Cole Palmer is killing it for Chelsea since leaving Man City – but Pep Guardiola was still right to let him go

The attacker is one of the most productive forwards in the Premier League this season but did not have the patience to make it with City

Manchester City must have thought they were quids in when they sold Cole Palmer to Chelsea for £42.5 million ($53m) given they had barely used him in the first team. Palmer was the star export among a flurry of academy players to leave City last summer, banking the club £156m ($196m) within the last two years.

But as they have watched Palmer flourish in an otherwise malfunctioning Chelsea team, City might now be thinking they were short-changed when they let him leave. Palmer has racked up 12 goals and nine assists for his new club and came back to haunt his boyhood club when he starred in Chelsea's thrilling 4-4 draw with City in November.

The winger will be Chelsea's main threat again when City host the Blues on Saturday, knowing that Arsenal and Liverpool will be waiting to pounce on any mistake from Guardiola's side.

  • Getty

    Always on the fringes

Palmer left City with 41 senior appearances but the truth is he was always on the fringes of the side. He made just two Premier League starts last season, both after the title had been sewn up, and only one the year before, while he never played a minute of Champions League football.

His starts were mostly confined to the domestic cups and he routinely delivered, scoring his first senior goal in a Carabao Cup thrashing of Wycombe Wanders before making a stunning appearance in the 4-1 win at Swindon Town in the the FA Cup in January 2022.

It was then that Palmer exhibited his Mancunian swagger, saying of the getting his first goal in the oldest Cup competition in football: "Yeah delighted, Prem soon come." His confidence, bordering on arrogance and sounding a bit like Liam Gallagher, brought a smile to many City fans' faces.

But his cocky demeanour probably did not chime well with Guardiola, who wants to foster a culture of humility in his squad and insists that academy graduates have to truly earn their place in the first team. Palmer played no more games that season for the senior side even though he was frequently named as a substitute.

Super Cup glory then exit talks

He made further inroads into the team last season but again it was mostly in the lesser competitions and even then he started just one game in the FA Cup, only coming off the bench in the semi-final against Sheffield United when Guardiola had made wholesale changes to his line-up.

That must have been deeply frustrating for Palmer after first getting called into Guardiola's squad in July 2020. Almost three years on, he was enjoying just a smattering of appearances, watching his fellow squad members storm to the treble.

"Prem" did not soon come and when the new Premier League season started at Burnley, Palmer was again on the bench, despite starring and scoring in the Community Shield against Arsenal.

Palmer was again decisive in the UEFA Super Cup, grabbing the equaliser to send the match with Sevilla to penalties, where his side prevailed. But after the game it was becoming clear that Palmer would not be staying at City for long.

"The opinion I had is he wanted to leave, but now I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Guardiola said in Athens, just moments after hoisting another trophy. "He’s going to stay or leave, but I think a loan is not going to happen. I understand he wants to be more active than the previous season. But Riyad [Mahrez] has gone, so we have one more place there."

Even on the night in which Palmer had stepped up and proved his worth, Guardiola seemed to be questioning his true commitment to the club.

  • Getty

    At odds with Guardiola

Palmer, though, had reasons to also doubt whether or not he would get a consistent run in the team. Riyad Mahrez had left, but two days before the Super Cup reports emerged that City were in talks to sign Jeremy Doku, putting another obstacle between Palmer and regular first team football.

Palmer had also just helped lead England's under-21 side to the European Championship. He backed himself to succeed in the Premier League but could not guarantee he would do so at City. Who can blame him for not entertaining the prospect of yet another season on the bench?

Guardiola again seemed to question Palmer's commitment to City ahead of their last match in November. He said: "Cole arrived and accepted some processes and then after one or two years said: ‘No, I don’t want to play here, I am not going to play.’ But I said: ‘Riyad [Mahrez] is leaving, you are going to get a chance here,’ and he said: ‘No, I am not going to play here, I want to leave,’ so I said: ‘OK, leave.' He got what he wanted. It is good for him."

Palmer saw it differently and has since claimed he was in favour of a loan move instead. He preferred to return to City with a year of regular football under his belt and be better equipped to fight for his place in Guardiola's star-studded team.

