‘We want to be No.1 in all formats’ – Smith

One of the more revealing Australian cricket interviews of the past week occurred on Melbourne radio rather than in New Zealand, and featured not a member of the Test squad but a limited-overs specialist. It was John Hastings, one-time Test cricketer and some-time ODI and T20 player whose early career was played under Michael Clarke, and who is now enjoying a renaissance under Steven Smith.At 30, Hastings has plenty of experience at all levels and is regarded as a clever thinker about the game, particularly his detailed plans for opposing batsmen. So it was fascinating to hear his response when asked about the culture in the side under Smith, and the relaxed atmosphere that Smith and coach Darren Lehmann had fostered over the past six months. Hastings, recently returned from the Chappell-Hadlee Series, was effusive in his praise.”Not to take anything away from the boys when I played back whenever it was… It’s just different,” Hastings said on radio. “I don’t know whether it’s because I was younger, I was a bit more afraid to speak up and speak my mind. Darren Lehmann and Steve Smith have created an environment where everyone is equal, honesty is the key and communication is the key.”When you have those key factors in your side, it just breeds a really good culture and environment. For me it’s brilliant. I can just go in and be yourself, no question is too dumb. If you think you’ve seen something on the field you bring it up, people don’t shoot you down. It’s just a really good environment.”Hastings also noted that the age of Smith’s players helped the gelling process, for many had come up through age-group cricket together or knew each other from the Centre of Excellence. It should also be noted that Hastings was not critical of past captains, but rather he observed that the culture was different when “big personalities” such as Clarke, Ricky Ponting, Brett Lee and Michael Hussey were present.Nobody could argue Smith’s team is completely devoid of “big personalities” – David Warner’s name comes immediately to mind. But there is also plenty of understated excellence: think Adam Voges, Nathan Lyon, Peter Nevill, Josh Hazlewood, among others. Whatever the cause, in the six months since Clarke led a series of post-Ashes retirements, Australia have not lost a Test match.”We’re very relaxed and trying to improve every day,” Smith said. “I think that’s really important for this group, to try and make sure we’re trying to get better each day and able to adapt to everywhere we go around the world. I think the environment is a good place to be at the moment, where we’re gelling well as a group and everyone is playing for the right reasons.”Remarkably, Smith is yet to taste defeat as a Test captain, having won six and drawn four matches as captain since he first stood in for Clarke in a temporary capacity in the 2014-15 home summer against India. They may not yet have been tested to their maximum – West Indies were weak opponents and New Zealand have underwhelmed – but they have done enough to be within striking distance of the No.1 Test ranking.All they have to do is avoid defeat over the next five days in Christchurch. Any sort of series win in New Zealand would be enough for Australia to take the top spot from India, which would be a remarkable achievement given they have lost Clarke, Mitchell Johnson, Chris Rogers, Brad Haddin, Shane Watson and Ryan Harris to retirement in the past year.”We want to be No.1 in the world in every format of the game and if we win this week we’ll be No.1 in two of those formats,” Smith said. “For us we do want to win away from home as well. That’s massive on my agenda and the guys’ agenda and I thought we played really well in the first Test match to adapt to the conditions and I think it’s going to be important for us going forward to make sure we’re doing that a lot.”For me it’s satisfying [if we] get that ranking. I think that would be really good for us as a group. But when you’re number one, you want to stretch that distance between the teams. For us that’s making sure we play well away from home.”The first step on that road is to win in Christchurch, where James Pattinson has been confirmed as the replacement for Peter Siddle, who has back pain. Siddle’s absence, though, does raise the question of which bowler will do the hard work into the wind – a significant wind, if the past couple of days in Christchurch are any indication – as Pattinson and Hazlewood would both prefer to work down-breeze, and Jackson Bird struggled in the first innings in Wellington.”I think that’s understandable … given it was his first game back for a while and I think he was a little bit nervous,” Smith said of Bird. “I think he did get a little bit better as the game went on, I’m sure he’ll come out tomorrow with all guns blazing and I’m sure if gets the ball in the right areas he’ll get a lot of assistance from that wicket.”I think Josh can bowl the same way he’s been bowling, he’s been really impressive for quite a while now. He’s a class bowler and if he continues to bowl the way he is at the moment he’s going to take a lot of wickets.”Smith described the Hagley Oval pitch as “quite green and wet” and similar to the Basin Reserve surface, but he was wary of taking too much note of the pitch until the morning of the Test. Smith had success by winning the toss and sending New Zealand in at the Basin Reserve, but there is no guarantee he will go for the same option if given the opportunity in Christchurch.

