Heather Knight has point to prove as Women's Ashes reaches grandest stage

Hopes of a record attendance at MCG have been dented by one-sided nature of series

Valkerie Baynes29-Jan-2025When Cricket Australia positioned the MCG Test at end of the series for the first time in the multi-format Women’s Ashes, making history was at the forefront. Now, however, the first pink-ball Test at the celebrated venue and the first Women’s Test there in 76 years also carries the prospect of the home side sealing an unprecedented 16-points-to-nil whitewash. It is an unexpected state of play after an eight-all draw in England 18 months ago and every Australia victory of this year’s edition added volume to the big question hanging over the Test: will it draw a big enough crowd to stop the 100,000-seat stadium looking desolate? With the trophy long since decided, how many will venture out for a late night at the end of the first week of a new school year to watch England play for pride, or Australia grind their opposition into the dust, remains to be seen.Home spectators eager to witness the latter over the weekend are probably the best bet for a bumper crowd. And the concept of bumper must be tempered in light of the record 86,000-plus which last saw Australia Women play at the venue, in the 2020 T20 World Cup final.Related

Heather Knight, the England captain whose position has come under pressure (along with head coach Jon Lewis) amid a winless campaign thus far, supported the ambition shown by staging the match at the MCG given a shortage of mid-sized venues seating around 20,000 which are more common at home.”The chance to play a Test match at the MCG is just iconic,” Knight said on match eve. “We’d much rather do that and then have the ambition in the future to continue to grow the crowds and bring people in.”Everyone’s really disappointed with how we’ve performed so far. We feel like we haven’t played our best cricket at all as a side. We haven’t shown what we’re about and the next four days is a chance to do that, for us to show exactly who we are as cricketers and who we are as people.”The Test has been important in determining the path of the series several times since the Women’s Ashes became a multi-format affair in 2013.A record women’s crowd witnessed Australia’s victory in the T20 World Cup in 2020•Getty ImagesFor Australia, a 161-run triumph at Canterbury in 2015 put them 8-2 up and on the cusp of regaining the Ashes, which they did by winning one of the subsequent three T20Is. Their 89-run victory at Trent Bridge in 2023 ultimately allowed them to retain the Ashes despite going on to lose both white-ball series. For England, their 61-run victory in Perth in 2013-14 set them on course for the series, which was sealed in the first T20I in Hobart. That was the last time England won the series on Australian soil. Meanwhile, the tense draw of 2021-22 had no bearing on the series, with Australia having already retained the trophy, but it was huge for the game as England, chasing 257 to win, posted the highest fourth-innings score in women’s Test history and Australia took nine wickets in a session. With all four results possible in the final over, tailenders Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone held out.Knight scored 168 not out and 48 in that Test in Canberra and her desire to make another significant contribution in this match has been heightened by the criticism of her team.”The way we’ve performed and the results in this series, I think you come to expect that extra scrutiny and pressure,” Knight said. “There’s no doubt that there has been a lot of noise.”Individuals will probably deal with it differently. Some will probably try to ignore it and do everything they can to try and turn things around. Some will use it as motivation. The way the results have gone, there’s bound to be some criticism and that’s completely fair. It’s our jobs to try and turn things around and try and have some success this week.”I’m probably someone that is at my best when I’ve got a bit of a point to prove and I certainly do have it this week, so hopefully I can put in a really good performance for the side over the next four days.”Australia won the 2023 Ashes Test before England battled back in the series•Getty ImagesAfter Australia thrashed England by 72 runs in the final T20I in Adelaide last weekend, Beth Mooney – the standout performer with 303 runs across both white-ball legs of the series, including an unbeaten 94 in that match – acknowledged that the tension was gone from the series.”It certainly would have been nice if we played the Test match while the series was still on the line, maybe earlier in the series, but that wasn’t to be,” she said. “On an individual front and as a group it’s come at a great time for us to basically just show off our skills and really enjoy playing the four-day game.”So, will the MCG see two free-wheeling sides putting on a show at one of the sport’s most revered venues with nothing on the line in terms of results? Or will it be an Australian side which prides itself on being ruthless seeking to assert their dominance even further on an embattled side with plenty at stake?Throw in the inevitable chatter around the position of Tests in the women’s game – this one will be played with just three full training days available in the lead-up – and it makes for an intriguing end to the tour, whatever happens.