"My thing was to never leave City. That was not my intention. I wanted to go on loan for a year, come back and be ready for the first team. But they said I couldn't go on loan, either stay or you get sold," Palmer told in January. "So then, Chelsea rang me. I said I wanted to go to Chelsea and I'm really happy to be here. I'm very glad I made the decision to come here."

    'Cold Palmer'

Palmer has been a revelation at Chelsea and within his second month at the club had made more league starts than he had in three years with City. He also got that goal he craved in the Premier League, breaking his duck with a penalty at Burnley. He has since scored nine more, earning the nickname 'Cold Palmer' from his team-mate Noni Madueke. His goals have put him among the top 10 scorers in the league this season. If you add his six assists, he is among the top six players for goal contributions.

His goal tally dwarfs every City player aside from Erling Haaland while only Phil Foden has set up more goals. The Chelsea winger has admitted he has exceeded his own expectations, even if they were pretty high in the first place. "I cant deny that. I wanted to get into the team, play and show what I can do. But to get in the team straight away and hit the ground running has surprised me to be fair," he added in his interview.

Guardiola has not been surprised either, insisting he knew that Palmer would thrive once given regular football. "I didn't have any doubts about his quality," the City coach told a press conference before Palmer's return to the Etihad Stadium. "The way he's playing is a star player. He wanted the minutes, it was a question of time to show his immense quality. Cole Palmer is an exceptional player and a lovely lad and of course I wish him well at Chelsea."

Daniel Levy wants Hansi Flick at Tottenham

According to The Telegraph, Daniel Levy remains interested in hiring Hansi Flick as the new Tottenham manager.

The Lowdown: Flick to leave Bayern

Despite having an 81% win percentage at Bayern (Transfermarkt), Flick will leave the club at the end of the season (dw.com) due to his tense relationship with sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic (france24.com).

He has been heavily linked with the vacant Germany job (si.com) but, as of yet, there has been no confirmation as to whether or not he will take over the role from Joachim Low.

The Latest: Levy eyes Flick

As such, Levy is said to be interested in convincing Flick to make the switch to north London, according to The Telegraph.

Reports have previously suggested that the 56-year-old would be interested in the position.

The Verdict: Few better

Flick has only been manager of the Bavarians for around 18 months, but he has achieved fantastic success during that period. Bayern have won seven trophies under his tutelage, including two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League trophy, while they have been on the losing side on just eight occasions in his 85 matches in charge.

He currently earns €312,300 (£269,000) per week at Bayern, which is a hefty sum. However, given his track record, he would surely be welcome at Tottenham even on a wage close to that. It now remains to be seen whether Levy is able to get his man.

In other news, this man’s Tottenham departure is reportedly “almost done”.

Ings was awful in Saints defeat vs West Ham

Southampton’s season ended with a disappointing 3-0 defeat against West Ham on Sunday afternoon, in a game which summarised many of the faults of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side in what has been an ultimately underwhelming campaign from the Saints.

The game followed an all too familiar pattern for Southampton as after starting the game well and missing some excellent chances, West Ham capitalised on some poor defending to open the scoring through Pablo Fornals, who quickly added a second to put the Hammers in control.

Hasenhuttl’s side had plenty of opportunities to get back into the game before some more woeful defending late on allowed Declan Rice to waltz into the penalty area before slotting past Alex McCarthy to secure a comfortable win for David Moyes’ side, which confirmed their place in the Europa League next season.

One man who disappointed in the defeat at the London Stadium was Danny Ings.

As per SofaScore, the England international would earn a poor 6.5/10 rating for his performance, with only Kyle Walker-Peters (6.4), Alex McCarthy (6.4) and Takumi Minamino (6.4) rated lower.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

During his 84 minutes on the pitch, the 28-year-old striker would have just 22 touches of the ball, which was the fewest of any Southampton player to start the game, which is not what you would expect from the talismanic striker.

Ings would also complete just 10/14 of his passes during the game, which again was the fewest of any Southampton player including goalkeeper McCarthy, who would complete 13.

The “hugely impressive” striker was simply not involved, as he would lose his only duel of the game, whilst he also failed to contribute a single shot on target, dribble or key pass during his time on the pitch.

The service to Ings wasn’t great, but when the ball did get to him, he was pretty poor at keeping hold of it.