The BCB has promised that the players’ contracts with the clubs in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League will be legally binding and that payments would be guaranteed. The country’s most prestigious domestic tournament is set to begin later this month with the “players by choice” draft taking place on Sunday.BCB’s senior vice-president Mahbubul Anam, who has also been appointed as the commissioner for the “players by choice” draft, said it will be the first time that such a system has been introduced to the Dhaka Premier League. The BCB felt that there was a need for a guarantee as there had been allegations that clubs had skimped on making full payments in the 2014 season, the last time the “players by choice” system was employed.”For the first time the Dhaka Premier League players will come under the BCB’s contract,” Anam said. “These will be signed by both the players and the clubs. We believe in professionalism, being an ICC Full Member. The mandatory contracts will be under the law of the land.””In addition, the clubs will have to give a post-dated cheque to the BCB to protect the players’ payment. BCB has a responsibility towards the players who will get 30% ahead of the tournament, 30% during the tournament the rest of the money, 40%, within four weeks after the tournament. We hope that we can maintain the financial discipline.”Bangladesh’s top 12 to 15 cricketers have been under an annual central contract for the past decade. Since 2013, the BCB has also brought first-class cricketers under its books. The Dhaka Premier League said its payment slabs won’t exceed Tk 30 lakh.

Além disso, os supostos documentos seriam da época em que o presidente era Carlos Miguel Aidar, que renunciou e foi substituído por Leco em 2015.