Switch Hit: Ashes x Bazball

It’s (almost) time to burn, as Andrew McGlashan and Matt Roller join Alan Gardner ahead of the first Test at Edgbaston

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jun-2023With Australia crowned World Test Champions, the stage is now clear for the Ashes and England’s attempts to regain the urn. The teams have assembled in Birmingham ahead of the first Test, with Moeen Ali is back in the Test fold for the first time since 2021. For our Switch Hit preview Alan Gardner was joined in the studio by Matt Roller with Andrew McGlashan dialing in from the second city, to discuss Australia’s pace-bowling poser, the return of Moeen and whether Bazball can succeed against such a formidable touring line-up.

Chance for Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal to recreate the old magic

The two are back where it started for them in ODIs, but neither man goes into the series a certain starter

Karthik Krishnaswamy14-Jul-2021The last time India toured Sri Lanka for a bilateral ODI series, they put in place what became a key component of their 50-overs strategy for the best part of the next two years. It was in Colombo, in the fifth ODI of a series that India won 5-0, that Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal first bowled together. They came together because India had struggled for middle-overs wickets during the 2017 Champions Trophy, and the wristspin partnership went a long way towards solving that issue: between that tournament and the 2019 World Cup, only Afghanistan among Full-Member teams had a better collective bowling average in the second powerplay (overs 11-40) than India’s 32.98.In that period between ICC events, Yadav (87 wickets at 21.74) and Chahal (66 at 25.68) were the top two wicket-takers in all ODI cricket. They featured in tandem in each of India’s first six matches at the 2019 World Cup, but that sixth game revealed the cracks in the strategy. The pitch at Edgbaston was flat, and one of the square boundaries was significantly shorter than the other. In those conditions, England’s marauding top order took full toll of Yadav and Chahal, who took just the one wicket between them while going for 160 in their 20 overs. India’s chase of 338 never really got going, with their lack of lower-order batting seemingly forcing the top order to minimise risk and play for net run-rate.Related

  • Kuldeep and Chahal demoted in BCCI contracts list

That was the last time India picked both Yadav and Chahal in an ODI XI. Since then, they have left one on the bench and partnered the other with a spin-bowling allrounder, usually Ravindra Jadeja. In this new world order, both the wristspinners have struggled to match their earlier impact. Since the World Cup, Yadav averages 58.41 in 12 ODIs, and Chahal 37.12 in five. Both have economy rates north of six an over. Both have suffered demotions in India’s contracts hierarchy. It is at this juncture in their careers that Yadav and Chahal return to the R Premadasa Stadium, the venue where their partnership took root. They return as senior members of a side missing a number of regulars, but neither begins this three-match ODI series as a certain starter. When India last played an ODI, against England in Pune, neither was part of their attack. Chahal was benched for the entire series, and Yadav, who had been hit for eight sixes in the second ODI, was dropped for the decider, with India picking just the one spinner – allrounder Krunal Pandya – and four frontline quicks. On this Sri Lanka tour, Yadav and Chahal will compete for spin-bowling spots with legspinner Rahul Chahar, offspinner K Gowtham, left-arm spinner Pandya and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who, it would seem, might only be in contention for the T20Is that follow the ODI series. Of those four, Pandya and Gowtham are allrounders to varying degrees.Whichever combination they pick in Colombo, India would hope they arrest a worrying overall slide in their middle-overs displays. Since the World Cup, the team’s collective bowling average in this phase is an unflattering 43.75…ESPNcricinfo Ltd… and their economy rate a worrying 6.05. While the sample sizes are small, given the lack of cricket that’s been played since the onset of Covid-19, no other team has done as poorly on this front.ESPNcricinfo LtdThere are mitigating factors, of course. India’s schedule has pitted them against some of the world’s best hitting sides since the World Cup, with all their ODIs in this period coming against Australia (six matches), England (three), New Zealand (three) and West Indies (six). India’s first-choice bowlers have often been unavailable or returning from injury. Most significantly, India’s new-ball bowlers have struggled, averaging an eye-watering 150.42 in the first ten overs of ODIs. This has had an obvious knock-on effect on the middle-overs bowlers, who have often had to begin their spells against set batters on extremely flat pitches. In the last ODI Yadav featured in, for instance, Ben Stokes was able to slog-sweep him with abandon even when he was hitting against the turn and dragging the ball from well outside off stump.Given all that, this series against a Sri Lanka side that’s beset by on- and off-field strife, on pitches that should offer some help to the spinners, couldn’t have come at a better time for Yadav and Chahal. But with all the other contenders breathing down their necks, they might need to serve up a reminder of all their old magic.