Despite being involved so little, he still contrived to lose possession on nine occasions, and it was no surprise to see him substituted with around 10 minutes to go, as Hasenhuttl was clearly not impressed with the way his star striker failed to turn up for the final game of the season.

PSG player ratings vs Newcastle: Kylian Mbappe goes missing while Marquinhos mistake sums up sorry Champions League showing

The Frenchman didn't register a single shot on target as the Parisians crumbled at St. James' Park

Kylian Mbappe was a peripheral figure, and the rest of his Paris Saint-Germain team-mates did little to contribute, as the Parisians lost 4-1 to a rampant Newcastle side in their second Champions League group-stage fixture. The Frenchman never got on the ball in the right areas, while a trio of defensive breakdowns handed the Magpies easy goals as the other end, as PSG's mixed start to life under new manager Luis Enrique continued.

Newcastle applied pressure early, and were good value for their opener. Marquinhos gave the ball away in his defensive third, and Eddie Howe's side pounced. Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Alexander Isak's initial effort, but Miguel Almiron latched onto the rebound and found the bottom corner.

They made it two shortly before half-time, with Dan Burn rising above Milan Skriniar to nod home at the far post after a hectic scramble in the box. Their third came after the break, provided by academy graduate Sean Longstaff. The midfielder scampered into the right channel untracked, and fired low to Donnarumma's right — the Italian failing to keep it out despite getting a hand on it.

PSG stayed alive, and it started with Warren Zaire-Emery, who dinked a delightful ball over the Newcastle defence, which Lucas Hernandez headed into the corner. They created further opportunities, Ousmane Dembele twice missing after bursting into the box, but they could never get their main man Mbappe involved, and looked short of ideas until a belter from Fabian Schar put the game well beyond reach.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Made an excellent stop to deny Isak, but could do nothing about Almiron's follow up. Can't be faulted for the second, either. Will feel he could have done better on the third after making contact. Finished with five saves.

    Achraf Hakimi (5/10):

Managed the pace of Gordon reasonably well. Didn't offer too much going the other way.

    Marquinhos (4/10):

Gave the ball away foolishly to gift Newcastle the opener. Never really got better from then on.

    Milan Skriniar (5/10):

Burn simply jumped over him for the Magpies' second. Looks uncomfortable against pace.

    Lucas Hernandez (5/10):

Almiron had a field day on his side of the pitch. Took his goal well, though.

    Midfield

    Manuel Ugarte (4/10):

Overrun in the middle of the park. Late into a few challenges, and never really had time to settle on the ball. Must have been relieved when substituted.

    Warren Zaire-Emery (5/10):

Should have tracked Longstaff on Newcastle's third. Made up for it with a lovely assist to Hernandez. A young player who has a lot to learn.

    Attack

    Ousmane Dembele (4/10):

Put a volley wide in the opening minutes. Had a few other decent chances, but couldn't find the net. His lack of quality in front of goal is concerning at times.

    Goncalo Ramos (5/10):

Ran a lot, and got into some of the right areas on the break. Never really had the chance to make things happen.

    Kylian Mbappe (5/10):

Barely touched the ball over the course of 90 minutes. He's not often nullified like this.

    Randal Kolo Muani (3/10):

Rattled by the occasion early. Gave the ball away numerous times in the first half. Didn't last an hour.

    Subs & Manager

    Bradley Barcola (4/10):

Brought on for an injection of pace and creativity — which he failed to offer.

    Vitinha (6/10):

A bit more expansive from central midfield. Was probably introduced too late.

    Luis Enrique (3/10):

Got his tactics remarkably wrong given the scenario. PSG should never have started with four attackers in such a high-energy encounter. Qualification won't be easy now.

Man City player ratings vs Arsenal: Where was Erling Haaland?! Superstar striker fails to show up as Premier League champions lose again

The Norwegian went missing for the second Premier League game in a row, but few players distinguished themselves in a disappointing defeat

All good things must come to an end, and Manchester City's incredible run of 12 straight Premier League victories over Arsenal was finally halted thanks to a heavily-deflected Gabriel Martinelli goal.

Pep Guardiola's side played without their usual swagger and confidence, and there was an air of shyness about them without Rodri. Indeed, they have lost all three matches that the influential Spaniard has been suspended for.