Kings XI Punjab went into the auction ahead of IPL 2016 with a purse of Rs 23 crore. On their priority list were fast bowlers and a legspinner. By the time they had finished shopping, they had added eight players to their roster – two fast bowlers, three spinners, two batting allrounders and an uncapped Indian batsman – and they still had Rs 12 crore left in the purse. With only 22 players, Kings XI have the joint-smallest squad in the IPL.Much like Rajasthan Royals, King XI have always been known to run a tight ship and are loath to splurge on big stars. That they have only seven overseas players in their squad tells the story. “I am guided by the same principles that you use in selecting a national squad – pick only about 15 or 16 players,” one of the franchise’s officials told ESPNcricinfo ahead of the auction. “In an ideal world – and I understand it’s a long tournament – I want the starting XI to play all the 14 matches. It makes sense to have four [foreign] players and have back-ups if anybody is injured.”Ahead of IPL 2014, Kings XI similarly preferred functionality to reputation while appointing their coaching staff, opting for the then recently-retired Sanjay Bangar, known only for his mentoring skills with the India A and Railways sides, over accomplished names. Under Bangar, the first Indian coach in the IPL, Kings XI made the final. The captain, George Bailey, was thoroughly impressed with Bangar and said, “Everything you see and like about Kings XI starts with Sanjay Bangar. His knowledge of the game is wonderful.”Two seasons on, Bangar has strived to ensure that the team doesn’t deviate from its primary ethos. “Our strategy has always been based around getting good domestic players, catching them young and providing them the platform. You have seen our platform has helped players like Axar Patel, Sandeep Shama, Gurkeerat Singh, Anureet Singh and Rishi Dhawan,” Bangar said. “Players have played here as unknown quantities, and have progressed and gone on to play the next level. That has been the vision of our franchise as well. In that parlance, if you see, we always went for Marcus Stoinis who is one of the emerging allrounders from the Australian cricket circuit.”Bangar admitted that their player-acquisition strategy was dictated by small budgets, and said he didn’t see the need to dismantle the unit despite having won only three games and finished last on the points table last year. “All our strategy is based around a particular budget that the directors give us. From that perspective we have to optimise the selection strategies taking into account the budgetary constraints,” he said.”The players have been included with an eye on the future. We believe in giving continuity. We believe in their strengths, we believe in their ability to bounce back and turn the corner for the team. That is why we opted for continuity in the core group of players that we have in our team.”Bangar also suggested that the team was built bottom up, with the captain, David Miller, being chosen from among the players rather than the other way around. This, however, was not entirely by design, but dictated more by the constraints Kings XI faced. “Number one, there were very few options outside which were available. Most of the captaincy candidates who we were looking for who were coming out from the two teams [Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings] – Ajinkya Rahane or Suresh Raina or Steven Smith – were absorbed by the two new teams.”Taking that into account we wanted to have a captain who has played for the team quite a bit. The association with Kings XI was quite important among the available players, and we needed somebody who is young and who is dynamic, and we chose David.”Bangar was pleased with newly appointed mentor Virender Sehwag’s “hands-on” role in devising strategy and sharing pointers with the team’s youngsters. “He interacts with the boys a lot and the boys are going to benefit immensely from his inputs,” Bangar said. “As far as Sehwag goes, it is a continuation of our association we had with him as opening batsmen. We have opened together for India, in the last two-three years we have been player-coach, now we are coach and mentor on the same side of the management.”He is making some good contributions to the team in relation to the strategy, also most of the things we did at the auction were in consultation with him. He is quite hands-on and is involved in a lot of activities.”The Kings XI experience, Bangar said, had helped immensely in his evolution as coach. He also served as India’s batting coach for a while until his contract came to an end after the World T20. “It has been an enormous experience for me, in terms of running or managing the team in a set up like the IPL, wherein players from various age-groups and various levels of achievement are playing together. How do we integrate them, how do we handle them, how do we create a conducive atmosphere, and then again work with them to ensure that the team achieves the goal it wants. It has been quite a learning experience and I have benefited immensely from it.”

Na história, não são muitos os jogadores que atingiram esse alto volume de gols em apenas uma edição. Principalmente no atual modelo. Com 20 clubes e pontos corridos, fórmula implantada em 2006, apenas Jonas, pelo Grêmio, em 2010, e Borges, pelo Santos, em 2011, com 23 gols cada, marcaram mais vezes. Expulso nesse fim de semana, Gabigol ainda terá quatro oportunidades – se atuar em todas, é claro – de bater este recorde.

Os primeiros passos para o Flamengo manter Gabigol já começaram. De acordo com o presidente do clube, Rodolfo Landim, o clube já está encaminhando um acordo com a Inter de Milão para que o herói do título da Copa Libertadores e artilheiro na conquista do Brasileirão prossiga na Gávea.

– Tivemos contatos iniciais com a Inter de Milão. Não temos nada fechado com eles, mas está bem encaminhado. Claro que passa pela vontade do jogador, temos que acertar as bases salariais. Os contatos são feitos pelo vice de futebol, Marcos Braz. As conversas serão definidas no fim do ano. O dirigente falou sobre o saneamento de dívidas do Rubro-Negro:

– Lidamos com a cobrança da torcida por resultados em curto prazo, mas sei o quanto foi difícil chegarmos até aqui. Só acredito que os não vinham sendo bem utilizados anteriormente. Desta vez, fomos mais arrojados no mercado, conseguimos contratações mais fortes e os resultados estão aí.

Em seguida, falou sobre a meta do clube para cada reforço que desembarca na Gávea.

-Minha preocupação não é só trazer os melhores, mas quem pode agregar.

Landim ainda falou sobre as famílias de vítimas da tragédia do Ninho do Urubu. Ele frisou que não há desamparo e destacou o acordo com três famílias “e meia” (o pai de uma vítima não aceitou a proposta, enquanto a mãe chegou a um acordo com a indenização).