Don't sack Xabi Alonso! Real Madrid boss must be given time & it would be crazy if Man City Champions League loss leads to his sudden departure

Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso is under increasing pressure after a tough start to life back in the Spanish capital, with reports going so far as to claim the Los Blancos boss could be sacked if his side lose to Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday night. But is dismissing the former Madrid midfielder the right decision?

Alonso at risk of early dismissal

According to reports, the hierarchy at Madrid have held a meeting over the future of their head coach and offered no guarantees that Alonso will remain in the job if the club's form does not improve. The Spanish giants have forfeited their lead at the top of La Liga, and now sit four points behind champions Barcelona. That is despite beating the Blaugrana 2-1 in the first El Clasico of the season back in October. With the pressure now ramped up, Alonso faces arguably his toughest test yet – Pep Guardiola.

The City boss is certainly not going to take it easy on his fellow countryman, and he refused to be drawn into speculation about his future. Guardiola said: "I wish Xabi all the best, but his future is an answer I don't know. You all know the situation better than I do; I'm far removed from it. I haven't spoken with Florentino, and he hasn't told me that tomorrow will be Xabi's last match. If you don't win big games, things get difficult. But Xabi is in control of the situation and knows what this whole thing is about. My concern is seeing what we've done well. To beat Real Madrid in this competition, it's not enough to be better; you have to be much better."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMadrid must ease expectations

Alonso has a proven track record. He led Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title and their biggest success since claiming the 1993 German Cup. The 44-year-old then had the whole of Europe at his doorstep, begging him to join, but he chose Madrid, the club he represented 158 times during his career. There is no doubt that he is a world-class coach, and it would benefit Los Blancos to loosen the weight of expectation during his first term as manager. Understandably, it is not always that simple in Madrid, and failure is very rarely rewarded; however, despite their run of just one win in their last five games in La Liga, four points is not an insurmountable deficit to overturn in the second half of the season, and the club are better off putting their trust in Alonso, rather than ripping his project up and starting again.

Alonso's toughest task: Managing a team of superstars

One of Alonso's biggest threats is managing the ego-driven squad Madrid currently possesses. Sometimes, too many big personalities can cause more harm than good, and given time, the Spaniard can drive out the unwanted crop and replace them with players he knows will thrive in his system. Fans have already seen him clash with Vinicius Junior, but Alonso must also contend with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo, Jude Bellingham and Endrick. Three of the five mentioned have been linked with moves away from Madrid; perhaps that is the action needed to give the manager a stronger grip over his team.

Getty ImagesPatience will be rewarded

Arsenal are the ultimate example of a club who are being rewarded for their patience and trust in the process. Madrid are not exactly battling relegation, although you could argue that with the quality of their team, challenging on all fronts is the bare minimum. After a few short months, it is incredibly hard to gauge an idea of how well things are going under new leadership, especially when that person is taking over from Carlo Ancelotti, a man who was given four years to deliver, and did not always manage it. If Madrid fans can take anything away from the opening months of the 2025-26 campaign, let it be the big wins rather than the losses. Victories over Barcelona and Juventus are clear indicators of what the team can be; it might just require a bit of patience in the short-term.

117 touches, 96% passing: Celtic star just had his best game all season

Celtic have closed the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership table on a potentially pivotal Sunday.

The Hoops demolished Kilmarnock 4-0 at Parkhead, with Johnny Kenny breaking the deadlock, Kieran Tierney adding a second shortly after half time, before Daizen Maeda and then Arne Engels from the penalty spot added a little gloss to the scoreline late on.

With Hearts held to a 1-1 draw by Dundee United over at Tynecastle, the Hoops go into the international break now just seven points adrift of the leaders, also with a game in hand.

For Martin O’Neill, since returning to the Parkhead dugout after two decades away, he has enjoyed back-to-back 4-0 Premiership wins, as well as dumping Rangers out of the League Cup semi-finals at Hampden; the less said about Thursday’s Europa League clash with Midtjylland the better!

In this victory, for however long the 73-year-old remains in caretaker charge, he learned that one Celtic player in particular can be counted on.

Will O'Neill still be at Celtic after the break?