But most worrying for the treble winners is the form of Erling Haaland. The Norwegian gave Arsenal almost nothing to worry about and uncharacteristically ducked out of a header which he usually would have powered straight into the net. He has now failed to score in his last three matches.

The international break comes at a good time for him and will give him time to reset for City's next matches, against Brighton and Manchester United.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ederson (6/10):

Barely had to make a save until being beaten by a wild deflection.

    Kyle Walker (6/10):

Guarded the right side of the pitch astutely. Didn't get forward much.

    Ruben Dias (7/10):

Very assured, barely allowed Nketiah a sniff at goal.

    Nathan Ake (6/10):

Solid for most of the game and unlucky with the goal, with Martinelli's shot just bouncing off him and into the net. Caused some danger going forward but loses a mark for not hitting the target with a good chance in the first half.

    Josko Gvardiol (7/10):

His best game in a City shirt. Alert to the danger, physically imposing and a threat going forward. Had a shot cleared off the line by Rice.

  • Getty Images

    Midfield

    Rico Lewis (7/10):

Fully justified his selection for such a big game and played with maturity and bravery.

    Bernardo Silva (6/10):

Sat very deep and acted more as a destroyer than a creator, albeit a very graceful one.

    Mateo Kovacic (5/10):

Kept the ball well but loses marks for two rash and dangerous tackles which could have got him sent off.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Julian Alvarez (6/10):

Played with determination and almost caught Raya out when he closed him down while dribbling. Couldn't create much more danger for the rest of the game.

    Erling Haaland (4/10):

Another really poor performance. Ducked out of a good heading opportunity in the first half and barely seen in the second.

    Phil Foden (5/10):

    Couldn't influence the game much.

    Subs & Manager

    John Stones (6/10):

Made his first Premier League appearance of the season but couldn't have much impact.

    Jeremy Doku (7/10):

Looked a threat and worked hard defensively.

    Matheus Nunes (6/10):

Could have shown more aggression and didn't look like turning the game around after Arsenal went ahead.

    Pep Guardiola (6/10):

Surprisingly kept Kovacic on after half-time despite the risk. It made no difference in the end and his subs made sense even if they did not pay off.

Possible Celtic target Shaqiri assessed

Premier League Golden Boot winner Kevin Phillips backed Xherdan Shaqiri to ‘shine’ if he joined Celtic.

Football Insider reported at the end of April that Shaqiri is looking for a new club.

And they asked Phillips this week whether Celtic should pursue the wantaway Switzerland international.

“Shaqiri has got a lot of quality and I think he would shine up in that league,” he told FI.

“That would be a great signing for Celtic so long as they did not have to break the bank to get him in.”

Shaqiri is valued at £12.6million by Transfermarkt, a touch under Liverpool’s £13million outlay in 2018.

The 29-year-old has just over two years left on his contract however, so perhaps there could be some wiggle room on that value seeing as he has started just five league matches this season, via Whoscored.

‘Shaqiri sometimes goes missing’

Phillips says one worry for Celtic would be the consistency of Shaqiri’s performances.

“He is a good player but I’d be concerned that sometimes he goes missing,” he said.

“You need perform week in, week out because it is paramount that they win the league next season.”

Shaqiri has played a total of 788 minutes for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, scoring one goal and providing four assists.

Klopp has predominantly deployed him as an attacking midfielder but he’s also been used on the right-hand side.

After Shaqiri teed-up Diogo Jota’s winning goal against West Ham at the end of October, Graeme Souness labelled him a ‘door opener’ who ‘sees a pass and can deliver on it’.

Transfer Tavern verdict

It seems a little harsh to question Shaqiri’s consistency levels given that he’s rarely given a sustained run in the side, such is the quality in Liverpool’s squad even despite their faltering campaign.

Were he to head to North, he would be the most successful player in the entire league – let’s not forget this is a man with English, German and Swiss league titles to his name as well as two Champions League, two Super Cup and two Club World Cup medals, via Transfermarkt.

The unfortunate truth is that he might be aiming a little higher than the SPL, but if Celtic could convince the playmaker to reignite his career north of the border, it would be one hell of a coup.

In other news, could this player head the other way?
