, 4 Tests, 17 wickets at 23.41

Vernon Philander, 2 Tests, 12 wickets at 13.66

As Australia’s touring party wrestled with the changes to be forced by Shane Watson’s absence from the Test team, they also had cause to glance furtively at another obstacle looming in the distance. To win a three-match series, a strong result in the first encounter is close to non-negotiable, and over two decades the task of doing so against South Africa at SuperSport Park has proven near enough to impossible. In 18 Tests since its debut in a draw with England in 1995, Centurion has witnessed 14 victories for the hosts, three draws and only one defeat, to Nasser Hussain’s tourists in 2000. That this lone loss was a result contrived by Hansie Cronje for reasons other than “making a game of it” says much for how strong South Africa’s hold has been, bearing comparison with Australia’s supreme record at the Gabba over the same period.Much like Brisbane’s tendency to catch under-prepared touring teams on a surface offering pace, bounce and movement to Australia’s fast men, Centurion has been characterised by the dominance of South Africa’s quicks in the rarefied air of the Highveld. Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander would not choose to bowl anywhere else. There are few happy memories for Australia, either. The one Test match they have played at the ground was a dead rubber in 1997, after Mark Taylor’s team had won by a wide margin in Johannesburg and a breathlessly narrow one in Port Elizabeth. Allan Donald and Brett Schulz dominated, Australia’s batsmen wilted, and Ian Healy was suspended for throwing his bat in reaction to a questionable caught behind dismissal. On a tour where Michael Clarke’s team has already coped with plenty of adversity, whether it be through injury or poor weather, the challenge of overturning the hosts on their happiest of hunting grounds will be a tall one. The opening batsman Chris Rogers, likely to bear the brunt of South Africa’s pace barrage, has taken note of the ground’s history, but also of his team’s buoyant mood.”We haven’t really focused on that particular arena, but we’ve spoken about other things and we’ve still got a couple of meetings to go. So I’m sure we’ll talk about that,” he said. “I’ve heard these things as well, it will be a big challenge no doubt but one that I think we are ready for.”Something we’ve really spoken about this whole trip so far – we’ve been flooded out of one place and conditions have been a bit difficult in others. But we’ve kept talking about how we’ve got to make the most of every opportunity and I think we are. And we’re still enjoying it, the guys are still having a laugh and having fun so I think that’s going to count.”Any residual feelings of comfort left by his strong conclusion to the Ashes have been kicked out of Rogers by a succession of white-knuckle net sessions. His chest guard has received a considerable pummelling, and first ball in centre-wicket practice at the Wanderers on Saturday a Mitchell Johnson throat ball singed the grille of his helmet.”That was tough, hopefully it doesn’t come any tougher than that, because if it does I’m in trouble,” Rogers said with a rueful grin. “But it was a good challenge and sometimes you get a bit worried that one’s going to kick at you or something like that, but that’s part of the challenge as well, and then you can be happy for the rest of the session.”I know their attack is going to come hard as well, so I’m expecting plenty of short balls and good pace and good swing as well. There’s been some late swing and that’s going to make it interesting. I think both batting sides are going to have their work cut out for them but that’s part and parcel of Test cricket. Whoever bats the best is going to be in line to win this Test.”To this end the loss of Watson, a batsman capable of dominating the best attacks when he does not allow his front pad to become too prominent, will be felt most keenly. He had been slated to move down the order to No. 6, and his likely replacement would appear to be Phillip Hughes. The inclusion of Hughes and the No. 3-elect Alex Doolan will make for a batting line-up markedly different from the one that stuttered against England.Moises Henriques and a fresh-off-the-plane Shaun Marsh are the other options for Darren Lehmann and John Inverarity to consider, but neither has been exposed to the best of Australia’s bowling in training quite so much as Doolan or Hughes. It would be a considerable departure from early tour planning were either to play, but then Watson has already forced one by his unavailability.”That throws a bit of a spanner in the works for us, he’s been an important player in our side of late, so that’s going to cause a few changes but we have to adapt,” Rogers said. “Obviously his batting is important to us, but then he can give us a few overs and he catches them at first slip. So that means he’s an integral part of our side.”These things happen and you have to move on quickly, so bad luck to Shane, but whoever comes in hopefully they can do a good job. I think we have good momentum, there’s a good feeling among the group and that’s going to be important going into this Test. The loss of Shane is going to hurt but I still think there’s enough quality in the rest of the side to really perform in this first Test.”