After Sunday’s comfortable victory, O’Neill confirmed “I genuinely don’t know” if he will still be in charge for their next fixture, adding that if the board do appoint a permanent manager during the international break that it’ll “be absolutely fine by me”.

When Celtic do return to action later this month, they’ll travel to St Mirren before facing Feyenoord in Rotterdam in a repeat of the 1970 European Cup Final, but who will be in charge of those matches?

Well, could it be Wilfried Nancy?

He is currently the favourite to land the job, reportedly one of the club’s top targets alongside Kieran McKenna, and a move to Glasgow may have edged a little bit closer this weekend, after Nancy’s Columbus Crew were dumped out the MLS play-offs by rivals FC Cincinnati on Saturday, meaning their season is now over, which could expedite any appointment, if he is indeed who they want.

Irrespective of who is sat in the away dugout in Paisley in a fortnight, they surely can’t help but be impressed by the performance of one Celtic player in particular this weekend.

Celtic star enjoys his finest day of the season vs Kilmarnock

The Celtic medical staff may need to paraphrase Police Chief Brody from Jaws: we’re going to need a bigger treatment room!

The Hoops are already without Cameron Carter-Vickers, Alistair Johnston, Jota and Kelechi Ịheanachọ, before Hampden hero Callum Osmand suffered a long-term injury in Herning on Thursday, while Marcelo Saracchi was then stretchered off in the first half against Kilmarnock.

This obviously is not ideal, but does of course present opportunities for others and, in the absence of Carter-Vickers, his compatriot Auston Trusty has really impressed.

The American centre-back put in an excellent display against Rangers in last weekend’s semi-final victory, but was possibly even more eye-catching this Sunday, with the statistics supporting this assertion.

As the table documents, the centre-half put in a colossal defensive display on Sunday, ranked first for duels as well as accurate passes and touches.

Meantime, when only Celtic players are considered, nobody accumulated more defensive actions, clearances or interceptions.

Glasgow World documented that he ‘continued his rich vein of form’, while noting that the 27-year-old appears to be the perfect man to fill a rather large Carter-Vickers-shaped void at the back.

The defender, who was named man of the match, was also labelled “composed, dominant and aggressive”, having been “immense” since Carter-Vickers suffered a long-term achilles injury against Sturm Graz.

As recognition of his form, Trusty has been recalled to the United States squad for their friendlies against Paraguay in Pennsylvania and then Uruguay in Florida next week.

Trusty has not played a single minute for the USMNT since November last year, but could well change that as Mauricio Pochettino continues to experiment ahead of the World Cup.

Back at club level, Celtic will need Trusty to remain fit, available and in form because, frankly, they don’t have any other options and, if a new manager is appointed in the next fortnight, he has really staked a claim to remain a key figure. This was undoubtedly his finest day of the campaign to date.

Big-money Chelsea flop is fast becoming their new Danny Drinkwater

It’s still early in the season, but even so, Chelsea’s summer business is starting to look questionable.

For example, Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho do not look at the level required, and Joao Pedro has one goal in his last seven Premier League games.

Moreover, even though Jorrel Hato is one of the most promising young defenders around, he looked out of his depth in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Fortunately, there is plenty of time for the players to come good, although there is another member of Enzo Maresca’s squad who is starting to look like one of Chelsea’s worst ever signings: Danny Drinkwater.

Drinkwater's Chelsea career

Drinkwater first shot to prominence when he played a pivotal role in Leicester City’s legendary Premier League triumph in the 15/16 season.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Englishman actually stayed at the King Power Stadium for the following campaign, but then, in the summer of 2017, made a £35m move to Chelsea.

While he was a title-winning midfielder, it felt like something of an unnecessary move from the Blues at the time, but nobody would have predicted quite how poorly it was going to go.

He would only make 22 appearances, totalling 1151 minutes, in his first season, on top of dealing with his role as a squad player, he had to contend with persistent calf injuries.

Unfortunately, the following season was even worse, as in addition to yet more injuries, it also became clear that Marizio Sarri did not fancy him at all, and so he ended the season with a solitary 30-minute appearance in the Community Shield.

The following campaign saw him join Burnley on loan for the first half of the season and Aston Villa for the second half.

However, injuries limited him to two appearances for the former, while a training ground incident saw him return to West London after just four appearances for the latter.

The writing was on the wall at this point, and after a loan to Turkish side Kasimpasa for half a season in 2020/21, he made one more move to Reading the following year, where he made 34 appearances and then retired.