-O Flamengo jamais desamparou as famílias do Ninho. Fizemos acordo já com três famílias e meia, os valores que o clube deu às família são bem maiores aos que indenizações são dadas em geral para o que está previsto neste tipo de tragédia na justiça.

Em sua chegada à Câmara, o mandatário ouviu de uma torcedora a cobrança: “Landim, paga as famílias do Ninho”.

O São Paulo liberou o volante Hudson da reapresentação do elenco, nesta quarta-feira, para que ele finalize sua negociação com o Fluminense. O jogador de 31 anos, cujo contrato com o São Paulo foi renovado em março do ano passado e vai até o fim de 2021, deve ir por empréstimo para as Laranjeiras.

Hudson estava sem espaço no meio de campo do São Paulo. Fernando Diniz até tinha a ideia de utilizá-lo como zagueiro, mas o próprio atleta não se animou com essa possibilidade – ele não abre mão de ser volante, tanto que no início da temporada, quando era titular da lateral direita, já havia pedido a Cuca para brigar por vaga em sua posição de origem.

Ainda não há confirmação sobre a divisão de salários – inicialmente, o Fluminense gostaria que o São Paulo arcasse com parte dos vencimentos de Hudson para conseguir fazer a contratação. Mas, de qualquer forma, a saída dele ajudará a diretoria tricolor a aliviar a folha salarial, uma meta do clube em 2020.

Contratado pelo São Paulo em 2014, Hudson soma 198 jogos e seis gols pelo clube. Na última, entrou em campo 34 vezes e fez dois gols. No Brasileirão, esteve em 16 dos 38 jogos do Tricolor e balançou a rede na estreia, contra o Botafogo.

Embora não tenha contratado reforços, o São Paulo tem algumas novidades no grupo deste ano: Shaylon e Brenner voltaram de empréstimo e serão observados, enquanto Danilo, Diego e Fabinho, todos vindos de Cotia, foram integrados à equipe principal e podem receber oportunidades. O goleiro Jean, os atacantes Raniel e Calazans e o volante Hudson já saíram. Walce e Antony, que estão no Pré-Olímpico com a Seleção Brasileira ao lado de Igor Gomes, despertam interesse de outras equipes e podem sair.

– Eu não sou um cara de reclamar de elenco. O que a gente tem é suficiente, temos jogadores para repor se eventualmente a diretoria tiver que vender para honrar os compromissos. A gente está preparado para isso. Todo time grande hoje no Brasil sabe que a venda de jogador faz parte. O mais importante foi a gente ter uma grande manutenção do elenco, para que o jeito de jogar fique mais sedimentado – avaliou Diniz, que falou em brigar por Paulista, Libertadores, Copa do Brasil e Brasileiro.

– Em todas as competições que disputar, o São Paulo vai tentar ao máximo conseguir os títulos, começando pelo Paulista. Aqui não tem como pensar minimamente diferente. Temos elenco forte, estrutura, camisa, tradição, então temos que pensar em todos os títulos.

Jogadores que não foram reintegrados

Everton Felipe, Jonatan Gómez, Tréllez, Léo Natel e Araruna, que voltaram recentemente de empréstimo, não estão fazendo a pré-temporada com o elenco do São Paulo. O clube procura novos clubes para eles, e Diniz explica que não deseja trabalhar com um elenco muito inchado – são 29 jogadores que estão em Cotia, além de Rojas, que está em tratamento no CT, e dos três do Pré-Olímpico.

– São bons jogadores. Tudo pode acontecer (sobre ainda serem utilizados), mas isso a gente vai ver em um segundo momento. Eu não gosto de trabalhar com elenco muito inchado. Existe uma tendência de a gente machucar poucos jogadores, dou muito treino tático e um elenco muito grande dificulta que a gente dê atenção para todo mundo.

– Não tem número exato. Não gosto de elenco muito grande. Se a gente tem que acomodar jogadores que são do São Paulo e têm qualidade, vamos acomodando. Prefiro elencos mais enxutos, mas ao mesmo tempo teremos muitos jogos e de repente vamos ter que ter um pouquinho mais.