It would be hard to describe Drinkwater’s move to Chelsea as anything other than a disaster, and while there were some reasons why, it mostly came down to his inability to remain fit.

Unfortunately for Maresca, it appears that he may now have someone like that in his squad today.

Chelsea's modern Drinkwater

While several players in Chelsea’s team have a less-than-ideal injury record, it’ll come as no shock that Roméo Lavia is the star in danger of becoming Maresca’s own Drinkwater.

Now, before the pitchforks and torches come out, the Belgian has already shown far more in West London than the former Blues man ever did, but that’s not really the point.

Like the former Leicester star, the 21-year-old has been so incredibly unlucky with injuries, and it’s now got to the point where some fans are questioning whether he should still be at the club come next season.

That might sound extreme, but considering he cost in excess of £45m in 2023, it’s really not.

For example, in his first campaign with the club, the midfielder, whom talent scout Jack Kulig once described as having “enormous potential,” played a single game.

Then, despite managing 22 appearances last season, they only amounted to 1,069 minutes of action.

This season, he has made seven appearances, totalling 240 minutes, but is now set to be out for some time after suffering yet another injury against Qarabag FK on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, availability is the best ability, and as one content creator put it, “there is a world-class player in there when he’s fit, but that is the case so rarely.”

Ultimately, Lavia is a better player than Drinkwater was, but due to his inability to remain fit, his Chelsea career could follow the same path.

Wyatt-Hodge 65 tops Knott 74* as Surrey win on last ball

Paige Scholfield and Alice Davidson-Richards scramble 11 off final over to snatch points

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay17-Jun-2025Danni Wyatt-Hodge continued her Utilita Bowl love affair as her 65 helped table-toppers Surrey vanquish Hampshire Hawks in a last-ball Women’s Vitality Blast thriller.Until her move to Surrey this winter, England star Wyatt-Hodge had made Utilita Bowl her home since 2017 – with both Southern Vipers in the Kia Super League and regional setup, and Southern Brave in the Hundred. She led a chase of 156 after Charli Knott had carefully amassed her T20 best of 74 to get Hawks to bang-on par at 155 for 4. Surrey eventually required 11 off the last over, which Paige Schofield and Alice Davidson-Richards managed with a two off the final delivery.Surrey captain Bryony Smith might have lost the toss but the placement of her fielders were exemplarity as Knott and Maia Bouchier struggled to pierce the ring. Only 32 runs came in the powerplay, with Knott particularly bogged down, as the fielding was backed by consistently tight bowling. It wasn’t rewarded with a wicket until the ninth over, when Bouchier skewed Alice Capsey to short third to end a 57-run opening stand.Bouchier’s demise began the start of more steady runs off Knott’s bat, helped by Freya Kemp pushing twos in her short stay – Kemp was caught at long-on before Georgia Adams swung to mid-off, both off the economical Dani Gregory.Rhianna Southby also fell, well caught at long-on by Davidson-Richards, but while wickets came quickly, runs came even faster.Knott had found her groove with the cover region a favoured area to power classily along the floor and to the ropes. The Australian had scored her T20 best in the victory over Essex last Thursday, but she went past the 72 she scored at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, Chelmsford. Her fifty came in 46 balls and she ended up with a 61-ball 74 as Hawks accelerated to score 56 runs in the last five overs – with Abi Norgrove sensational in her 24 off 10 balls.Surrey’s chase of 156 started with a stutter as Bryony Smith was out-Smithed by Linsey Smith – the left-arm spinner striking with her first ball after returning from England duty. Capsey looped international team-mate Lauren Bell to midwicket and Kira Chathli was unbelievably caught at point as the visitors slumped to 35 for 3.Wyatt-Hodge is very familiar with Utilita Bowl from years spent here before her winter move to Surrey. It made her the perfect person to get the chase in order as she got things motoring with a six down the ground off Smith. Her eighth T20 half-century on the ground came in 30 balls but Mary Taylor’s second over brought two wickets and made Hawks favourites. Grace Harris, who had put on 66 with Wyatt-Hodge, picked out long-on and then Wyatt-Hodge sliced to backward point.Paige Scholfield and Davidson-Richards kept the chase in order to make in 18 needed off the last two overs, and 11 off the last over. Adams held the first three balls to four runs but Davidson-Richards flashed a boundary through the covers before Scholfield hit two off the last ball to secure a nervy win.
